Enlarged Kidney on 22 Week Ultrasound

Hi there,

I am 24 weeks in to my third pregnancy, and my husband and I decided firmly that we do not want to find out he sex of the baby. We have already been blessed with a girl and a boy so we will truly be happy either way. At my 22 week ultrasound, though, the doctor informed me that one of the kidneys is enlarged, but that he was not terribly concerned. I sort of feel disappointed now because we had this issue with my son as well (it resolved itself by the end of the pregnancy), and I know from my research then that in these situations, it is almost always a boy. While I am not disappointed if we end up having a boy, it is more about having the surprise sort of ruined. Has anyone had, or known someone who had, a girl with enlarged kidneys in utero? Just curious! Thanks!

What can I do next?

i had the same thing happen with my older daughter (she will be 5 next month) while i was pregnant with her. Both of her kidneys were slightly enlarged while i was pregnant, and they monitored her throughout the rest of the pregnancy (had me so worried). About 2 weeks after she was born she had an ultrasound that showed her kidneys were normal. All that is to say it can happen with girls too! i've actually never heard that it is more common in boys.

Seriously, just worry about your baby's health and stop being mad that your surprise may have been ruined. Poor doctor was just trying to do his job. If he wouldn't have told you, most people would have been mad.

Went thru this with my DIL when she had her 20 week ultrasound and subsequent ultrasounds. End result, normal kidney confirmed by ultrasound when she was born. Try not to worry. With this baby, she is 26 weeks, they said possible heart defect. So far everything looks good. Try not to worry. Hugs and prayers.

This happened with my daughter. She was healthy, no problems other than a bit of jaundice shortly after birth. She'll be 17 (years!) next month. Don't worry about the enlarged kidney and don't fret about whether or not you "know" it's a boy or a girl. They can be wrong anyway. We knew the gender for both our kids and it didn't take away any if the excitement or surprise of meeting our kids for the first time.

I had a girl with this. When she was born the problem did not go away so we are well into our 4th surgery and lots of other things. Girls can have this as well as boys. Hope whatever you have is happy and healthy.

Goggle it. Be prayerful that it's healthy.

Side note. I did not want to know either. My 2nd trimester nurse took a guess and said I'm carrying high and swore that my child would be female. It was/is a boy. So ...

My oldest daughter had an enlarged kidney that showed up in ultrasound. We never would have even know if I had not had an US at about 37 weeks due to her large size. It turned out to be a mega ureter causing a renal fullness. We went to a urologist when she was born and she has been fine. My sister and my Aunt both have kidney abnormalities as well...It seems to run in females in my family! I hope you can go back to wondering what the gender will be! We never found out with both my pregnancies and I loved being surprised! Good luck in your pregnancy!
