First Period After Postpartum

Hello Ladies,
I am not sure if I got my period or not... I had my baby 2 months ago and my lochia ended about 2 weeks ago. Well, last Saturday I started bleeding again. Actually it was more like a bright red spotting (sorry, TMI) and it lasted only 2 days. I had very light period cramps. My periods used to be very heavy and the cramps were considerably painful. I have been breast feeding but not exclusively.
Did I get my period back or not? I'm so confused!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just want to thank everyone who took the time to drop me a line and make me feel better. This was my very first question here at this site and I wasn't expecting such wonderful response from so many nice ladies. Thank you so much, it is great to see that I am not alone in this new journey! :)

I had a similar experience with a mini period 2 weeks after the lochia stopped, but then did not get another until my baby was 9 months old. Just my 2 cents!

It sounds like it is your period. I have three kids. Even though I breastfed each one for 6 or 7 months, I still got my period a few weeks after the lochia ended--I was surprised because I assumed not having periods was a benefit of nursing. I will say that the periods I got when I was nursing were much lighter and shorter than my regular periods. The first period I got back after nursing was especially heavy, then everything seemed to go back to normal. Good luck with everything!

Although it is possible it is your period, it is also possible that it was just a jump back as your body continues to heal. Prior to the two days of bleeding did you do anything more steneous than normal? The first shopping trip or outing since your baby was born? Has the baby been more fussy and you have been packing him more than normal? Did do house work or yard work? I nursed (exclusively) with all three and my periods were gone until they were 4 months and had started cereal. But I spotted a few times after the postpartum bleeding had "stopped" when I was more active - trips to town were hard because I carried the baby (or older sibblings) more and that put a strain on my uterus. Just a thought.

my post partum bleeding was done by the time each girl was 10 days old (awesome dr. that cleaned me out after a C section so there wasn't as much left to shed). Unfortunately despite breastfeeding both girls I started periods when they were about 10 weeks old. Not fair in my book. My sister, same genetics, right?, would go up to 13 mos after birth before starting periods again. So, for some people that breastfeeding meaning no periods works, for others we aren't as lucky.

And your first periods after birth are more like you described.

Maybe, maybe not. Track your period and see what happens. It is very normal that after having baby your period changes. After my second I was super heavy. Now after my fourth I only have one day and the rest is very little. Before I had kids my cramps were bad then after a few they weren't so bad. Now I can feel ovulation more than the actually period cramps. You may have had a period but because you are nursing it may not come back at all until you are done.

A., nothing is normal now!!! They say any bleeding up to 42 days after birth is postpartum bleeding, but my experience has been that you can expect all kinds of weird bleeding. I had some abnormal bleeding after my first and all kind of it after my second (spotting every 2 weeks for months!) Don't worry about it and be ready for anything! If you are very uncomfortable or concerned, call your OB I'm sure she can ease your concerns or see you.
I have found that polling other moms works best b/c each story is different!

I also had my baby about 2 months ago ( end of August) and I got my first period a week ago. I had started weaning my son, so I was decreasing how much I was breastfeeding. My postpartum bleeding had stopped around the 5 week mark (with an occasional little bit of light spotting if I overdid something). I did talk to my doctor just to check and he said it was in a normal range. It never hurts to call your doctor and see what he/she thinks!

If you have any concerns I would call your OBGYN office and talk it over with a nurse who is a trained professional. That's what they are there for, everyone's pregnancy is different and they will be able to tell you what is normal and what isn't. Good luck!

I was unsure about when my period started too. I was breast feeding and I think the contractions from that may have been sending things down too. Sometimes if you've been over doing it during recovery you tend to bleed more.

It seems to me that I didn't really have a regular period until 6 months or so after the births of my sons. I remember thinking it was taking a really long time to return to normal. I breastfed each of them about 10 months, if that makes a difference.

Let your dr. know what's happening. He may say it's o.k. or that if it happens again, you may need a scraping (not as aweful as it sounds).

It could be a period but it sounds more like your body is telling you to take it easy. In the two months after labor, I would bleed on the days I would do too much and not take time to rest. Make sure your not lifting heavy things and get plenty of time to rest.

Did you, perhaps start taking birth control? I had quite a bit of spotting after starting the mini-pill.

Best,
