My sister just found out she is pregnant. She does not have medical insurance. I heard there was an insurance for pregnant women through the state. Does anyone know about it here in Oklahoma City?

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
Maybe if she calls the State Dept. of Health they would know about it. Also, if she is any part Native American and has her card she can use the Indian Clinics. Good luck to her, and congratulations as well!

It is called sooner care. She needs to go to the department of human services to set up an appointment to apply. I believe the closest one is on route 66 almost to El Reno.

Yes. She can go to DHS and fill out a form for Soonercare. Once it's processed, she'll be assigned primary doctor, but she should be able to go to any OB doctor that she wants as long as they take Soonercare.

Hi J.! The insurance is called SoonerCare. It is for pregnat women and their children. You can call your local health department. I know in Oklahoma City, there is one on 10th and Rockwell. You fill out some paper work and then go through their book to find a doctor. I had insurance through my husbands company for the beginning of one of my pregnancies and then lost it for a while. We filed for Soonercare. I didn't even have to change doctors. My doctor (Dr. Joe Merritt) accepted it and then when I had insurance again, still was able to see me. Good luck. If you have any questions, please email me at: ____@____.com

It is called SoonerCare and it is funded by the department of human services here in Oklahoma. I am not sure if they will be able to cover her since she is already pregnant, but maybe they can help her. Just Google Soonercare. It pulls right up. D.

I was the same way with my first. You can go to county DHS office there are a few located in Oklahoma City. You or your sister can apply medicaid which will pay medical bills. I believe they base it on income. There is one located on 23rd street and Kelly, 50th and May kind of behind Walgreens and another located on 10th and just west of Rockwell. Hope this helps Good Luck and Congrats.

Yes you can get SoonerCare if she is below a certain income threshold. It covers you and the Baby. Tell her to sign up for WIC and she can also get a daycare subsidy when the baby comes and if she works.

she needs to contact DHS in her county, and apply for Medicaid. It covers Pregnant mothers through 6 weeks post-partum. But there are income guidelines.

She can go to any health department and get a free pregnancy test and ask them for a paper stating that she is pregnant. Then you call or go to your local DHS office. They can mail you an application for Medicaid, or you can go in and pick one up. You will need to send in the paper you got from the health department with your application. It can take a little while, but once approved (if approved, it is based upon income) her doctors appointments will either be free or aa dollar, and most if not all the hospital charges will be covered.

Go to a nearby health clinic. There are several through the state. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Variety Health clinic. Make an appointment and they have paperwork that you fill out in the office. You should know if you are accepted within weeks. They will go ahead and see her for free and then when she gets accepted everything will be covered. They should put her on prenatal vitamins and everything for no charge during her first visit.

She needs to call a DHS office and set up an appt with someone so that she can get soonercare. They will cover her and they should cover the baby when it is born as well. Hope this helped.

Everyone is right on, its called SoonerCare. Get a few things ready though, the things they may want from you might include pay stubs to verify income, a positive pregnancy test from a doctor (if you only have a home pregnancy test, you can get a free one at planned parenthood. Have her call ahead to find out what all she needs to bring with her and make sure she gets all the needed documents in to them. I know of several cases that they were originally approved, but the person did not follow through with the needed information or paperwork and they were dropped even before they delivered. So, help her get organized, and get her the appointment.
