My 22 month old son is getting his gums cut so his front bottom 3 teeth will come in. When he was 15 months old he fell and lost one of his front bottom baby tooth. Now rest of his front bottom teeth are not coming in. So while he is getting tubes in his ears, the oral surgeon is going to cut his gums. Has anyone had this done to their child? What should I expect? I'm not worred about the tubes in the ears. I'm worried what he will expreience pain of the gums and mouth.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thank you for your responses. Let me just explain why he is getting his gums cut. the reason why his baby teeth aren't coming up is because scar tissue formed over the baby teeth, which is why the baby teeth aren't coming up. Hopefully by cutting the gums it will help the process along. the dr. said this should help. wish me luck!

Hi there,

it was actually an old Maori Tradition in New Zealand to cut the gums of all infants and usually it was done with a shell. I know it sounds terrible and I certainly wouldn't do it with my son but those kids turned out all fine. I think your doctor knows what he is doing and the first couple of days won't be so pleasant for your little one but then all should be well

Cheers

L.

I had my gums lanced when I was eight or so because my two upper front teeth wouldn't come in--my baby teeth had come out naturally...the permanent ones just wouldn't come through for more than a year.

The worst thing for me at that age was having a limited diet. I don't remember much pain after...and I haven't had to have many painful dental procedures since then so it does stand out.

Healthy gum tissue heals pretty quickly. He'll be uncomfortable for a day or so. Definitely a good idea, if you decide to do it, to do it while he is already asleep.

Our dentist has proposed doing this with my 13 year old - so that his adult teeth will come in. How did it all work out for your child? Did his teeth come in soon after the procedure?

I have never heard of that, and I would be hesitant having that done at that age. He might just be late with his tooth coming out. I hope someone with more experience is able to shed some light. What will happen if it scars over and causes his teeth never to come through. Just a thought.
