I've been working at an insurance company for 11yrs (8yrs part time -two 10hr shifts) There's been talk that our dept could possibly be laid off. Some people are trying to transfer out. In my situation I cannot afford to put my son in daycare more than two days a week and wanted to start this (for the 1st time-we've had a sitter 1 day wk until now) in Sept when my other two are in school. My boss sent me an email today saying if he loses people he will need me to come in DAILY a few hours each day (which is understandable) BUT I just sat with someone the other day (that my boss set up) for training on something that has NO DEADLINE. So what does it matter if I come in two days during the wk and 1 on the weekend. That's what I want to change schedule to when school starts and normally they are flexible. I feel my attitude coming out and want to quit but I'm not much of a risk taker. My husband and I could make it without my income but we would be seriously watching our expenses. On the other hand, they might lay us off and we'd get severance and unemployment. I know the smart thing is probably to stick it out but this email he sent me today really upset me. I CAN'T come back all 5 days during the week, can they force me to quit?? Sorry so long! Thanks for listening to me vent. Edit: I would still be only working 20hrs a week and paying daycare for 5 days. It would not be worth it to stay and he knows my situation we have already talked about it.

You need to have a face-to-face with your boss.
If he wants you full-time - that's a COMPLIMENT - not a forced resignation...that TO ME means he likes your work and knows you are dependable!
I have a face-to-face meeting with my boss and ask his plans and expectations...at that point you can make a decision...
I don't know why you CAN'T work full time - the money might be nice for your family- set the extra aside for bills that need to be paid or something... There are companies that make 'unreasonable' demands to force an employee to quit...so they won't have to pay severance or unemployment...you can check your state laws - right to work or with cause...
GOOD LUCK!!!
As a part time employee you probably won't be eligible for any kind of unemployment or severance pay. Those are usually full time employee benefits.
In my thoughts, you get fired you are out of luck.
Call your state labor board and ask them, They are the ones that make the law regarding employees in your state.
Here's my 2¢ -
You wrote "My boss sent me an email today saying *if* he loses people he will need me to come in DAILY a few hours each day (which is understandable)". I see the word "if" in this, so I take that to mean it's a non-issue unless he starts losing people. Who knows when/if that will happen; especially if you just started training on a project with no deadline.
I would wonder about severance/unemployment with a part-time job, too.
I am one who stresses about stuff like this too but I don't think it's good for you! And, for what it's worth I probably would have had the same reaction from reading the email, LOL! Would it make you feel better if you started watching your expenses a little more now (somewhere in between where you are now and what you'd have to do if you weren't working), just in case?
And, something else to consider, do you like what you're doing? Is this something you'd like to be doing full-time when all the kids are in school?
Good Luck!!!
