Do you have any pets?
I've heard of cases where pets and people keep reinfecting each other.
Both pets and people had to be treated at the same time.
My son was put on amoxicillin for 10 day..3 days after he was positive for strep again..they put him in azithromycin it's been over 24 hours (2 doses in) and he is saying his throat still hurts...is this normal?..usually his symptoms go away after one day.
Took him to the dr again lastnight...still tested positive for strep...she said she has seen this before and she put him on a 10 day of another form of antibiotics (something with a c)...said if he test + again in 10 days he needs to go to ENT....said it's either a really resistant strain or it has set up shop in his tonsils where the antibiotics can't touch...meaning he would need them removed!
So worried:(

I'm not sure but I think I tested positive for strep when I had mono. The mono really attacked my throat and it hurt like no sore throat had ever hurt. And I had strep a lot before that. So maybe have him tested for mono if you didn't already. I agree usually strep reacts quickly to the antibiotics. And even if he's not a teenager, it could be mono. Lots of kids get it and don't even know. We had a doctor who knew to test my 10 year old. We were shocked it was positive.
Strep throat was a childhood nightmare for me. Not sure how old your son is but has he tried to gargle peroxide? If you take the peroxide route, try every hour to gargle. He can also gargle salt water, lemon water and Apple cider vinegar. I know it sounds unreal but it works. Also, zinc lozengers will assist in coming against the infection and strengthen the tonsils. Lastly, this onset may be caused by the weather (allergies).
My mom had strep for almost a year. Her doctor eventually cultured her and treated the culture with various antibiotics to find out which one would work.
There are so many antibiotic-resistant infections ("super bugs") due to the overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial products - these bugs flourish in hospitals, schools, public places and then get taken into homes. It may be a while before you find something that works. Sounds awful for your son - so sorry. I do think testing for mono might make sense but FYI the basic test is often negative so go for the more precise test.
Whenever I've needed antibiotics, I'm not sure I always felt significant relief in such a short time. But don't trust me. I would call your doctor and ask. If your doctor says he should be feeling better by now, it's quite possible your doctor will want to see him or possibly have suggestions to help relieve those symptoms.
Call your docs 24 hour nurse/advice line and talk to them.
It's not the typical but it is fairly normal in severe cases. I've had it a time or two that took two rounds of antibotics. My daughter had it so bad once that she got worse after the first meds were started and for a few days had to double up on antibotics (one was 10 or 14 days and the other 5...she had been on the first for about 4 days and it was getting worse rather than better).
I will tell you that I was told by a great doctor that regular penicillin is THE best thing for strep. The others cover a wider array but penicillin is the bomb...and it's cheaper too.
My daughter had chronic sinusitis and was put on Amoxicillin. It took about 3 days into that 10 day dose to feel some sort of effect. I have also taken antibiotics (the Z-Pak) that took about 2-3 days to start acting and based on what my doctor and other people who took it said, this seems to be about right. I would wait another day or 2 and if he is not feeling better, then I would go back to the doctor and let him know.
I've had strep three times in the last year and a half. Both of my kids have had it 1-2 times in the same time frame. One of my kids was given the same antibiotic. All of our prescriptions have been for 10 days. One of my bouts with strep I was in bed with fever over 100 for over 100 hours after starting my antibiotic. My husband called the nurse line twice to ask if he should bring me to the ER. If the strep was there for awhile before he started the antibiotic it will probably take more than 24 hours for it to kick in. If after another day it hasn't stared to improve, check with his doc.
Make sure you keep at this to get rid of the strep. There are complications to strep, like scarlet fever and rheumatic fever. There's another one that I can't remember the name of but it's very scary and longterm. My sister had scarlet fever and it attacked her joints - she couldn't walk for several weeks, and her skin peeled like she was a zombie. It was truly awful. Rheumatic fever hits the heart and that is even worse.
I'd get a second opinion. Be vigilant with it.
Not the right medication for that strep.
That's a LONG time to be on antibiotics. I would take him back and see what the next step could be.
Azithromycin is the right medicine, because that's what my son who is allergic to anything in the "cillin" family takes and it works for him every time. My other two can have the "cillin" meds and that's what they get - again, works every time.
But he might have something else other than strep too and the meds just aren't fighting it enough. So I would definitely go back.
