Experiences--water Breaking AWAY from the Hospital

I am not actively worried, but figure it is fun to hear other people's stories about this. My membranes somewhat ruptured with my first child a few days past my due date (leaking mostly, not gushing) at home. It was not messy at all and they weren't even sure it had happened at first. No big deal. :)

With my second child, my water broke completely about an hour after I got home from church while my husband was at work. I was playing outside with my toddler. I was also not quite 37 weeks pregnant. THAT was disgusting and I am very thankful I was home.

Any embarrassing or memorable stories about that? Has anyone had that happen more than once? I never went into labor on my own, even though they had me wait at least 12 hours before inducing me both times, so I don't really expect to go into labor this time, but I really hoping not to have an early messy surprise at work some afternoon. Thanks in advance for sharing!

What can I do next?

Laughing so much at these comments. I had to be induced and nothing was happening except the worst pain ever and i waddled along to the bath to try and distract myself from the agony. Well, I then did the biggest sneeze ever, threw up and my waters broke all at the same time. My sister walked up to me and said "wow its like you have just exploded" NICE!!!! I had the last laugh though as I didn't have to clean up the mess. HAHAHAHAHA

My water broke waiting in line to buy windshield wipers at AutoZone! How embarrassing! Thankfully I was wearing corduroys, so I don't think that anyone in the store knew, even though it was quite a gush. In a very anticlimactic way I called my husband, grabbed a towel to sit on, drove to the train to pick him up from work and drove myself to the hospital.

My best advice - don't wear a dress. Good luck.

<laughing> Well... I was in the hospital. They thought they were going to send me home (water hadn't broken yet), but during the exam found me at 5.5 centimeters, and contractions every 2 minutes. At 8cm an hour and a half later they popped them. RELIEF. Hadn't felt that good in MONTHS. (Not a lot of room in there).

My girlfriend was totally paranoid about having them break in public, so for the last month she walked around with a backpack on carrying a towel, biohazard bag, and a spare skirt and shoes. When her water DID break (on an escalator... I've always wondered how big a mess *that* was to clean up?), turns out she didn't give a rip afterall. The backpack was still untouched when she got to the hospital.

I had been 'laboring' at home for awhile with contractions about 1-3 minutes apart and my water broke a little when I went to the toilet (along with a major bowel evacuation). I said, "Time to go!! NOOOOOWWW!" I was so organized, that I had put a towel in the car to sit on a few days prior to this, in case my water broke. : -) Right after we got in the car to leave, things REALLY picked up, then "POP!" a huge gusher and about 2 minutes later the pushing started (uncontrollable urge). The towel was right behind me on the floor of the backseat, but all I could do was sit in my big puddle in the front seat, hold onto the 'Oh $!&%' handle and say, "She's coming! Hurry up !!!" There was NO way I was letting go of that handle! She was born right after we got to the hospital (a VBAC!). Good luck with yours!

My last day of work was a friday, ending with the company christmas party. I had a c-section scheduled for the following monday because my baby hadn't turned around. I woke up in the middle of the night on friday, feeling weird, and when I went in the bathroom realized my water had broken and was leaking. I had trouble getting my husband to wake up and realize we needed to go to the hospital right away. I still had to have the c-section, but turned out to be when my baby was ready instead of by a schedule.

With my first child I woke up early in the morning thinking I had to go to the bathroom (again) and when I stood up from the bed there was a huge gush right on the bedroom carpet. I woke up my husband and said, "Either I just peed myself or my water just broke!" He still laughs about that one! And I am still thankful that I wasn't out in public when it happened!
My 2nd pregnancy was twins and a sceduled c-section so I didn't have to worry about the water breaking, but I am now expecting #4 in January and the thought has crossed my mind about my water breaking first. I will have to get back to you on any good stories. I hope I don't have any though! :)

With my first, my water breaking is what woke me up at 6:30 am on the Sunday he was born! I woke up with what felt like a fizzed-up soda bottle going off between my legs, and my husband said he hadn't seen me move that fast in 9 months! I got to the toilet, and he asked if I was peeing myself, and I said, "Definitely not -this is my water breaking!" I was 39 weeks. Of course when I called in to my OB's office, my LEAST favorite doctor was on call. She also asked me if I was sure I wasn't peeing, and I told her I was absolutely sure! They had to give me pitocin after I got to the hospital though because nothing else was happening -no dilation, contractions, effacement -nothing. He did arrive in 14 hours though!

**And yes, I put on giant pads to wear to the hospital AND put a thick bathroom towel under me on the seat, but it was all soaked when we arrived at the hospital. It seems like it's NEVER going to stop coming out!

I was in the shower getting ready to go out when pregnant with my first when I was like..hum..I wonder if you would know your water broke if you were in the shower. I said something to my husband when I got out even. Turns out it broke in the shower and kept gushing from there. I got dressed only to be soaked immediately. I had no pads in the house yet, I never wear them and was a couple weeks until my "due date" and my OB had convinved me that first time moms are "always late", (seriously! her exact words). I was going to go shopping that evening/next day for them figuring I was still a couple weeks out from having him. I put a towel on the car seat to go to the hospital.

With my first, my water broke at 34 weeks (after sex, with NO previous complications). It was one in the morning. I went to the bathroom to pee and WHOOSH!!! I called my hubby, who said "So what, you're peeing." I said "Oh no I'm not!" I had to put a was of toilet paper over the pee opening and let him hear the water STILL gushing into the toilet before he believed me! It took a whole slew of dish towlels in the undies and bath towels under my butt in the car to get to the hospital. Because it was my first, I was so embarrassed because I didn't know if semen could affect the PH strip they used to see if it was amniotic fluid and I had to tell them I had had sex just before. The nurse just laughed at me, and then of course, got serious very quickly when she realized I was in labor at 34 weeks.

You're right. This is a fun one! :)

My water broke when I was about 34.5 weeks. It broke at 6:55am at home. I was in bed sleeping but alone (hubby is an OTR truck driver). I actually had a great night sleep. I only woke up about a thousand times to pee, rather than two thousand times. But there I was, out cold and *BAM!* I felt like someone broke a waterballoon up in my Misses. I squeezed my legs together like I was gonna pee myself and waddled like a crazy bird to the toilet. I thought the baby kicked my bladder & I was gonna pee myself. As soon as I spread 'em to sit, GUSH! All over the place. I started labor within 10 minutes. 7.5 hours later, my baby girl arrived. Five & a half weeks early but happy and healthy. :)

My aunt, however, was at home cooking dinner for a bunch of family & friends. She walked to the formal dining room table holding the main entree & ended up with Niagara Falls on the floor in front of EVERYONE! LOL! I would have been mortified. LOL!

They broke my water at the hospital with my first baby. I had been in labor for hours and hours, 90% of it at home and things got rocking and rolling after that. Four pushes and she was out.
With my son, he was 2 days past my due date and because I had been so critically ill during my pregnancy, they said they wanted me at the hospital to induce me first thing in the morning. We went for dinner at my favorite restaurant (strangely enough I couldn't eat anything), my back hurt so bad I wanted to die. I told my husband to please take me home so I could make sure everything was ready for the hospital in the morning and let me lay down and try to rest. I knew I was going to have to be at the hospital at 6am and I'd have a baby the next day.
I tossed and turned. My back and legs ached so bad all night and my husband slept in the spare room because I just couldn't settle down and I was fussy.
At exactly 5am I felt a pop and a whoosh and rolled off the bed because there was a gush. I waddled to the bathroom and stood in the tub because fluid was just pouring out of me. I didn't want to startle my daughter and I was trying to be calm about things and not freak my husband out either.
He called the hospital and I stayed standing in the tub for a while until it seemed most of the liquid was done draining. I put a towel between my legs and we left for the hospital.
The strange thing for me was that I knew when I was in labor with my daughter and my water didn't break, but with my son, I didn't realize it. My back and my legs hurt, I never had pain in my belly and when my water broke, it was a surprise to say the least. I was expecting to be induced the next morning and I just thought I was miserable for being over due.
Labor is such a surprise every time and always so different. At least in my experience.

Best wishes!
