Fevers in 8 Year Old Son

My 8 year old son has been having fevers for the past year that come every 2-3 weeks. Usually they only get to maybe 102.0 but this past Saturday his fever spiked to 104.1, I was able to get it to come down after some time with cool washcloths and tylenol/motrin. His pediatrician has had him do many blood tests and urine tests, everything is coming back normal except that he has high calcium in his urine.
I need an answer, I am losing my mind. His ped. just says 'well we will wait and see what happens'... how much longer can we wait?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took my son to back to the doctor today... but since he is feeling good today there is not much they could do. He is being sent to a specialist about the calcium in his urine, we will be going to see him in a few weeks. I asked the ped about allergies and he said that we could investigate that.

Thank you all so much for you responses!!

Check for allergies. My daughter would spike a fever everytime we went camping. It would go up to 104 within 24 hours of arriving at the campground. We always camp at the same place. We would come home right away and within 12 hours the fever would disappear. Since we brought all our own food the only thing we could figure out that was different was the water. As soon as we started bringing bottle water the fevers stopped. The only thing we could see is it is something in the water because it is pumped in from the lakes at the campground. Try keeping a food diary and see if you can find something that might be causing it.

Best of luck. I know it can be very frustrating.

Take your son to a chiropractor!!! If his immune system isn't working properly it could cause this reaction. It's non-invasive, inexpensive, and usually kids require little treatment to get well.

I don't know where you live, but you can email me for a referral, I know a lot of them. Good luck!

Just an FYI...My son has environmental allergies and last August had a week of unexplainable fevers and awful migraines. After 7 days of on and off fevers, jumping as high as 103, the dr. put him on an antibiotic and diagnosed him with a sinus infection. My son just didn't have any nasal symptoms and I really didn't even suspect a sinus infection. The antibiotic did kick it out and he is seasonally, on Claritin OTC.

The only other thing I am wondering about is you mention the "high calcium." Is he on any regular medications (potentially having complications from one) ? Or...has he ever had any kidney concerns? These are just the things that caught my attention when I checked the web...kidney concerns/potential kidney stones/potential adverse side effects from meds (tylenol?). I'm a mom and I cannot imagine "waiting and seeing what happens" ... Sounds like you've done enough of that over the year. Have you considered finding a DR. at, maybe U of Chicago Hosp., Children's Memorial, Rush? Even Mayo Clinic! Just seems like a long time for a child & family to have to endure these fevers without getting any definitive answers - I'm sure you've thought that too. I have a wonderful Pediatrician who is connected to Univ. of Chi but he is in Berwyn and that's a distance for you too. He's so wonderful because I believe, he goes the extra mile to find those answers that have stumped him. I hope you get some answers soon. If you need my Pediatrician's number just send me a private message. Prayers for your son and I will pray that you get some answers soon, too.

I agree with the posters who say to have him checked for allergies and sinus issues. I get terrible sinus infections, and usually the first symptom is the high fever. I don't get the stuffy nose, etc, until after the fever.

My daughter has been doing this for the last 1.5 years and she is only about to turn 2! It was so frustrating that we could not find anything wrong with her with all the blood tests, urine tests, CT Scan etc.... Finally I found out what the problem is.... allergies- Took a year to get this diagnosis!

When she is exposed to a trigger she will occasionally flush and then run a temp all the way to 104 and then come back down to normal within a day or two! Sometimes she would sit there and hold her head also for days and cry like she was in pain but not like a cold or the flu- if that makes sense! Several times she has also ended up in the ER with hypothermia because after the fever she would drop to 91 degrees and barely breathe. She was in anaphylactic shock. I could write a novel on what we have been through with this all! lol

My daughters triggers are unknown (she has Mastocytosis) so to avoid this and other systemic reactions including anaphylaxis we have been giving her daily doses of Zyrtec. She rarely gets the fever anymore- except today :) she no longer refluxes, no more severe pain, no headaches etc!

I would keep a diary if you do not want to do the Zyrtec and see if there is any common thing eatten, weather, activities, places you are at etc.

I hope you get to the bottom of this since it is soooooo frustrating as a Mom to not be able to do anything to help! Especially when we live in a world of information and you want answers!

Good luck and many blessings to you and your son!

My middle child did the same thing when she was between the ages of 2 thru 10 or so. She would run a fever for a day or two with no other symptoms. At the time our ped suggested a log to see if there was something triggering them. That turned out inconclusive as there were no patterns. Her final diagnosis was that she must have a great immune system. She's 15 now and do you know I think I can count on one hand how many times she's had a cold or the flu or any other illness and still have fingers left over. She rarely gets sick. I figure it's not such a bad thing!

Allergies. My son who is now almost 8 suffered from this. Unexplained fevers that would come and go. We used to call them ghost fevers. I finally did some investigating and found out he is allegic to cats. So bye bye cats. After that, presto..no more ghost fevers. He hasn't had a sinus infection or an ear infection in over three years. Seeing that I seemingly found the problem and removed it from the equation, he hasn't been on antibiotics in over two years!

I don't know if this helps at all, but my 6 year old gets fevers every time he is at my MIL house for more than a day or two. The fevers last a week. He always says he feels fine but, he wasn't able to go to school during the school year. We finally concluded after meeting with his allergist that it was likely his body fighting off mold and cigerette smoke. Does your son have asthma or allergies.. or has he been tested for allergies?

I think I would be seeking another doctor. This is your child and for your doctor to say "well we will want and see what happens" is totally uncalled for.
I would think your doctor would want him in the hospital during these times of high fevers so he would monitor him. I wish I could give you something to hang on to but the only times our son would get high fevers is when he had an ear infection. One time his fever got so high he had what is called a fevrall seizure (not sure of spelling), His fever reached almost 106 deg.. He went limp and unresponsive. It took less than 2 hours from normal to almost 106 deg., He went to bed normal and when I checked on him he was unresponsive. So please watch him closely. I can't tell anyone what to do but if it was me I would be getting another doctor option.
