My son takes his with cottage cheese because it is supposed be even more effective. You can doctor up the cottage cheese. But most of all the oil either flax or fish oil. google for more information.

My dad had recently had issues with this and they gave him a spray that is ???? Zinc. Anyway, you might just get a zinc cream or add zinc to diet.

My daughter had eczema for a number of years. She'd use a cream that would help for a while but would break out during the summer months.

I tried everything I knew and then I started to focus on her diet. I'm a firm believer that most ailments can be healed with proper diet. I eliminated processed foods and dairy from her diet. I washed her clothes in all "free" products, and make her wear cotton clothing. I also started her on Vitamin C, Omega-3 and Cod Liver Oil supplements. She has not had any problems for almost a year now.

Start with the dairy products first and see if that helps. Here is an article similar to the one I read about effective treatments. Best wishes....

If I remember right, my son had that and I used either Arbonne Baby Line lotion or Eucerin as much as I could. Sorry I cant remember, I think I used Arbonne baby shampoo on his head and the Eucerin on his arms.

What is your daughter eating? Many people (especially little ones) have trouble with processed wheat and sugar. My friend had bad Excema and cut white flour and refined sugar out of his diet and now has no problem at all.

I have horrible eczema as well. Mine is mostly caused from food allergies, but is aggrevated by chemicals. I found a fantastic company that manufactures nearly 400 products that we use every day and they make them without harsh chemicals. I love it. Also, they have an outstanding lotion called "Renew." It works better than my prescriptions (that like your daughter would only clear up my eczema for a bit and then it would be back with a vengence). I would love to talk with you more about these great products and how I believe they would help your daughter's eczema tremendously if not even completely. Mine is caused by food allergies (and I eat some of what I shouldn't anyway) so mine will never go away, but it is so much better and definitely managable now.

The Activ Group in Southlake, Texas makes a product called CurActiv Super Strength that is terrific for problem skin, including excemas. This is the same company that makes BurnStuff, which I've purchased at Walgreens, and is the most incredible burn product ever. My son has this too. I've had to buy the aveno body wash for excema and then use cetaphil lotion all the time. the combo of those two things, plus the prescription lotion and hydrocortisone (2%) cream, seems to keep it under control.

I personally purchased a Dead Sea Salt from a cart just outside the Disney Store at Grapevine Mills. Within one week, my excema was gone - and it was really bad....cracking, peeling and bleeding. It never came back. I swear by it! It burns a bit when you first start using it but that is because the salt is healing it. Good luck!

Eczema is usually due to food allergies. You might have a biopsy done to rule out dermititis herpetiformis, which is the skin reaction to gluten (the protein found in wheat, rye, barley and most oats). My younger son gets eczema anytime he inadvertently consumes gluten, since he's been on a Gluten-free/Casein Free diet for 4+ years. Dairy and peanuts are other very common culprits. The gluten is the most likely suspect given that there are 2+ million people that have yet to be diagnosed with the disorder, but statistically, it is far more common in the US than most pediatricians were taught in medical school. The newer research was started by an Italian doctor when he came to the US 10 years ago and couldn't figure out why there weren't the same percentage of celiacs in the US as there are in Europe given the number of Americans of European descent - his research shows it is as common, just not diagnosed in the US (nor taught as part of continuing education) since there are no drugs -it just requires a dietary change that can be challenging.

We use Melaleuca products also. I posted for today to Rita R. See her post. She posted after you. I left her some small suggestions. Including, looking into Melaleuca products and changing prescription to Elidel if you are concerned about the steroid use in the cream.

J., IF you even have time to read this after all the other posts, I'm positive it would help your daughter! We delt with severe excema on my son for a couple years and the allergist never really helped.(He helped with the allergies and asthma, just not the excema) I'm pretty sure we tried 90% of all the products I saw listed in your other responses with no relief; just alot of half used tubes and expensive co-pays! Finally, I got refered to a dermatologist on Hulen in Ft. Worth that made all the difference! She (can't remember her name but I could figure it out if you need me too!) gave me a prescription for a natural body oil called Dema-Smoothe/FS. It's amazing! My son was completly cleared up within 4 days of using it. It's a natural non-greasy oil that you put on them when they are still wet from a bath. It smells terrific, like baby oil but better! It is a mail order product from Hill Dermaceuticals but you do need a prescription. They sent it to me in about 2 days, and sent free samples of other products! This has been several years ago but I remember being pleasantly surprised because it was only about $12 or $15!(when I googled derma smoothe to make sure the company was still around, I noticed Walgreens had it listed so maybe you can get it there now and not just through the mail!) I never even had to refill my bottle because you only have to use very little! Good luck!

According to the vinegar book, put apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball and wipe the affected area. The vinegar helps to balance the Ph on the skin. This has worked well with a neighbor that suffered from bad excema. She said the vinegar worked better than the Rx medications she had been give.

I have three daughters that deal with it too..One of them has it severely and the other two have a mild case. I can say that following the plan with my daughter that has the medicine creams.. it was worked!!!! On my second daughter the daily routine helps - but she stil needs the creams to get it under control. Once it's under control she's ok. My third daughter's went away with the bathing routine alone. The doc told me that keeping the finger nails short and clean are important.... my daughter with the severe case had a staph infection due to the itching and not keeping clean (the itching and staph made it horrible for her to take a shower)

Here's what the doc told me...

- Daily 10-15 minute clear, warm bath with minimal use of non-drying soap (ie. Dove, Basis, Cetaphil or Lever 2000). DO NOT USE IVORY soaps, liquid soaps or bubble bath products.

- After bathing, gently wipe away excess water with your hands, then pat gently with a soft towel and immediately apply mineral oil (found over-the-counter in constipation section of the pharmacy) all over the skin to lock in the moisture from the bath. Follow with medicated creams to the eczema hot spots and finish with an applications of heavy duty moisturizing cream (ie Aquaphor, Cetephil, Curel, Eucerine.. use creams, NOT lotions)

- Apply additional applications of moisturizing creams as frequently as needed to keep the skin soft and smooth.

- Use an antihistamine (benadryl) at nighttime to help them to not itch

AVOID TRIGGERS AND IRRITANTS:
- Dust mite encasements for the mattress and pillows are recommended for the dust mite allergic individuals with eczema.
- Use cotton clothing, underwear, socks: no wool or synthetics
- Use unscented skin care products and avoid perfumes
- Use free & clear laundry detergents and double rinse. DO NOT USE FABRIC softeners.

I hope this helps - I totally understand! Oh and I took my girls to an allergry/eczema doc instead of their regular doc... nothing the regular doc was doing helped long term.

There is a great lotion by Canus it is called Lil Goat;'s Milk Body Butter. You can order it on www.mothernature.com This worked wonders for my son and serveral friend' children. They also sell the soap. I love it and would highly recommend it. It is affordable and you usually get it in a few days. Good luck...I know it is so frustrationg when you can't help them.

A quick question, have you tried to make up your own cream? There are some natural oils that help with things like this. You could try tea tree oil, cod liver oil, avocado oil and coconut oil for starters. If you have any questions, email me and I will answer any further questions or give you ideas. Good luck to you. I can tell you so many ways that you may be hendering your child's eczema from healing up and staying healed. CHEMICALS are in every thing we use in our homes to clean, bathe, and wash our clothes. You HAVE to rid your home environment of ALL the CHEMICALS in order to make a difference. I know this for a fact, because I have done it. I have been with a company that manufactures non-toxic products for 3 yrs now. The company is 24 yrs old, and has over 350 products! You will never have a good handle on the eczema as long as you still use the chemically enhanced products in your home. Even if you just use the Renew lotion, that this company manufacturers...the chemicals in your other products are still going to make it flare up.

Even the TIDE FREE....is chemically enhanced. The chemical names are masked by other "non-chemical" sounding names. Believe me....I've done a ton of research on this! My daughter has had eczema since birth mostly in the spots each time (face, arms, and sides). We dont have anything close to the problem that you are having. But here are some things that have helped us. Although we are still battling it! We are still trying to find out what is causing her flair ups as well.

*We wash her clothes seperate
*We use Drift soap and on the extra Spin cycle to make sure all the soap is out.
*Bath time use luke warm water.
*Bath soap we use Cetaphil or Johnson's and Johnsons hypoallergetic formula.
*Change air filters every month
*Vacume and dust every week
*Lotion her throughout the day
*Food wise we try to go Organic or control the intake of food with hormones or preservitives she eats.
* She is on a Lactose Free diet as well.
*She is on Zyrtec as well (she has Allergy Shiners) not sure what she is allergic to yet.

Her Ped Dermatolist is Dr Fred Ghali ###-###-#### (Grapevine)

He put her on Alclometasone Dipropionate Cream 0.05% (Steroid cream). I would try taking her to the Dermatologist and see if he can help...wouldnt hurt.

Please,Please,Please try the RENEW skin lotion by Meleluca. I swear by it. It makes my three yr old sons,who has eczema,skin feel like a newborns. Bathe her only every other day ul-less she realy needs it. Water is so drying to the skin and make sure the water isn't very hot. My son's skin is a lot better now and only have flair ups occasionally. Hope this helps!
We also wash with free and clear detergent and use Aveeno baby wash that has no dyes and such.

we use aveeno soap from wal-mart and lubriderm lotion. check in the baby section for the saop its for excema. My husband daughter and nephew all have excema and this helps. also we use johnson and johnsons shampoo from the baby section witch has no soap in it. just make sure you stay away from dye and fragrance in your lotions.

One thing that has REALLY worked for my daughter is Johnson's and Johnson's Soothing Naturals. There is an Intensive Cream and a Balm Stick that are GREAT.

My daughter who is now 2 1/2 had previously been struggling with eczema as well. We tried prescription lotions etc and everything seemed to just aggitate it and she was uncomfortable , baths would burn etc. I was advised to switch laudry detergent to All Free and Clear and to wash all of our households laundry in the same detergent - for holding her , she using our rags when bathing etc would still be there to aggrivate her skin because of transfer to transfer . Then we bath her with Aveeno - baby so it is as sensitive as it gets. Also light clothing - cotton so the skin can breathe. So far these steps have helped us tremendously and keeps the going to the doctor / prescription visits down. I felt like the pharmacy should be part of my family or something as much as I saw them. Also we have recently had food allergy testing and received the results back today. Deborah Bain , MD, FAAP. Her facility is Healthy Pediatrics # ###-###-####. She has been on channel 11 news a couple of times. I was totally shocked of the results. Soy , wheat gluten , cows milk ... Soy is what we have been informed by her ped to feed her due to her reflux . And eliminating wheat to help autism / sensory issues she also battles. So she is now on gluten free diet and has to switch to rice or goats milk. Everything will work out for you. Just keep positive :)

I love Aveeno's excema baby lotion. Make sure it says "excema" on it. Our walmart doesn't carry it - I have to get it at Babies R Us, but it's worth the trip. My daughter has excema and we put it on after her bath (make sure to lotion up within 3 minutes after getting out of the bath to lock in moisture!!), and it keeps hers at a manageable level.

My little boy has had this issue since he was in NICU. He is now 3 and I think I have FINALLY figured it out!! We too had him on steroid creams. But, as you have found out, it is not a permanent sollution. So I found that I need to do the following: Wash everything in hypoallergenic laundry detergent, and DO NOT USE fabric softener. My child also has asthma with this so these other things may help as well. I put a hepa filter from sharper image next to his bed. I covered his matress in an allergy proof cover, and even put duct tape over the zipper. (I heard dust mites can add to the problem). And lastly, I give Jax a bath every single night. Do not use bubble bath of any kind. This dries out the skin. He is only allowed to stay as long as it takes to get him all washed off. I use cetaphil. And I pull him out and while he is still wet, Aquaphor, and slather it on. Then in the morning, apply again, and after a nap, again. I know it seems like alot of info, but I have been fighting with this since day one, and I feel like I finally have some comfort!!! Contact me with any questions.

First of all, my sons eczema totally cleared up when we got his allergies under control with zyrtec. I suggest asking the pedi about some allergy medicine, she could be suffering from allergies even with no other outward symptoms such as runny nose or itchy eyes.

Secondly, we were instructed to give my son a bath no more than every other day with plain water ONLY. It sounds strange, but it gets them clean and you can make them smell fresh when you thickly apply lotion after the bath. My son used aquaphor oe cetaphil lotion which I mixed with baby lotion to make him smell fresh.

Also try using dye/perfume free laundry soap and avoid picking her up while wearing perfume.

We treat our son's from the inside out. We give him a liquid anti-oxidant supplement and aloe vera juice. I use berry flavored and he drinks it as a juice. I still use Aveeno lotion after the bath and "free" laundry detergent but he hasn't had a flare up in over a year.

I have Excema and so do both my children. I find that the soap makes the difference for us because so many soaps dry out our skin. We use a bath gel that is based with olive oil and it is very soothing. We use the Olive Branch from Lush, but its made all the difference in the world.
