Febrile Seizure

My 1 yr old daughter recently had a febrile seizure one week ago. It was due to a very fast HIGH fever. When the EMT got there she was at 104.6. Of course you could imagine my dispair as my little girl was taken to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a Viral infection so no antibiotics could be given. Luckily the Febrile seizure did not cause any damage that we know of. We will be taking her to a Neurologist just to cover all basis according to doc. Since Sunday (now a week later) she has had reoccuring fever between 101-103F*. She seems to be getting better then all of a sudden the fever spikes to 103 and then to the shower we go to cool her off. My concern is, Why would she have a reoccuring fever for sooo long. The pediatrician told us that she must have a strong viral infection and her body needs to fight it on her own. I also have been told by the doc that I need to give her Motrin and Tylenol (every 4 hours). Seems like when the 4 hours peek her fever starts back up. He said that I have to be aggresive with the fever since she already had a seizure. Her Doc also mentioned that it may also be related to her teething (which surprized me since most docs won't admit that). I was wondering if anyone has experience something similar and what was their experience. How long is she going to be sick for? It is so frustrating and so upsetting. Now I am a nervous RECk b/c I fear the seizure. Any advice would help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So far I Sabrina is feeling better. A friend of mine gave me the idea to give her some Echinacea supplement for children. Also, I control the fever when it spikes to 102 with a nice luke warm bath. Her poopy seems better and she is eating well. Her upper cuspid teeth seem to be breaking thru finally. The four cuspids are next to each incisor. Cuspids have a pointed edge to tear food. Her premolars also seem like they are edging to come out. Don't know if this would cause the fever but it probably contributed to it all. I am taking her to a Neurologist for a consult to see it he needs to do a catscan just to cover all basis. I am also taking her to a chiropracter for an adjustment which I HIGHLY recommend to any parent that has a sickly child. I also learned from the hospital that when you take a temperature thru the ear or under arm always add one degree and if rectally take off one degree. One last thing that I did as a percaution was take her off of ALL Dairy! My lactation consultant (BEST IN MIAMI ~ Faith Ploude at Mercy Hospital) She mentioned this big controversey with dairy and wheat products and Autism. Fact is, I don't think that too much of ANYTHING is good. And Ironically she began her firt viral infection "Roseola" right about when I started to give her more dairy. This has been such a nightmare and I really appreciate all of your support. It is so difficult when wrenches are thrown your way. And our children are so fragile and depend on us so much!!! It can be so overwhelming but it is like one of you said....God doesn't give us anything we can't handle. So a couple of anxiety attacks later (LOL) I have learned that the body of a child is like a flower and I am here to nourish her and protect her. Thank you again, I really am glad to be a part of such an incredible group of woman!

I’m really sorry, and know what you are going thru. It will be a good idea to have the doctor run some blood test. Also, sometimes children swallow things and can get a fever from it (ex. paper, toy, pennies). If I were you I would also ask the doctor to do a stomach x-ray. My cousin had a similar situation and her son had swallow 3 quarters, kept getting fever and the doctors said the same non-sense thing to wait a couple of day. Long story short they found out about it because the baby did not want to eat at all, and mentioned to his mommy that he did not want to eat any more (money). That is when my cousin rushed him to the hospital, they found the quarters in the middle of his throught and stomach. I don’t want to scar you but, we parents need to be more persistent with Doctors.

J.,

A friend of mine, her daughter thankfully did not experience seizures, sorry to hear that yours did. However, her daughter did experience fevers consistently for more than six months, she was then diagnosed with kidney refluxe and that was causing the high fevers and keeping her in the doctors office. You might want to ask the doctors about that possibility.

Good luck.

Hi J.,
I cannot imagine what you went through when your daughter had the seizure.
I do want to tell you, as far as the Motrin/Tylenol thing goes, keep on it. My DS had Roseola with a 104.3 temp and I set my alarm clock to be sure he got his meds, of course along with the tepid baths, etc...

I hope your baby is on the road to a speedy recovery!!

J., Im sorry about your baby, I know how frustrating can it be when they are sick and no one seems to tell you what`s going on.. Last year my little one, he is four, also had fever for about a week, as high as your daughter did, I did not know what to do, the Tylenol and Motrin was also what I was told, I took him to the hospital after the third day and they kept saying he was fighting the virus, to keep giving him the Tylenol, etc, but his fever would not go down. When I went back to the Doc, since nothing seemed to work, she decided to test him for Strep Throat, which she should have done in the beginning, and it came out positive, make sure she is tested, this causes high fever and sometimes even vomiting. I hope she feels better.

J.,
Having gone through this myself, I know how scary this must of been for you. In all the reserach I have done via the internet and talking with my doctor it suggests that febrile seizures are more common then we realize. Everything I have read suggests that they do not have any affect on the childs brain or other organs after the fact and that this is just the way our childs body reacts to a fever that spikes quickly.

My little one has had three in the first two years of his life, he is now 3. We are blessed that we have not seen one in a year or so. Although, I am diligent about giving him Motrin even at the slighest of fever. The last seizure he had he actually was able to tell me that he felt funny and needed me to pick him up.

The only suggestions that I have is to make sure that little one eats a wholesome diet, children's vitamin and to watch for those getting sick signs. (runny nose, pulling at the ears, etc). Should she have another seizure just remember to place her on her side on a carpeted floor and be sure nothing is in her mouth. Continue to talk to her during the seizure. The ER told me it was not necessary to call an ambulance but to just bring him in once his seizure was completed. I expalined to them that I would call the ambulance everytime and that the EMT's are better able to handle the situation then I and asked if they had ever tried to put a child in a car seat after a seizure.

I still worry about him having another seizure and keep a monitor in his room so that I may hear him, told his preschool teacher/school, family & friends, babysitter what to expect and do should it occur when I am not around. Our peditrician stated that the peek time is 8 months to five years. I hope some of this helps.

Hi J.,
How scarey! Recently, my 4 year old had a viral/bacterial infection that kept him at 104 for a whole week. Since he was on antiboitics, the doctor said let them run its course. Every time the tylenol/motrin wore off, he also spiked right up to 104 - very scarey! but it did break on the 7th day. the doctor said that as long as he is a bit active and eating some while on the tylenol/motrin, not to worry. but if the fever was down and he was still lathragic, then i was to bring him in. i had another experience when my now 3 yr old was 15 months: he woke up in the middle of the night w/a 104 and i took him to the er. they immediately gave him a suppository (they are quickly absorbed) his fever came down, they ran a bunch of labs and determined that it was teething. my ped disagreed but his fever never returned and he was fine. maybe ask your ped if the viral infection may have also created a bacterial infection that you may need antibiotics for. with such a high fever for so long it's best to cover all areas.
i hope this helps! keep praying, it really helps!!!
god bless you & your little girl,
T.

J.,

I feel your pain... My son is now 10 months old and he had two seizures in a week. The first one, his fever was only 102.5 and the second one his fever was 101.7. He to was sick and at the time of his first seizure he had an ear infection and was on medication. Anyways my point is its not how high the fever is that will cause the seizure but how fast your childs temperature rises. Also I just recently went to a Neurologist and my son is having an EEG Brain scan tommorrow to see if he may have a seizure disorder. Hopefully this is not the case for either of our children. How you can tell is the length of the seizure a normal febrile seizure my doctor said should be 2 mins. or less. I know when it happens it seems like very long time but if you see your daughter have another try to be aware of how long it lasts. In my son's case his second seizure was much too long in my doc's opinion to be just a febrile seizure but I still praying for the best. I never thought my son would never have another one when I left the hosptial the first time but days later he did. They are very scarey thing to deal with. The mortin needs to be given even though I hate gaving him so much. I am believer that God only gives us what we can handle, hang in there your daughter will be better soon.

Hi,Luckily my kids never spiked a fever that high. But they have had viral infections with a fever (up to 103) that has lasted 3-4 days. My doc told me to alternate Motrin w/ Tylenol, so that they can have one or the other every 3 hours to keep the fever down. What I've noticed is that Motrin is always faster acting to lower the fever and lasts much longer than Tylenol (my kids fevers will always spike back up too after 4 hours w/ tylenol). So let's say you give Tylenol at 3 pm. , you can give Motrin at 6 pm, Tylenol at 9 pm, etc...
Best wishes and hope she gets betteer soon.

J.,

when my son was about your daughter's age, he too went through about two months of a similar fever thing. he'd get a really high fever > 102 for a day or two & then back down for a few days. then, we'd start the cycle all over again. the highest his ever got was 105. thankfully, he never did have febrile seizures! i was fully expecting him to as they run in our family & because of the high fever. the doctor could never figure out what was wrong w/him & also attributed to it to a virus. as a parent, it is very frustrating, but hang in there! and remember, listen to your intuition! good luck!

Hi J., my name is E., and I am so sorry that happened to your little girl. I have a little boy who will be 3 this month and for the first year of his life I lived in the E.R. He always had very high fevers, they would start out very low grade and then spike to 104-105, I would rush him to the hospital and they would tell me the same thing viral and no antibotics just motrin and tylenol. His fevers would last weeks with very little breaks and there was nothing that they could do for me, so I was giving him his meds every 4 and 6 hours like clockwork because as soon I it would wear off the fever would spike. I did also buy those patches for the forehead to try and keep him comfortable and he did like them. I would also not let him get chills because that causes fevers to get higher, so a cool bath is good but don't let her get cold and shiver because it will go higher, that is what the nurse and the hospital told me. I did notice that once he was about a year and a half he has not had a fever so severe, and I also have a 6 year old daughter and I have never had a fever problem with her. Good luck with your little girl and I hope so gets better soon.

HHi J.,
My daughter is 2 yrs old now and I went through the exact same thing with my daughter when she was 13 months old. And all of a sudden my daughter had a fever and I gave her tylenol but I gave it to her too late because right after i gave her the medication she had the seizure. We took her to the hospital too and it was viural so I too could not do anything. Now once I see she has a slight fever like anything over 105.0 i give her tylenol and if after like an hour if it keeps getting higher I give her motrin. Thank god she only had it once, but i took her to get an MRI of the brain and neverything just to make sure everything was ok. It's hard for us moms to see our child go through that and no be able to do anything, but the child doesn't remember anything so thats good. well take care and I wish you the best

I just read your request today, and my daughter is now 19 months but went through a lot of viruses with high fevers. My doctor said the same about motrin/tylenol every 3 hours and it would last approximately 5 days. My daughter would get 104+ fevers. My doc says she's a "high fever kid.".

She would get these viruses about every 2-3 weeks, and it's frustrating that there is no medication for it besides the tylenol.

Hang in there...not to say my daughter won't get a virus again, but it seems she's out of that phase. And my daughter is a bit of a nightmare when she's not feeling well.

Good luck
