I saw that there was recently some discussion about IUDs, but I did not see any responses that addressed my specific questions: Has anyone used Mirena(TM) while breastfeeding? Did it reduce your milk supply?
the IUD doesn't interfere with breast feeding because it contains progesterone and not estrogen, which does interfere.

Hello. I am a mom of a 3 month old boy and I am currently using the Mirena IUD and I also breastfeed. My doctor told me that it would not interfer with my milk supply and boy was she right. Hope all goes well.

I got the Mirena about 8 weeks postpartum. My son is 5 months and exclusively breastfed. I have had NO problems with my supply. (Friends who are on the mini-pill _have_ experienced problems with supply, though.) My only complaint is that I've had it for a few months now and I still experience spotting. My doctor told me this is completely normal. It's just enough to be annoying -- I have to wear a pantiliner every day. Good luck!

I have the Mirena I got it at my 6 week post check up. I am breastfeeding my son who is 15 months. It had no effect on my milk supply. My son was 11 lbs 1 ounce when he was born, and I was still able to produce enough to fill my big boys tummy even with my IUD. I love my IUD simple, nothing to forget and working great!

I got the Mirena 8 weeks after delivering my second baby and noticed no decrease in milk supply. I successfully breastfed her for a full year with absolutely no problems.
I did notice spotting for several weeks afterwards. Now, I rarely even spot (maybe once every 2-3 months) and it only lasts for a couple of hours. I love never worrying about getting a period. Good luck!

I had my Mirena placed when my son was 3 months old and continued to breastfeed until he was almost 15 months. the Mirena seemed to have no effect on milk supply at all for me.
I had the Mirena placed when I was two months post-partum back in August. I exclusively breastfed my son until he was 6 months old and then we started solids. I'm still breastfeeding, no formula at all. I was really worried about my supply because I don't have an overabundant supply of milk, but things have been just fine. I love the Mirena! I had spotting for the first couple of months, and now every once in a while, but it's been great. I just wear a pantyliner everyday and that's enough.

I have the Mirena IUD and I also breastfeed. I did not notice any decrease in my supply of milk. I am actually very happy with the Mirena IUD.

L., I got the Mirena after I had my 3rd child, who is currently 7 months old and breastfed. I had the Mirena put in about 8 weeks post-partum. I have noticed absolutely no effect on my milk supply. As far as side effects, I did have spotting/bleeding for about 5 weeks after I had it put in. Since then, absolutely nothing, not even. I love it - it is the easiest form of birth control because you don't even have to think about it!
It did not interfere with my milk supply after #1, but two months after it was in, I started hurting, like being scratched everytime I coughed or went to the bathroom. then I coughed really hard and started bleeding, alot. I went to the ER ( middle of the night) and they took it out, and also said it is common to have it hurt and move about. It works for some people, my friend has had it for three years and no new children and no problems, but I just had no luck at all with it.
I breastfed my twin daughters, and had the mirena placed at 6 weeks postpartum. I felt like my milk supply might have dropped off a little bit, because the girls were very fussy for a few days after that appointment, and were asking to nurse much more frequently. However, we continued to nurse very well after that. I think now, knowing more about breastfeeding and babies, they might have been having a growth spurt, which will increase the frequency of feeding.
