Egg and Soy Allergy

Hi! Does anyone have a child w/ an Egg and Soy allergy? My 3 year old son is allergic to eggs, soy and grapes. When tested, the soy allergy was mild so we really haven't avoided it...it's in everything, it seems. Lately, we notice that he's developing a few hives when having a processed food item w/ soy...such as a cookie or nutrigrain bar. We've stopped giving them to him, but need other soy and egg free snack ideas. Luckily, he loves fruits, veggies and yogurt, but i need portable snacks for him to take to preschool, special snacks when he asks for a 'treat.' Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank You, ladies, for your fabulous and informative advice!!! Our son had a banana first thing this morning and he broke out into hives right away...now we're thinking it's bananas not soy causing the problems (or possibly both). Made an appointment w/ the allergist to have more testing done. Food allergies can be difficult, but it's nice to see how well you all have dealt with them. Thanks so much!!

I too have a child with many allergies including egg, milk, and peanut and just about everything in the environment, dust, mold, dogs, cats, grasses, etc. My son is 11 so we have avoided these foods for the past 11 years hoping that he would outgrow them but he hasn't. I make most things from scratch and we don't go out to eat much due to the allergies.

I have recently met a lady who took her son who was also allergic to eggs, milk and peanuts to a doctor who treated him using NAET when he was 4 yrs old. The doctor was able to treat him so that he no longer reacts to the allergenic foods and it has been 3 1/2 years and he is still eating eggs, milk and peanuts with no reaction. His severe eczema cleared up as well with the treatment from Dr Kang.

So I have been taking my oldest son who has all the allergies to the same doctor, Dr. Kang. She treated him for egg in just 2 visits and now he is able to eat egg with no reaction at all. His eczema is clearing up, his skin finally looks like a normal kids skin without having to use the steroid creams! She is treating him for milk and we are hoping for the same results. Dr. Kang is from Beijing and was a professor at the University of Beijing and is just an awesome doctor! She is so great with the kids! Her office is across from Paoli Hospital. I too have children with food allergies. I know "snacks on the go" can prove to be difficult but have found some good alternatives. I am a fan of Enjoy Life products. Our regular grocery store now carries them too. The products are free of the most common allergens and are made in a dedicated facility. The very berry "granola" bars and snickerdoodle cookies are a favorite in our house. Although a little more expensive, nice to have for a quick grab and go snack. I have recently discovered Annies Cheddar Bunnies (similar to gold fish) and Honey Bunny Grahams (like teddy grahams) that are a safe food in our house. Rold Gold brand pretzels don't use veggie oil (soybean) either so I always know I can grab them from the store!

I have a "snack basket" in our pantry that I keep filled with safe snacks to just grab as we need at home or on the go. I prepare little snack sized baggies with the bunnies or a "trail mix" of cherrios, mini marshmellows, cranberries, mini pretzels, etc. Also raisin boxes, dried apple pieces and the enjoy life cookies and bars. It has made running out the door much easier.

I recently searched for "eggless cookie recipes" and found some good ones that the whole family enjoyed. I freeze some and have them on hand to take to birthday parties etc. Rice Krispie Treats are another good safe treat. Dip the corner in fun sprinkles and they can be just as festive as a cupcake at a party.

Last May my son was diagnosed with egg and shellfish allergies just weeks before his 8th birthday. So now I have become and expert on what he can have since alot of things he used to eat he now cannot.

Go-gurt, rice krispy treats (kelloggs, check label for other brands), oreos, fig newtons, nutter butters, goldfish crackers, pretzels (check label) - these are some of my son's favorite "special snacks", fruit snacks

also, look for vegan recipes for cookies, cakes, etc. because vegans do not eat eggs, I have found many more recipes this way instead of looking for egg free!

I have an egg allergy and let me tell you it is a PAIN because egg is in everything! Go onlone to WEB MD and look up egg allergy. There are all kinds of names which is in food for eggs that one would never know are egg products. The list is long, but worth knowing what is eggs and what is not... here are a few examples of the different names referring to eggsin food:

Globulin
Albumin
Apovitellenin
Livetin
Ovalbumin
Ovotransferrin
Lyzoyme
Simplesse
Vitellin
Silico-albuminate

Now these are just a few on a long list of what are different names for eggs. I got the majority of these names off of WEB MD. Hope this helps!

In our house we have : egg, soy, peanut, dog, dust, trees, mold allergies so I completely know where you are coming from!!!

A word of warning, Any restaurant will use soy, even on steaks and stuff you wouldn't think of.

If the egg allergy is severe it may not be the soy in the cookies but the egg that is causing the reaction.

Here are the things we've done to help out. Switch to canola vegetable oil because regular is made from soy. Don't use margarine use real butter since it is made from milk and not soy.

We make our own breads, send in our own desserts, and carry meals with us when we go to homes of friends. Be a lable reader. Soy and eggs like to hide under innocent looking long words that you can't translate. Eggs show up in many products – cakes, pastries, cookies, mayonnaise and egg substitutes that frequently contain just egg whites.

There are other names that eggs can be called on food labels. Avoid any product with the “Ov” prefix listed as an ingredient, for example, Ovalbumin.

Avoid anything that has ‘soy’ or ‘lecithin’ listed in the ingredients. This could include soybeans, soy protein, soy sauce, and soybeans.

Some children can tolerate soy oil and others can’t. I’d err on the side of caution and not use soy oil.

Soy protein may be present in an ingredient such as vegetable protein or natural flavoring.

I used to call cereal companies to find out what "natural flavoring" meant and whether that translated to "soy."

Avoid health food stores. Most people translate healthy as "filled with more soy than you can shake a stick at!"

If you have eczema watch the labels on your shampoos and your skin creams. We didn't do this once and we regretted it because our child broke out and began screaming in pain because the skin lotion was made from soy!

Avoid avoid avoid!

My son once touched the container that holds the eggs and had a severe reaction. Check the ingredients on salad dressings since most have eggs and a lot have soy. Italian is the only one I can think of off hand that might be safe. And I'd still check for soy. We have also started using olive oil and vinegar for our dressings and make them ourselves so that we're always sure.

For snacks: celery with cream cheese and raisins (ants on a log), no bake cookies since you're not allergic to peanut butter. Store bought snacks include: peppermint sticks, gummy fish, bears, worms etc, skittles. Just read the boxes. Strangely a lot of them are ok but you just have to read labels to see. We send my daughter's teacher in a bag to pull her treats from so that she has something. At one point we had found safe cookies too but that was many many years ago.

I'll put more on here as I think of them... We don't do a lot of snacks in my house. We eat ice cream cakes at birthdays. We don't do cookies or regular cakes at all.
