I have two cat's, one is only four years old and the other one is 20 years old. The eldest one still has a sharp mind, good sight, good hearing but always pees on my rugs for some reason!! She has been to the vet and she said that my cat does have some kidney problems but they aren't really that bad for her age. The vet has put her on a special food to help with the kidney problem. She poops in the litter box as well as urinates in it at times, but it's just something with the rugs! I have taken up all of the rugs at the moment and she hasn't peed anywhere since. It's just something with the rugs!! I did buy some repellent stuff from Petsmart and Petco, but neither of them worked at all. Do any on you happen to have a great product that you used or heard of, even a homemade product that worked? Any help you great ladies ( or men ) can give me would be so much appreciated.
Just plain rubbing alcohol, that's the main ingredient in the expensive stuff you get from the pet stores.
If your kitty is old, still eating and happy to be with you (not suffering in any way).....perhaps just fold up your rugs and enjoy the time you have left with her.

My mother has a 20-year-old cat as well. She started doing the same thing. Turns out, the rugs are a lot easier on her arthritis than the litter pan, which she has to climb into.
You might be dealing with a pain issue. My mother started putting the litter in a boot mat (those shallow rubber pans people put wet boots in during winter months to prevent puddles and salt marks on floors). The cat was a little weird about it at first, but because she doesn't have to climb into it, she eventually started using it and has not peed on the floors since.
"Urine Destroyer" is available at Home Depot, if you need to clean the rugs. As for prevention, have you tried "Cosequin"? It comes in capsules and is available at pet stores. Empty the one capsule a day over wet food - worked wonders for our elderly cat's periodic urinary infections and arthritis pain. She is like a different (pain-free) cat. I'm so glad we came across it. Good luck with your little friend. One more thought - is your litter box down any stairs? We provided a box on the main floor (rather than in the basement) and it seemed to be easier for her use.

Big sigh for you. This just seems to be very common in elderly cats. We have a 15 year old cat and have discovered various pee spots. Soaking the spot in pure vinegar seems to help.
My cat lost her sense of smell when she was 16 and couldn't find her litter box. She never used our carpet, but always a bathmat or anything that was laying on the carpet. I had to put her outside the majority of the time. She died a few months later of old age.
