Excessive Spit-Up - Rancho Palos Verdes,CA

My almost 7 month old always spits up, a lot. Since she was a newborn she would spit up, a lot. It didn't bother me before because it's normal with newborns, but now she's almost 7 months and I specifically remember my first daughter's spitting up subsiding by the time she was about 3 or 4 months old. Also, now that she's starting to eat solid food, it more bothersome, as it looks more like vomit. It doesn't matter when she eats or what she eats, she'll spit up - sometimes immediately after eating, and sometimes hours later. Sometimes it's just a little bit, and sometimes it looks like half of what she ate came out. It doesn't seem to bother her, she seems happy and healthy otherwise.

I'm planning on discussing this with her pediatrician at her next check-up but thought I'd check to see if this is common and whether I'm over worrying about it, or if there is something I can do to help her.

Thanks!

My baby spit up a lot too and my pediatrian said it was normal, as there are certain muscles that just aren't developed yet to help keep their milk down. Unless/until they're sitting up those muscles get stronger. Also, it's only reflux if they're spitting up WHILE they're eating. Hope that helps.

Certainly follow up with your pediatrician as it could be something medical. Our son was terrible about spitting up. We went through so many burp rags and bibs every day. Our pediatrician kept an eye on the situation but encouraged us to wait as he thought it would resolve on its own. Our son stopped spitting up around 9 months when he started walking. It was literally different from one day to the next like flipping a switch. Like your daughter our son was never bothered by spitting up and it never did smell like vomit. It could be something or it could be nothing so don't necessarily worry. Good luck and best wishes.

If she's growing well and is not in discomfort, I wouldn't worry too much.

My daughter was the same way. Didn't matter what formula I used, what type of bottle or nipple, how much she burped - she was going to spit up no matter what. Now this was over 30 years ago, so things may have changed, but her pedi told me not to worry about it as long as she was gaining weight, which she was. She did, of course, eventually grow out of i, but what a hassle. My child NEVER had a clean shirt or bib because she just constantly spit up and I just could not change her clothes that many times per day.

I remember one time I was sitting down burping her on my shoulder. She burped so I moved her so I could see her face to see if she had spit up and needed to be cleaned up and no sooner did I do that, she spit up A LOT right in my face! YUK!!!!!

Your LO will outgrow it - I know what a pain it is!

Unfortunately sometimes there's nothing you can do about it - my son projectilve vomited for the first 2 years of his life! I used to do a load of laundry of only his clothes, bibs etc every day!

That said, I did take him for a "barium meal" (they give baby a concoction which can be seen on x-ray and monitor if it passes through the disgestive system ok) when he was a couple of months old. They found that the little valve at the top of his stomach didn't close properly and he had an "overactive gag reflex". In my son's case nothing we tried worked. He did outgrow it.

That was the bad news. The good news is that my son is now 19 years old fully fit and healthy and hardly ever vomits any more! Hang it there .... this too shall pass!

Spitting up a lot isn't normal for ANY baby. Some spitting up is normal, but not a lot. It usually subsides when a baby can sit up on their own and they're not laying down so much, and they're digestive systems begin to mature better.

I wouldn't wait for her next check up, but I would call your pediatrician to request that they refer you to a local pediatric gastroenterologist.

She may be allergic to milk or she may have reflux is what I would think. I did that a lot as a baby is what I was told. They discovered later I was allergic to milk and as an adult I was diagnosed with reflux so either is possible. I would go ahead and call her dr and not wait cause if something can be done the sooner the better.

Good luck and God Bless!

I am sure it is nothing to worry about, but PLEASE have your pediatrician check her stomach the next time you go in. This happened with my sister and her son and it ended up being much more serious that the pediatrician thought it was for several months before really looking into it.

I had the same experience as Alexis . My pediatrician told me that as long as my son was not in pain & growing well , reflux wasn't a concern. That usually when kids start walking , reflux stops. Like Alexis said, my son quit spitting immediately, upon walking. Unfortunately, he was a late walker but the lack of spit-up was as exciting as late milestone.

I would look into GERD or Acid Reflux.
