Hello Everyone, I am almost 16 weeks pregnant and just diagnosed with complete placenta previa. My dr. put me on pelvic rest but said bed rest not necessary unless I find that being up causes spotting/bleeding. I have been spotting off and on for a week but no serious bleeding. I am concerned about what could happend later in the pregnancy.....my third trimester. Does anyone have any experiences with the type of placenta previa that completely covers the cervical os. I have read that although the chance of it correcting itself are smaller since it is completely covering the cervical os that it could happen. Has anyone had complete placenta previa correct itself? Any experiences would be appreciated. THank you!!

Hi T., I had placenta previa with my son. His now ten years old. Of course it didn't correct itself. It was worrisome and we were ready to expect a premature baby. I can't tell you how excited I was when I went for the C-section and the baby was fine and healthy. I scheduled the c-section two weeks before the due date. The only thing wrong was his pointy ears and no eye brow. We thought his Mr.Spok from Star trek. Anyways, it is worrisome at the same time if you are happy with you Doctor and you trust your doctor then you start having faith it will be alright. I didn't mention that I was working till the week of the c-section. My work is sitting, didn't require a lot of moving or walking. I hope this is helpful.

I had complete placenta previa. Mine corrected itself near the end, and I was able to deliver vaginally, at 39 weeks. I never had spotting or bleeding. As far as the last trimester, I was never on bed rest, but I had MANY restrictions, such as no stairs, no vacuuming, no sweeping, no exercise, no sex, etc. In addition to all the no-nos, I was only allowed to be on my feet a certain amount of the day, so I was unable to continue working. My family called it couch rest... I was unable to always be up and around, but I was not restricted to the bed.
I remember my doctor explaining to me that this road is different for everyone. Some people have no spotting and no bed rest. Others have bed rest for many months. And although they told me in the beginning that my placenta previa would most likely not correct itself, that is was possible. And, it did! :)
Feel free to contact me directly if you have any other questions along the way, or if you just want to talk about it.

I had placentia previa, and it corrected itself at about 20 weeks or so. You just need to take it easy, but don't worry, everything should be okay. It is not usually something that is serious, unless some type of trauma happens with your body. So don't exercise, and try to keep off your feet as much as you can, I am sure you will be okay!

I'd talk with more people and get more information and opinions (for example midwives). No personal experience but yes I have heard that even complete previas usually migrate out of the way during pregnancy. It doesn't seem like bed rest would be a good idea, as exercise is so important to a healthy pregnancy. You could also do some visualization, appreciating the placenta for covering the opening now, while visualizing it slowly moving up as the pregnancy progresses. And really tune into your own body, listening to its messages, to monitor your activity.

I had a complete placenta previa at 20 weeks with my first born. At 28 weeks it had moved to a partial previa, and in the late 30 weeks (can't remember which), it had moved out of the way completely, allowing me to labor and try for a vaginal birth. Unfortunately my son was malpositioned, so after 21 hours of labor and 2 of pushing, we went in for a c-section. I was not put on bed rest either (although I wanted the break!), but was not allowed to have sex. Good luck!

Yes. There is always the possibility that it will correct itself, but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't. I had placenta previa (that did not correct itself) along with a couple of other odd placental issues. Because of the previa, I could not exercise, have sex, or travel far from home during the third trimester. Basically, you need to avoid activities that could contribute to preterm labor. Up until the third trimester, however, I could do normal activities. Because I have a relatively sedate job (and I am obstinate), bed rest was never seriously considered. Your doctor will likely take a lot into consideration before coming up with a reasonable plan that works both for your sanity and for getting the little one to stay put for the duration. For me, my attitude and my sedate job were major factors. That said, I did not have spotting, which might have changed the equation a bit. And, I had a c-section at 37 weeks to ensure that I did not go into labor, which could have been dangerous for both me and the baby. In short, previa can be risky, but these days the tools for tracking (i.e., frequent ultrasounds) and preventing major problems are great. And unlike some other advice I saw, if your doc says no exercise, don't second-guess them. It's not worth it.
Good luck. I hope it corrects, but please don't worry too much if it doesn't.

Hi T.

I had placenta previa with my first pregnancy and I know it is kind of scary. My doctor didn't put me on bed rest either. He just said no heavy lifting, no sex and to get plenty of rest. I had seven ultrasounds by the time my pregnancy was over. Part from the placenta previa and part because I had gestational diabetes. All of my ultrasounds should it being completly covered until my last ultrasound. The doctor said he couldn't see it anymore but didn't know how far it had moved. He told me it was up to me. He said that if I had any bleeding than I would have to get a c-section but everything went good and I was able to have my son naturally. So it can happen. Just take care of your self and get plenty of rest.

M.
