HI, I just found out I am pregnant last Saturday. I went to my OBGYN and she said accourding to my last period I should be about 5 weeks preggo. She did an internal autra sound and did not see the small area where the baby should be:( She sent me for a blood test today and then I have to go for another one on Saturday. She said if the blood levels on the test from today - Saturday do not go up something could be wrong. Has anyone had this same experance or know what might be going on? I am so scarred?

What can I do next?

J.,

There is a lot of good advice here. I particularly like Stacey's comment; if the baby is healthy your body will do everything to protect it, but if the pregnancy is abnormal, your body will try to stop it in a natural way. Try to trust your body and have patience.

I would only like to add that, while the stress of a new job shouldn't affect your pregnancy, stress can delay ovulation, and affect the age of the embryo. So, if you were stressed about starting a new job, it could mean that the baby is younger than predicted by your last period. (I skipped a whole cycle before conceiving my first because I was stressed about buying a new house; the baby was a whole month younger than predicted by LMP.)

Good luck.
C.

This happened with me as well however mine was a bit different as I was bleeding. Since you are only 5 weeks sometimes they can't see anything because usually the fetus is too small(with me they saw the sac but couldn't determine if anything was in there) which is why the first prenatal visit is usually around 8 weeks. Blood tests are good indicators of what is going on. I had to do several blood tests and what was hard was waiting for the results. I called my OB/GYN everyday! Finally, after agonizing over what was going to happen, they told me my hormone levels were rising the way they should. At the first official prenatal visit we got to see my daughter. I was so happy to see my "little grain of rice with a heartbeat". I hope that everything turns out for you. I know it is difficult but just take one day at a time! Good Luck!

J. please don't worry yourself until there is actually something to worry about. When I was pregnant with my 8 year old daughter I started spotting. When I went to the er I had an interanl ultrasound they could not see the baby. I was so afraid, but I went home and rested like the doc told me to, and later when I went back to the hospital they found the baby. They are so tiny in the early stages that it is possible that your doctor's ultrasound machine was not strong enough to pick up your precious bundle. Take care of yourself and your little one by not stressing and good luck with everything. P.

It's very common to miscarry or find out you just had a "chemical" pregnancy during the first 6-12 weeks. This is why I mentioned before, a lot of people don't even mention they are pregnant to their family and friends until they actually hear a heartbeat (when a miscarriage is less likely to happen.) By 5 weeks, you should be able to see a "yolk" and sac that the baby lives in. I hope she checked your tubes too, because it could be an eptopic pregnancy. The HcG levels have to go UP in order for the pregnancy to be viable. If she didn't see the sac at 5 weeks, there could be something wrong OR there is a miscalculation and you are just not as pregnant as they thought. I'm sure she will do another ultra sound if the levels go up. The stress of your new job would not effect the pregnancy. Just try to keep in mind that your body will have a natural way to stop an abnormal (not developing correctly) pregnancy and it will do everything in it's power to keep a pregnancy that is forming it should. The only thing you can do is patiently wait. The next blood test should just be in a few days or a week. The levels double every few days early on in a normal pregnancy. In the meantime, you can read about eptopic, mole and miscarriage, just to mentally prepare yourself either way. I hope it's just the case where you are less further along than they thought and they just can't see anything yet. That is possible if you ovulated later than expected. Good luck.

Dear J.,

this is not so much a piece of advice as it is a comment. Early today I just happened to read about your situation. And I thought the only way I relate to you is that I had my first prenatal apt. 2wks ago and I am currently 14wks pregnant. Then later today as I was shopping I got a call from my doctor's office saying that the dr. needs to see me right away regarding my blood test results!! I immediately panicked and broke down into tears. I am still in shock and my apt is 1st thing tommorrow morning. Things change so quickly, now I identify with what you are going through, where as before i didnt.

So I had a miscarriage in May, I had no idea, everything was fine, i went in and there was no heartbeat at 9 weeks. No idea why... But now I'm prego again and have had some spotting, so I too had blood work done last week tue and thurs. I was told levels looked good, but they wanted to do a sonogram and everything was ok , I'm at 7 weeks. But i was called on Monday and told my progesterene level was low and am now on progesterene to try to prevent from miscarring again. I hope everything goes well for you.

Hi J. - The first 6-8 weeks is a critical time in your pregnancy, so try to overwork or stress yourself too much. I have not had that experience before and I'm praying for a successful pregnancy for you. What I CAN help you with is making sure you have the healthiest pregnancy possible for you and your baby. Have you heard of Juice Plus? It's a supplement that every Pregnant woman should have to increase the odds of a successful pregnancy and healthy baby. It's 17 whole food fruits and vegetables in a capsule and is extremely effective in reducing pregnancy complications. I encourage you to listen to this doctor speak about the importance of fruits and vegetables during pregnancy. He will give you confidence that you can create the best environment for your child as he/she grows and beyond:

I heard a speaker recently who talked all about health and nutrition. I was blown away by the pregnancy study results. If I can get my hands on the chart she showed, I'll email it to you. Basically, it compared pregnant women that took nothing, pregnant women who took prenatal vitamins, and those who took both prenatal vitamins AND Juice Plus. When measuring the incident rate of several conditions (miscarriage, low birth weight, preclampsia and several others), the patients taking both prenatal vitamins and Juice Plus had none of these conditions and their babies were born healthier! So make sure you are taking both prenatals and Juice Plus daily.

Hi,
This is kinda scary... My doctor thought that I might have this too when I found out I was pregnant (I found out at three weeks... I know! I just had this feeling that I was), but 6 weeks later I was bleeding WAY scary!

The term is called Pseudocyesis, it's basically a false pregnancy. It's when your body thinks its prego but there is no fertilized egg attached.

Also, It could be that you are finding out before your body is... your baby could be hiding. Remember some gals go 6,8, even 12 weeks without figuring out they're prego... maybe you're figuring it out faster than you're body. Don't stress yet, wait for the blood test and talk with your doctor. It could just be all the changes i your life are going on at one time... it's could be a little overwhelming for the little fella.

Good luck.

I had the same situation when I was married to my first husband. I had a miscarriaged. But, there is always hope that it may be hiding. So, the good and the bad. This is only natural. If it was not ment to be just remember you still can try again. It was emotional because I wanted it so badly but now I look back and say it was not the right time.

Just see what happens and go from there. God only can give you what you can handle and you are a strong person who will make it through anything. You can get pregant again if there is nothing there. They will go in and do a DNC or you can wait til it abort itself (which I would not recommend).

Good luck and Just remember you can be strong.

J., I do not recall excatly what they were testing for on my first pregnancy (it was over 4 years ago and my son was borm perfectly healthly). I seem to recall that I had low HCG or something like that, that the drs were concerned with. After they discovered that the levels of HCG (whatever it was) were too low my OB/GYN sent me to a fertility specialist (there is another story about how terrible I felt going into an office pregnant, where all the other women are trying so hard to get pregnant . . .). He told me to take one baby aspirin everyday, this went on till the end of my 2nd trimester. In addition my OB/GYN sent me to see a high risk pregnacy doctor. I also think there was a concern with the testosterone levels manybe, but it seemed like if it was a problem they had a way to fix it. I am not telling you this to scare you, as I said everything turned out perfectly normal and if you need the name of a high risk pregnancy doctor let me know because I have one that delivered both our boys and is just wonderful!!
