Hi - I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Otolaryngology dept @ Children's Hospital they could share. We have an appt with Dr. Laurie Ohlms for my 8 month old who has suffered chronic ear infections. We just don't know what to expect. Our ped told us they would do a hearing test to make sure the fluid isn't impeding his hearing.

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you all for the info! You have completely reassured me. His appt is Feb 25th, so we will see what happens. Thanks again!

Hey S.!
We just had another appointment yesterday with our ENT/Otolaryngologist at Children's and we simply adore the care they give my 28 month old! We see Dr. Mark Volk and I truly trust his expertise and judgement - and my daughter thinks he's such fun (which he is with her!).
Our first appointment was at CHB-Waltham and we did the hearing test (this was a fantastic experience!) and then a complete exam. We returned yesterday at the Longwood office for a follow up visit (ear check only) and will return again in April for another follow up. My daughter has a wonderful time there and actually doesn't want to leave!
The hearing test is in sound proof rooms and with my little one she had to do a series of actions when she heard a sound - with and without headphones. For a little one, like your muchkin, I'm sure they have test that will be age appropriate but with similar results.
If you need any further info, contact me offline. I also work for Children's so having my daughter's care here was a no-brainer decision :)

Hi S., As a matter of fact. I deal with them on a frequent basis. My daughter is just 4 and has had tubes in her ears since she was a year old. She was born with cleft lip and palate so that was part of the procedure. Anyway, We have seen Dr. Ohlms. They do a wonderful job. Very compasionate and understanding. We felt very at ease and comfortable with the whole team. She just was discharged from Children's today for a minor procedure partyly to replace the tubes in her ears. She has had a problem with fluid in her ears. They do a hearing test to see if the ear is blocked. They may suggest putting tubes in his ears. If that is the case, it is a 10 minute procedure which they do in the day surgery outpatient. My daughter had her first surgery at 3months. See what they have to say and trust them, I have had much good luck with them............good luck!

My son saw Dr. Jones @ Childrens (he also has hours in Waltham & Lexington which is a little easier than traveling to downtown). He was excellent! They did the hearing test, which they make very fun for the kids. Once we found out the fluid was impeding his hearing we decided to go ahead with the surgery - it was the best thing we could have done for him...and he's been free of ear infections since. Wish we had done it sooner for him. Best of luck to you!

Hi S.,

ALthough my experience was a little different I wanted to reassure you that the ORL department at Children's is AMAZING! My now 3 year old was born with a rapidly growing tumor in her throat and spent most of the first year of her life under the care of the ORL surgeons at Children's. They treated our entire family with respect, care and kindness. As parents we were in shock and they walked us through every step of the way and were incredibly patient with our questions and concerns. Your child will be in excellent hands. Good luck!
