My almost 8 year old daughter seen an allergist the other week for her headaches she been off and on having. Her pediatrician have her on levocetirizine (Xyzal) allergy medicine. The allergist put her on Bromfed DM Syp. She said it was safe for both to be taken. Pharmacy said he would pick one or the other that he wouldn't give her both because both contain antihistamines. Her pediatrician said it's ok to take because it works differently. I have 2 telling me its ok, and a few telling me they wouldn't. I don't want to over do her on the medicines. Thoughts???
Edit:// ok I looked both medicines up together and it said both may increase such as dizziness, drowsiness and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment.
Edit-6/2/15-- they ordered blood work and testing her food allergies in july since headaches are usually caused from food allergies. They say they might test her for pets since we have pets(dogs and pet rabbit) then maybe mold, pollen etc. I think the allergist doesn't want to over step the doctor on what allergy medicine she put her on likr the doctor doesn't the allergist. Like I said as above I been giving her the allergy medicine the allergist prescribed only. The allergist said she likes to cut them down on that medicine and not stop cold turkey. I'm going by what the phracmey said he's really careful about medicine and always double check for us.
Edit:// I think i'm keeping her on the one the allergist put her on for now. she hasn't complained of headaches the last few days. summer is pretty much here so I don't think she needs the other allergy medicine her doctor prescribed. It's for during allergy season anyway. thanks again!
I'd trust the pharmacist over the physicians. And my whole family is physicians and nurses.
Sorry Kay, I'd trust the Pharmacist. They go to school and specialize in chemistry. Too much antihistamine is a bad thing. I think you need to go back and talk with the doctor and pharmacist - TOGETHER. The doctor can call the pharmacist and they can discuss it. Doctors do NOT have the same training as Pharmacists and to top it off - Doctor's are given medications from sales people and not told ALL of the information. That's why we have Pharmacists!!
Have you had an allergy test done to find out what she is allergic to? Xyzal is the prescription strength of Zyrtec.
Have they determined that allergies are causing her headaches?
It really sounds like your daughter needs a complete physical done, blood draw, PET scan - yep - it's new technology AND it's expensive - but it shows bio-chemistry as well as structure. You need to find out WHY your daughter is having headaches.

This is why even when people go to specialist they still need to go through ONE doctor, their primary care doc. This way no one is given double meds or has any risk of something going wrong.
If the primary care physician still wants to treat your child for allergies then save the money and don't go to the allergist. IF the allergist is prescribing allergy meds for your child then why do you need your primary care doc interfering with the allergists treatment? Go to one doc for her allergies.
Looking up the drug interaction between the two indicates a Moderate interaction - can be clinically significant, avoid taking both outside of special circumstances.
Side effects will be intensified - dizziness, drowsiness, lack of judgement.
Personally, I would ask both of the doctors whether she needs to be on both medications at the same time. If she is having headaches, & takes both medications, will you know which one worked?

My husband is a pharmacist. You wouldn't believe how often pharmacists catch errors in medication. Many times it is because there is a lack of or misunderstanding between different care givers. I would go with what the pharmacist says. I'd also go with what a specialist because they have specialized in that area.
