Etiquette - Reaching Out to Alums for Job Opportunities

My school has always told us to reach out to alumni to get jobs but I have no idea how to go about doing this in real life. How the heck do you just call up a person you've never met before and say, "Hi! I went to the same school you did! Any way you could help me get a job at your company?" ??? Do any of you have any tips as to what the proper way to reach out to stranger alums is? How would you want to be approached and would you be willing to help? What exactly should I say? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Join linkedin.com also, a lot of college alum societies have get togethers and websites you can network together on there. I was reading an article about this as well recently that said go to your alumni socials and ask around if anyone has heard of any openings or know anything about if their company was hiring.

You would be surprised, a lot of people have major school pride and will respond positively to someone they shared a school with.

You can just call or email and say, "I was looking at the almuni association for our school, xyz, and came across your name. I greatly respect and interest in your field. I am currently seeking employment in this field and would like to know if you know of any leads."

This link tells more on the actual etiquette of finding them for their particular college, contacting them by their preferred method and such, I really think it will help you. Your school should have something similar:

I received an email from an alumni that said exactly that.

My name is Bob. I will be in the DC area on May 20th and I was given your name as someone who might be able to help me make some contacts in the area....

I didn't respond since I am just a peion at my company.
I just received an invite to an alumni get together in the area in Sept. There you can do a lot of networking, etc.

Also, try the website LinkedIn.com. Its like Facebook for business.

That is a tough one. I am assuming that you have someone in mind that works at a company you like? I would send them an email if possible first, kind of a heads up. Let them know that you like their company and found out from the alumni network that they worked there. See if they would be willing to meet for coffee, etc. to talk more about the types of jobs they have. Let them know that you will follow up in X days with a phone call. You can also give a little information about yourself.

We own our company and we are both on Linkedin.com for business networking. We get a lot of hits of people looking for jobs.

You connect through college, corporation, etc.

Personally, I wouldn't do it but I do get a lot of contacts, especially from college aged people we know.

I suppose it couldn't hurt.
