Facial Skin Care

Past 4 years I haven't had enough time to take care of my body/skin ... but recently I am motivated to fix that ... there are so many facial skin care products in the market, it is very confusing. I want to know which products have worked best for you and what skin care regimen do you find most convenient? I am in my thirties and have patchy skin (part oily, part dry) and I do not smoke.

I am looking for advise regarding products & brands .... when is toner necessary? is it necessary at all? what SPF is healthy and neccessary? should I use a cream cleanser or a gel cleanser? which brands are best? how would you rate elemis, dermalogica, arbonne, etc .... are there other popular/effective brands? is it okay to mix & match brands & products? Also, are there any homemade recipes for skin care that work for you? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ladies, thank you for your suggestions. I tried a few products and bought: Elemis skin buff (exfoliator) really wow!!, Dermalogica essential cleaning solution (creamy cleanser), Elizabeth Arden's perpetual moisture 24 cream (moisturizer), Neutrogena's Age shield with helioplex spf90 (sunblock). I've used some for only a couple of weeks, but can already notice a younger looking skin.
Also bought Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour cream (for days when skin feels extra dry), Elizabeth Arden's Visible Difference creme, Elizabeth Arden's Ceramide Moisture Capsules & Night Cream, and Dermalogica skin refining masque.

S.,
Hello. I know I'm really late to respond here. I think you have to find what works for you and if you have found that, then great. I know I have discovered oil free products work the best for me - Biore makes a great oil free line (can get at target or walmart). I have used so many different brands, but find that Biore cleaner, daily scrub and toner work the best for me and then I use Avon's ANEW self adjusting lotion. Since I have sensitive skin, I use a cleanser/scrub at night with lotion and in the morning I use a toner/astringent and lotion. Two easy steps twice a day. I have found my skin works better mixing products/brand. Although most consultants of any beauty brand will say not too mix brands, you just have to find the right mix for you. Just wanted share about the oil free products. Best of luck.

Hi S.,

I use Nicole Miller skin care and cosmetics. Her products are filled with peptides, vitamins, and plant botanicals. I noticed a difference the very next day after switching from another brand. My skin felt tighter and more toned. At age 43, that was very important to me. Her products are manufactured and sold exclusively through a private international wellness company. Membership is $1.00 until the end of June! As preferred customers we get 30 to 40% discounts! Message me if you are interested in hearing more.

My dermatologist tells his patients to use Promise facial cleanser and moisturizer. You can buy it at Wal Mart. Don't spend all that money on other stuff. If you are going to spend a lot, pay for a dermatologist appointment instead, and get a prescription retenoid (sp?) to help with getting rid of dead skin. It will keep your face clear. My insurance pays for mine. I have used Mary Kay, Arbone, Avon and Clinique and it was all more expensive than necessary. If you really want to spend money, then Comsumer Reports rated the Olay regenerist line very high, and you can buy it at Wal Mart. I can't use it though b/c it makes me break out. If you do go the dermatologist route then beware..many of them are now trying to sell VERY expensive skin care out of their offices. But the most important thing you can do for your skin is wear sunscreen everyday! Get one made for faces. I like blue lizard for babies and it doesn't break my face out. I get tat at CVS. Also, I like cetaphyl with spf 15 or 50 b/c it has moisturizer in it. I get tat at Wal Mart.

I am 29 and have done lots of reserch over the last couple of years and tried things from Wal-Mart up to Lancome at the department stores and Arbonne. I REALLY made it important when I got pregnant last year and my skin exploded in the first trimester. Here is what I learned that still works today:
-cleanser isn't something to spend a lot of money on, go with something economical that matches your skin type.
-the best moisturizer I bought that works is Mary Kay, which I do not sell. They have different types and I have very oily skin and they actually have one that keeps me from looking shiny even better than the $36 Lancome moisturizer for oily skin I bought.
-Use mineral powder, whatever brand you like after trying diffent ones. Mineral powder works as a foundation and powder is MUCH better for your skin, looks natural too.
-use lotion on your skin/body that does NOT contain mineral oil. It is bad for your skin and does not absorb. Bath and Body Works almost all have it, Wal-Mart brands like Aveeno and Curel do not have it and are great for your skin/body.
-toner is good if you have large pores, they help minimize the appearance but that's really it.
-drink water and don't sleep in your makeup.
-exfoliate at least once a week.
Great skin is on the way!!

I recommend Mary Kay. I used Clinique for years, and then I tried MK. We have a 3 in 1 cleanser, day solution with SPF 25, night solution (I call it face lift in a bottle=), and age-fighting moisturizer. We have 5 types of foundation, with one for you! Well it's great to hear that you have decided to take care of your skin, so many women don't and it does show after many years. I have been wearing Mary Kay for 12 years and currently sell it now. I have pretty sensitive skin and it's one of the few products that didn't break me out. If you have normal/dry skin I would recomend the Timewise Normal/Dry formula. Moisturizer is a MUST, it not only keeps the elasticity in your skin to prevent wrinkles but it also protects your skin from free radicals. We sell facial sunscreen by itself or in a moisturizer which is quite handy. Most people I know that have patchy skin like yourself don't use a toner, that would just dry your skin out and it really isn't a necessity.
My website is www.marykay.com/jcornette

Hope this helps,
J.

hi and I dont know if this will help but I work with a company from home that has great skin care products. Now a days you have to be careful because the products out their are using cheap ingredients that cause bad reactions especially if you have allergies or asthma. A lot of those ingredients will cause cancer. The company I work for is 100% guar. and its cheapier when you become a mamber and membership till end of this month is one time fee of just one $1 and $12. to renew every year after. They dont put any harsh chemicals in their products everything they use comes right from our natural environment. Better then loreal, maybeline, and estee lauder, or clinque but its much cheapier. If your interested in more info Pm me or go to my website at www.internetceomoms.com/kkortright

Hi S.. I just recently started using a skin care line that I like. I'm alos 30-something with oily skin. It's called Skinlogic by Beauti Control. I was introduced to the products at a Spa Party. We had fun while learning about our skin. Not sure if you're in the Little Rock area, but here's the name, number and e-mail address of the lady that conducted the spa. She's a blast! Girl, I know what you mean about falling off of the wagon of taking care of yourself!

I have fallen in love with DHC products - the parent company is in Japan, but in the U.S. they're based in San Francisco. It usually takes about 3 days to get a shipment (they use FedEx). They use natural products and my skin has never looked better. I used to use Mary Kay, which I liked (and sold), but after a while my skin started getting flaky and stuff. Once I switched to DHC I haven't had any more issues. Their website is dhc dot com.

I do use toner, which I like. I wouldn't say it's something that everyone "HAS" to use, though. It may be more of a personal preference for me.

As far as SPF's, they say that a 30 SPF is great. Also, info for everyone: I read something in the last month that said that everyone of EVERY skin hue should use suncreen! Even those with darker pigmentation (and therefore the most melanin/protection) only have the equivalent of maybe 13SPF, and that those people still are succeptible to skin damage and melanoma from sun exposure.

Hi S.,
I'm also in my 30's & have combination skin. I've always had luck w/ fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products for "sensitive skin." This includes drug store finds like Cetaphil, Aveeno, & Purpose - all dermotologist recommended. And you can find them in cleansers as well as moisturizers with or without spf.
After cleansing your face, it's good to use a mild toner like Witchhazel (cheap, natural, & effective), followed by moisturizer.
It's easy to be overwhelmed by the cosmetic industry! My Grandmother taught me to keep it simple - the fewer the ingredients, the better.
A homemade mask for acne-prone skin:
(sounds gross but works) - twice/week until results (then less often) smoothe raw egg yolk on the face & jawline. Leave on for 15 minutes & wash. Afterwards, apply either a light, oil free moisturizer or make your own deep treatment w/ smashed avocado & 2 tbs honey- Leave on for 10 min. & wash off.
P.S. If concerned about raw egg, remember that Salmonella can only be on the Outside of the egg (shell) unless the egg has cracked.

I don't know about these other brands, but don't go with Arbonne. They're a pseudo-natural company.

To determine the safety of any body care products, you can look them up online at http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php?nothanks=1

Or if you want to look up a body care product type ("facial soap," facial moisturizer," etc.), you can do that there, too.

Have fun!

I love Nicole Miller's product line. It works great, is eviromentaly friendly, and is less expensive than comparable product lines. I use her make-up, nail polish, and skin care regamine.

Which ever product line you choose you should use all the reccomended steps in the process it is necessary for the best results...including the toner and moisturizer. Also if you can find a product line that is all inclusive, meaning skin care and make-up you eliminate the risk of bad reactions between opposing chemicals. This is especially important if you are going to go with a convention product that is not organic, all natural, and enviromentaly friendly.
A very common example of this is some products contain formaldahyde, if you then apply a product with a formaldahyde releaser like quanterium 14, you are then allowing the formaldahyde to enter your system through you skin. This is bad because formaldehyde increases your risk of developing cancer as well as causing extreme irratation in the upper respitory system.

Never use any thing with less than spf 15, but the more the better up to spf 60, any thing higher is not possible.

I use the cleanser in the shower and when i brush my teeth at night, I have two bottles for my conveniec, one I keep next to the toothpaste, then the toner and moisterizer is in my bedside table with my vitamins, that way I will still use them even when I don't think about it until after I'm in bed and don't wan't to get out of bed again. I also have cotton balls in the table to use for the toner, and we have a garbage can near by that I can also throw the cotton balls away from the bed.

You should keep your make up and cleansers stored where kids and dogs can't get to it, so if you choose convetional products don't keep it in your side table.

You have to order nicole miller through Melaleuca, they have a money back gaurntee on the mebership (120 days), and thier products (60 days) so if you want to try them out they are a very safe bet financialy. If you want to try let me know and I'll get you started.

I am partial to Arbonne because I have seen so many wonderful results and also I do have to confess that I sell it and have for over 5 years. I do the whole re9 anti-aging system with 7 steps. It is made paraben free, 100% botanically based with herbs. It has 9 key anti-aging ingredients one of those being Vitamin C which is crucial to repairing, reversing and correcting the aging process. I will be 46 in July and only look around 37. The day cream does have Spf in it. The toner is important because it removes the rest of your makeup and balances the skin. You do get a wash, toner, face lift, facial serum, day cream eye cream and night cream. It only takes about 2 minutes to apply. The whole system lasts for about 6 months and you can get a discount card and pay alot less. If you want to know more feel free to email me at ____@____.com

First of all...getting harsh chemicals out of your every day products is key! Your skin touches sheets, clothes, hands...etc. Then finding a company with a lot of research behind the products and not just hype. Check out the online store I use. www.switchingstores.com/heatherc

I am a Vice President with Arbonne, so I am partial to our products. The reason I became involved with Arbonne is that I had used Lancome, Clinque, Elemis, Chanel, etc - I have spent 10's of thousands on products and NEVER GOT RESULTS. When I began to use Arbonne, results were seen overnight. Truly overnight! What sets this product apart from the rest? Their promise of pure, safe, beneficial products with no chemicals, dyes, perfumes, alcohols, mineral oil and gurantee results or your money is returned. What is amazing, the products put your hair, body, skin into PH Balance so your skin is fed and it begins to work for you instead of against you. I am asking you allow me to send you some samples or you get you a discount membership card to our company and should you not be satisfied your money is returned. I can chat with you by phone or computer and determine what products you should experience.
Just let me know your thoughts.
