Hi Fiona,
I'm from New York originally and have lived in Alpharetta for over 9 years. My nine year old daughter is in 4th grade and my six year old son is in kindergarten. They both attend Dolvin Elementary, an amazing school!
I disagree with the earlier posts. Roswell is a very nice area but you need to come down and visit to see the differences between Roswell and Alpharetta yourself. You may not agree, especially since they don't know anything about you and your likes/dislikes.
To answer your questions though...if you ask 10 different people you'll probably get 10 different answers. I am a Realtor and have been one in this area for over 6 years. I've sold houses to many teachers in a number of different schools so I've been able to pick their brains on the inside scoop.
One of my best friends is a special needs teacher at Northwestern Middle School located on the West side of GA400 in Alpharetta. It's known as one of the best schools around. She gives me a lot of information too.
Although I have an interest in speaking with you due to the nature of my business I'd be more than happy to help you regardless.
In my humble opinion you almost can't go wrong in Alpharetta. You can check out the schools on my web site at www.lisachasin.com and see test scores (they all rank well).
Since my children go to Dolvin Elementary I can tell you that we have a non-profit organization at our school, The Foundation, that was created by parents a number of years ago. The goal for this group is to raise extra funds to purchase items for the school. At the beginning of every year The Foundation sends out a survey to the teachers that asks for their "wish list." Then a list is compiled by The Foundation which is their goal for the year.
The Foundation has two major fund-raisers every year. The first one is a golf tournament (which we just had) and it raised over $30k last year. The second one is the silent/live auction. The auction raised $50k last year. The Foundation has purchased many things over the last few years including: smart/activeboards (flat screen high tech something or others) for all the 4th & 5th grade classrooms (their goal is to have them in all classrooms within the next year or so); white boards in all classrooms (instead of blackboards for kids with allergies and asthma); custom portable computer stations with 16 computers that goes from classroom to classroom; TV's on wallmounts in everyone class room (for the morning news done by the students); new rugs for all classrooms; 60+ new macs, etc. etc. You get the idea.
Please contact me if you have any questions. I can email or mail you tons of information on Alpharetta, Roswell and other surrounding areas with good schools (south Forsyth county).
BTW...where in NY are you from? I was just in Manhattan for my dad's surprise 65th b'day a couple of weeks ago. I love NY but don't plan on moving back any time soon...Alpharetta Rocks!
Hope to hear from you. My cell is: ###-###-####.
