I just found out that my 8 month old son is allergic to eggs. I am learning that so many things have eggs/egg products in it. If anybody have any helpful sites or information that can help me with this transition (I have to avoid eggs as well since I am still breast feeding him). What did you do to celebrate birthdays (cake & ice cream both have eggs)? Any recipes would be greatly appreciate as well.

Hello S. ~ I know how you feel. My daughter was diagnosed w/a dairy allergy at 9 months & then eggs at 2 years old; she is now 5 and has yet to show any signs of outgrowing her food allergies...we carry benadryl & her epi pens w/us where ever we go. My go to for cakes was www.cherrybrookkitchen.com they have egg, dairy & gluten free mixes as well as frosting; I also use ENER G Brand egg replacer for recipes that may call for eggs even though it is an egg replacer it DOES NOT contain eggs. I am breastfeeding and I have to avoid eggs because it gives my daughter eczema but that doesn't mean she is allergic to eggs. I am avoiding them for now, but won't in the future. I still eat things with eggs in them, like brownies etc. But just don't eat straight eggs. Most babies have to avoid eating eggs until they are over a year and strawberries too. My son couldn't eat strawberries until he was a year and half and now he is fine. How did you find out he had an allergy already ... was he already eating eggs? I'm only curious because I would like to know what to look for if my daughter has an egg allergy. Thank you. :)

My son is also allergic to eggs, he is now 2. There are plenty of vegan cake recipes online that you can look up to make him his birthday cake and other treats. However, in many cases baked goods with eggs are okay for them to eat since they are cooked at a high temp for a long period of time (350 deg, 30 minutes), this changes the protein of the egg. But would not attempt to give him cookies (only baked for 10-12 minutes) or pancakes (cooked for 4 minutes). Consult with his allergist to see if his allergy is not too severe to try baked goods with egg in them.
On BetterTV.com they featured a "healthy Twinkie" recipe ( http://www.better.tv/recipes/healthy-twinkies/ ). It is Vegan and it is delicious! Don't let the tofu filling scare you, you don't even taste it! They are involved, but worth it! My son and Husband Love them! They are completely egg and milk free and I am sure that you can us the batter mix to make a whole cake if you wanted. Try Whipped cream instead of ice cream.

Hello, I know you're looking for recipes, but I wanted to share this with you. Be sure to tell your pediatrician (unless he/she told you) of the egg allergy. Flu shots are egg-based so you should be careful of that. They have non-egg flu vaccines available. I just found this out myself as my son may also have an egg allergy.

Hello S.,

I completely understand what you are going through since my son is also severely allergic to eggs. Good news-- Not every ice cream has eggs. Almost all the Breyers ice creams do not have eggs (only the cookie dough and French vanilla has eggs). Stay away from Haagen-Dazs ice cream, Carvel and cold stone creamery-- their ice creams are mostly made with eggs. Baskin Robin’s website is awesome, because you can print out a list of all of their ice creams and it lets you know if the ice creams are made with eggs (mostly are made without eggs), peanuts, etc. My husband and I go to the Whole Food store in order to buy my son egg free food, such as waffles, pancake mix, cookies, cake mix, frosting, etc.

One last thing, we also bought the book entitled the Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau and we made a cake recipe which turned out to be good. I hope all of this helps.

I'd really recommend asking your pediatrician for advice on resources that may help you better understand the complexities of the egg allergy. My newphew is allergic, but there are no special accommodations with cakes, etc. because of how they're processed.

Or, do a Google search for organizations that address children's food allergies to see if they have recommendations/cookbooks, etc. to help you.

Usually, egg allergies are from the whites vs. the yolks, so you may want to ask your pediatrician/allergist about whether or not you can use that part of the egg. Be mindful that mayonnaise is eggs+oil, so you'll want to avoid anything with mayo (including creamy salad dressings).

I breastfed two children with allergies, so I know where you're coming from! Check out www.welcomingkitchen.blogspot.com for recipes (including cookies, cupcakes, candies and more) that are free of the 8 top allergens, and are also gluten-free and vegan. Also, a little tip ... for most baked goods, if you replace each egg with 1/4 cup applesauce mixed with 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, you will get a good result. There are also commercially available egg replacers that are easy to use. Good luck!

My son is also allergic to eggs. When you are baking, you can substitute each egg with the following mixture:

1.5 TBSP water
1.5 TBSP oil
1 tsp baking powder

Mix those ingredients together, then add to the batter whenever you would add the eggs. It makes things really yummy. I'll try to write more later... my 2 year old is being fussy!
