Family Adventure Vacations

I am looking to book some kind of "adventure" vacation for me, my 17 year old daughter and 12 year old son. Needs to be not outrageously expensive and in the US. If I could find something within a 2 day drive from Dallas, TX that would be great, but flying is not out of the question if cost is reasonable. One thought is Big Bend...

Anyone out there been on an Adventure Vacation or have suggestions, know of resources to research? Probably looking at Spring Break 2012 (March) or June 2012.

Although you said US, I love Coasta Rica and there are tons of things to do. When I was down there, we white water rafted, sat in the hot springs at the bottom of a volcano, road horseback through the rainforest, snorkeled in clear blue water, and took a sunset cruise on a ship made out of concrete. It was amazing. They have tons of things to do since they rely on eco-tourism. The canopy tour looked like a blast, but I forgot my jeans to be able to wear a harness without chaffing.

Most resorts are all inclusive and it was very affordable!

For two days travel by car will reach anywhere in the lower 48.

I've seen several wagon train adventures advertised in Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. You and several families travel by wagon train. No TV, No Wii, No electricity. All the food is cooked over a campfire or in a chuck wagon. You go with the bears in the woods, so to speak.

You can book a white water trip, although Spring break might be too cold because of snow melt making the water too cold to enjoy.

Go to Barnes and Nobel and lok in the back of travel magazines, like "Budget Travel." You'll get all kinds of ideas.

Good luck to you and yours.

I do agree with Costa Rica if you change your mind and go out of the US.

To stay in the US, I'd go to Park City in June 2012. Park City in summer is AMAZING!! There is so much to do - Alpine slides, zip lines, mountain biking, hiking, hot air ballooning, swimming/boating on a lake, outdoor concerts. And its breathtaking views.... I stayed in the New Park Hotel in July of 2009 and it was the most amazing hotel. So close to all and only about $120 (negotiate - since it's not ski season) per night for an amazing room with hot tub on the deck facing the mtns. Go check it out.

I loved rafting in Colorado with my kids! Colorado has something for everyone. We even went on a zipline-they're still talking about that one! Good luck!
