Hello all your momma's out there. I am reaching out again for my 20 month old daughter Christyan. Crissy is hispanic and asian mix and has inherited her father's dry skin I believe. I rub her down every evening with baby lotion, add baby oil to the water, and then in the afternoon I rub lotion on her again. Still her skin literally feels like sandpaper. It feels like that all over her body. Her dad has really dry skin which he scratches so much he has scares all over his body but his skin is dry and does not feel like sandpaper. What do I do? Is this normal? Should I call the doctor to recommend her to a derm? Seeking help for my daughter to rehydrate her skin to feel like a baby's bottom. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

My dd is also 1/2 Asian- she has dry patches that feel like sandpaper also. I called the pedi & he recommended that I cut down on baths- every 2-3 days and use CeraVe cream. I got it at CVS, I think they have it at Walgreens, also. It has started to work.

My daughter had dry skin as well. I used CeraVe(recommended by the pediatrician) for some time and then I started using regular Vaseline after baths while her skin was still damp to help retain the moisture. I'm still using the Vaseline and her skin is no longer dry, flaky and itchy.

I was told to cut down on her baths too, but I did that only for a short time and went back to my normal baths. Don't dry her off completely after the baths and apply the CeraVe or the Vaseline.

Just like many of the other posters said...we were advised to do baths less often. My son was a baby a long time ago but his pediatrician advised using basis soap. We also got eucerin creme to put on him. It does finally get a bit better. Of course you need to make sure she is drinking enough water, this will also help hydrate her skin some.

Do not use Johnsons Baby products...they are not good for your skin. We had tons of problems with them to the point that even MY hands had small first degree burns on them...no joke.

As with the other moms said look at the ingredients and do not use any lotion or soaps including shampoo/condition with alcohol in it either. I'd also stay away from sulfates, parabens and anything with fragrance. All these cause irriation to the skin and can only make it worse for her. California Baby sold at Target has products that are free of all these ingredients. http://www.californiababy.com/

I'm also a fan of the Jason products for kid shampoo and conditioners which are free of all those ingredients as well.

I'd also go to a health food store and ask what natural things tehy recommend such as supplementing with omega 3 (fatty acids). They can't hurt only help.

Hello Jessica,

make sure you're not using lotions/shampoo/conditioner that have alcohol in them. that will make her dry skin worse. I recommend you increase her omega-3 and vitamin D consumption. does she have any food allergies? or ragweed allergy? soy allergy? gluten sensitivity? I know, I'm giving you more questions than answers. but it's worth checking it out. good luck! ~C.~

My daughter has extremely dry skin this time of year. It gets red and flaky, and really bothers her. We do oatmeal baths and baby aveeno body wash. After her bath I rub a little aquaphor all over her, especially on her face, hands and other really dry spots, then put aveeno lotion on over that. It has helped so much. Our pediatrician also said that if there are spots that are really rough and won't clear up to put a cortizone cream on them.

I just started using Lubriderm for very dry skin. My elbows felt like sandpaper too. They have totally healed and now I only use it a couple times a week. I have the one with the aqua cap. It smells fresh too.

You might try Aquaphor ointment. It is a little greasy, but I put it on my girls after bath under their PJs and let it soak it overnight. It works wonders. I like the baby Aquaphor vs. the regular Aquaphor b/c it is less greasy and more creamy. It is also cheaper if you go ahead and buy the tub vs. the little tube.

You may want to try Aveeno lotion instead of baby lotion, this has worked very well for my daughter's dry skin.

My girls are half Asain also and have very, very dry skin. Early on, I stopped using "baby" lotions and started using what I use. I put Kiehl's on them and it works great.
