Finally received my new Washer and Dryer yesterday (after waiting a month for lowes to get this in stock) and just read the instructions saying GE "recommends" using HE Laundry Soap in energy star washing machines. I have a stock pile of "regular" laundry soap (thanks to coupons!) Can you use regular laundry soap????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Everyone. I emailed GE and the tech said it was ok to use smaller amounts of regular laundry soap on manual water settings (S,M,L,EX,) and to use HE soap on the auto water settings. I did look at most of my bottles of soap and found some say that they can be used for "all" washers, including HE. I can still use baking soda, Clorox 2, and vinegar too!!!

I would not. I would donate the regular soap. Even though food banks usually give out food, they may also take the soap and other household products, and you may be able to get a receipt for taxes by doing so. Or donate to an animal shelter or other group that needs to do a lot of laundry.

No. Take the laundry detergent you have stocked piled back and purchase/exchange for HE detergent.

Call GE directly http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/contact/
And talk to them.

If you use the regular detergent? You will end up with soap in your laundry. Do you want that? I don't think so. You purchased Energy Star for a reason. Using regular in an HE - you'll end up washing your clothes several times, even if you only use a teaspoon of detergent.

Good luck!

Check your manual/documents. Using non HE detergent may void your warranty.

HE washers use so little water that you must also use very little detergent. You can use regular liquid detergent, but no more than 1 tablespoon for the largest load size. Less for smaller loads. HE detergent is made to not suds much, so if you're getting a lot of bubbles with the regular stuff, use even less. You may also want to do a second rinse cycle if your machine has that setting.

When the machine is not in use, always leave the lid up and any dispensing cups/trays open. This is how you avoid the stinky HE washer problem. If there is any residue left in the cups, wipe it out. Run a cleaning cycle with hot water and Affresh or similar every month.

No. High Efficiency washers use less water than old washers. Like Wild Woman said, if you use regular detergent you will be running the clothes through several times which would defeat the purpose of the machine.

Yes, I hate the HE laundry soap and it leaves a scummy feeling on my clothes. I use regular Gain Original and use about....2/3's as much? Maybe half as much? It still doesn't suds a lot and that's the big issue. If you use too much it can suds too much and not get rinsed out.

I have NEVER had a smell in my washer either. I use bleach, vinegar, Downy with the green lid, and Clorox ll in my washer and have used it daily for over a year and a half.

Everyone says they have horrible smells in theirs and they have to buy a special cleaner. Maybe since I do laundry in mine just like it was a top loader that's why mine doesn't do that gunky stuff.

No. Also, people complain about the washer getting stinky. I've never had that problem with my GE Top Load Washer (High Efficiency). I just leave the lid up when not in use. I know the front loaders have problems with smell/mold.

Check the soap again. It just might be HE. I was waiting for my washer to stop spinning and decided to read my soap bottle. It says it is HE in really small letters on the back.
