Hi Moms,

My son starting feeling under the weather on Saturday. Yesterday and today he has had a fever of between 101 and 102. When the tylenol or motrin kicks in, he is fine, playing and eating. He does seem very tired though. He went to bed very early tonight. I will call the doctor tomorrow but I was wondering what it could be. I am getting over a cold sore attack, could I have passed on the virus to him? He does not have any sores or anything like that, he looks normal. Sorry, he is 3 1/2. I asked if anything hurt and he said he was tired. He also told me that he was cold at the supermarket. He never says he is cold.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He lost his voice last night (still has no voice)...so there is another symptom. Anyway, I took him to the doctor and you ladies were right on the money. It's a virus, an upper respiratory infection. His throat is inflamed and he has mucus. If he is not improving in 2-3 days then we have to get an antibiotic since a virus should be getter better by then.

There is something going around. I've never known a cold sore (herpes simplex virus) to cause fever. I'm not a doctor though. You can talk to the doctor about it...especially if the fever has been going on for more than 3 days.

I hope it's nothing serious. I hope he's just fighting something!

GOOD LUCK!!

Does he have the fever all day, or does it spike in the evening and morning? I just spoke to my Dr abut this, my son gets these night fevers frequently too with no other symptoms other than being a little tired. Dr says it's pretty typical, just make sure he gets rest and fluid and keep the temp down.

Hi there!

Same thing happened with my son when he was a baby, toddler and even today as a six year old. He'll get unexplained fevers with no other symptoms. The ER physician told me it is a virus and the fever is the bodies way of getting rid of it. Quite normal as long as you can control the fever with tylenol or motrin. If the fever gets too high take him to the doctor or ER if it is after hours. I had to take my son into the ER when he got a fever above 103. He had a 104-105 fever one time and I was so scared. We rushed him to the ER in the middle of the night that night...and they were able to bring it down with IV fluids and motrin.
Yes you could have passed on a virus. Viruses are so easily passed on as there is no way everything can be germ free.
Hope you all get to feeling better. :-D

Hydrate and keep an eye on him, it's pretty normal stuff, he might be coming down with something, you'll end up seeing a rash or he'll barf and scatter for a day or two... protocol for little kids on weekends or when it's picture time or when it's time to visit someone.

My children have had viruses like that occasionally. I don't think you need to worry, but it's always good to call the doctor anyway. Sometimes they can tell you what has been going around and what other symptoms (if any) are likely to follow.
Hope your little guy feels better soon!! =o)

Well, if he's "feeling under the weather" and is tired...those are symptoms.

The tylenol/motrin masks the symptoms. He's fighting off some sort of viral infection.

Just continue the tylenol/motrin. Let it wear off occasionally to check to see if the fever has broken. If it doesn't break in a couple days, call the doctor.

My son used to get unexplained fevers all the time. It turns out he has an autoimmune issue, where his immune system is too active at times. For him this is bad because it attacks his joints. If your son is not complaining of joint pain and the fever goes away within a few days, I would not be overly worried about it.

My son had something similar a month ago and the pediatrician said it was going around. High fever for 3-5 days. Possible icky poops (yes scientific name for it :) or throwing up with no other symptoms. Very lethargic for a few days. Had me doing motrin and tylenol alternating. He got as high as 104-got me so scared! Definately bring him in for a check though. Poor kiddo. Hate seeing them like that!

Seems like probably just a little bug or something, maybe from you, maybe not. I'd keep giving him the meds on schedule and I'm sure he'll get over it within a few days. I'd probably call the doctor too but I'm sure they'll tell you something similar...mine always does! ;)

My pediatrician always talks about fevers like they are a good thing...BUT that if my kids ever have unexplained fevers for 3 days (meaning with no other symptoms), to call them asap. They want to see them.

Fever means illness or infection.

Tylenol or Motrin, does NOT 'cure' the illness/infection. It only TEMPORARILY provides help for the discomfort.
If the person is still ill... the fever will return.

Your child is also tired. He is ill.

Some illnesses, are only fever.
My kids have had that. They were sick. And the fever was present, in varying degrees, until they were no longer sick.

Or fever can be an indication of even a urinary infection.
Or of an illness coming on.

Watch him closely.
Take his temp often.
Keep him hydrated.
Have him sleep whenever need be. Sleep... helps the body to fight off things.

How old is your child?
Sometimes with fever, the child will have a headache also. But a young child cannot say exactly "I have a headache" if they are very young.
Or fever can also cause chills or them being very hot.

If the fever gets too high, take him to the ER or Doctor.
