So What Happened?

We just returned from our 5day trip to Door County. we had a great time. The kids LOVED watching the sunset at Sunset Park, the goats on the roof at Al Johnsons, the ferry to Washington Island, the custard at Not Licked Yet, the beach at Penn. State Park, and the Fishboil!! I personally fell in love with the Hawaiian Shaved Ice at Malibu Moos. So that tells you a little about my sweet tooth!!! Thank you all for your great suggestions.

We absolutely love The Landings in Egg Harbor! We usually take family reunion trips there and have a blast. They are condos/timeshares that are rented out when not in use. Almost all of them have little journals in the room to let the owners know how enjoyed your stay, what you did, etc. It's fun just to read what everyone else did! Most weekends in the summer there are festivals of some kind some where in Door County - you can even visit the Door County Chamber of Commerce website to find out what is happening when you are there! Have fun!!!

It's a great place for kids!! The beach at Peninsula State park is wonderful & the park itself is great for kids. PC Junction is probably the most kid-friendly restaurant ever...it has a train theme (the train delivers lunch), a separate ice cream stand outside & a playground outside. There's a a working dairy, with tours for kids & a play area with a giant ice-cream cone shaped slide, just south of Egg Harbor. A ferry-ride to Wasington Island is fun for kids. And you have to stop at Wilson's in Efraim for ice cream! Have fun!

The state parks there are wonderful. There is also fun kids stuff like miniture golf. If you want to visit all the towns give yourself a solid 3 days. The east side is less "built" up where as Fish Creek has a lot more stores and too see. Depends if you want to do nature or not. The lighthouses are fun too.

As for staying, we have historically stayed in B&B's and have not been back since our son was born. Plenty of hotels and resorts that should be able to accomodate your family. Check out the visitor guide.

My family & I have been there several times, but I cannot offer ideas of where to stay as we have always camped, but there is a lot of info on doorcounty.com. You can also order a visitors guide from the website. I would suggest visiting Washington Island. It is a wonderful experience & the kids would probably love the ferry ride. As far as eating, I would definitely visit Al Johnson's. It is a swedish restaurant with goats on the grass roof. It is located in Sister Bay and while in Door County you should attend a fish boil, which is very fun & maybe pick some cherries & visit a winery.
Boy, I wish we were going back this summer.

C.,
We go every summer and stay for a week. We always find different things to do and I find that is a perfect amount of time. We stay at a huge house in Egg harbor with my parents and sister(and her kids). We go to Penn. state park and hike or bike, go to the beach and park they also have a golf course in the state park. There is also this great place called Plum Loco, which my kids(2,4) love. We have dinner at a fish boil one night and my husband and cousin take a 1/2 day fishing trip and bring back TONS of salmon. There are concerts in the park and a place that actually has live music performances in more of a theater type place. We go to a place where the kids pick out their own pottery and paint it (then the place fire's it and we go back the next day to pick it up) There are wonderful galerys for fine art/jewelry, mini golf and go-carts and a bowling alley. There are nice beaches that aren't a part of the state park, FYI the greenbay side is warmer water. Every weekend (just about, is some kind of festivel in one of the little towns. In Sister bay(I think) there is an old fashion museum where they have old time fire trucks (which my son loved, he could sit in the truck and ring the bell)
It all depends on what you all are interested in doing, but really there is something for everyone!
Have fun~

I spent my summers there growing up and I hope you have a great time. A couple fun things to do with little kids: Sisters Creek with the goats on the roof, driving through Peninsula State Park at dusk looking for deer, Cana Island to see the lighthouse, cave point (be ready to hold hands, but it's really cool). Fish Creek and Sisters Creek have more of the shopping. There are swim beaches all over the place. Also, there's a place called Birch Creek where they teach teens music (depending on when you're there it could be orchestra, jazz, etc) and lots of times they do concerts in the park during the day in different towns. You ought to look that up as well. If you're really ambitious, Washington Island is accessed by a fun ferry boat ride and then you can rent bikes/scooters/etc, to ride around the island and look around. I know there's lots more I'm forgetting, but those are the first ones that come to mind. We always stayed at a cottage on Kangaroo Lake that we rented and loved. I've also stayed in Bailey's Harbor at a small little motel, but otherwise don't know much about good places to stay. You'll need plenty of time to absorb the beauty of this place. You have to drive quite a way to get to each of the towns, so at least 5 days would be my suggestion. I hope you love it as much as I always did.

Given that it is not a short drive, I'd plan on 4-5 days, that way you'd have two-three whole days there. There are a bunch of fun, state parks. You can rent bikes, go swimming, etc.

Be sure to stop at Not Licked Yet in Fish Creek --yummy custard and frozen treats.

My grandma has been going up there every year for about 30 years. Mom and I have gone for several. You have to stop at the Door County Bakery! We also can't miss the Cookery in Fish Creek, the Shoreline in Gills Rock, and Ain't Licked Yet Custard. I will say some of the beaches have really gone down hill over the years I've been going. We always picnic at Penn. State Park. Cave point is amazing too. It's been years since we went over to Washington Island, but I remember taking a second ferry to Rock Island which was amazing. The smell of fresh thyme still takes me back there. The motel we always stayed in has turned in to condos, but the counrty house was very nice the one year.

C., I was in Door County WI about three years ago and I would not take the trip with such little children. We were two couples, my cousin and I shopped all day and the men sat outside on benches. Not much else to do but shop and eat. Luckily we chose a hotel with an indoor pool. I live in the Lake Geneva, WI area. There are many resorts this way that are dedicated to family fun. I brought my three girls up here when they were about your children's ages and they and the grandchildren still come. I have a condo for rent in one of the resorts if your interested.
