ok moms, just a quick question for all of you who have gone before me....how much can i expect to pay in enrollment fees when i take my son to enroll for kindergarten next month? i am working on our budget and i literally have NO idea whether it will be $50 or $500. although i'm assuming not $500 :) and i know it will vary by region/neighborhood, etc...just looking for a ballpark consensus. thanks in advance! (i guess i could call the school huh? i like talking to you guys better :))

What can I do next?

In Olathe, it is $80. I believe it is due on the enrollment date of July 26th. Also, if they are attending full time kindergarten that fee is due monthly beginning in August. If you will be utilizing a bus you will have that fee (due date unknown) and then also lunch at school if you choose (due date unknown).

I am a kindergarten teacher, and our public school does have enrollment fees for both half/full day, as well as all grade levels. It is only $15 for kinder and $20 for upper grades. Of course there are PTA dues, school supplies, lunch $, uniforms, physicals. But total costs for all that are under $200 in my area. You could check your school district website while you're reading these responses. :)

Ha!! I just had to write that check! I had NO idea there was a "Fees for Books and Supplies/Materials" check I had to pay for public kindergarten. Ours was $115.50. Thought that my school taxes paid for that!!! :/

Hard to remember, as my son has just finished his first year and we paid those fees in the summer. I wrote one check for, I believe, an activities fee. It was around $160? I think the other two checks were not required. One was for lunches/milk. Not knowing whether he would eat school lunches or want a packed lunch I only wrote a check for $20. The third was to the PTO. They had clothing from the previous school year for sale and were taking orders for the student address/phone book.

It really does vary from school to school, but very few schools are able to get away with charging nothing. I think our school district is in pretty good shape. The school supply list wasn't too long, and it seemed as if all of the items would actually be used in his classroom. One of my co-workers lives in a different district, and the supply list their included items for the office and reams of paper. Not always easy for schools to operate with current budgets.

How exciting for your son! I hope he has a great year.

It depends on where you live. And, yes, there are fees for public schools in some states. It shouldn't be too much.

As for the question that always arises, "It's public school. Where do my taxes go?" It costs about $11,000 to educate a child per year. So, yes, our taxes do pay for education.

There are no enrollment fees for public school.

If you are signing up for before and after care, or clubs and activities those cost money, and you may want to put some money in his lunch account... but NONE of that has to be done the day you enroll.

Good luck with kindergarten! It's such an adventure.

In Washington public schools, half day kg is free, full day costs money and varies by district. My district is one of the more expensive at $360-ish a month! That fee was due before school started. We also had to write checks for supplies at our school instead of buying them which was around $45.

Are you enrolling in a private school? If it's public, are you positive their are fees? There are no enrollment fees for public school here. I've never heard of that!! Check your school districts website, they really should outline any fees and things needed.

Here you do not pay enrollment fees for public school. When school starts there could be fees for activities, PTA, fundraisers, etc. but not for enrollment. Check with your school to be sure.

Wow, they must have raised the fees. We moved from Olathe back to Mo. 5 years ago and to enroll my son it was 49 for kindergarten and 55 for first grade and up...or something close to that.
I read another's reply that it was 80 bucks now. Wow!
Plus you will need to figure in school supplies. that can be later on when school starts so add about 30-35 more into your budget for that. Have you decided if your child will take lunch or eat at school?

I would budget 100 bucks or so to get you started.

It varies from school district to school district or state to state. Do call the district office to ask. (Though maybe the school secretary can tell you.)

Public school here, and we didn't pay a dime.

Of course, that doesn't include before/after care.
