My 2 1/2 month old just recieved her first set of shots yesterday. She ate normally during the day, slept fine all night & had a dry diaper this morning. Is it normal for them to not urinate in such a log period of time after shots?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Shortly after I recieved & read the advice, she started urinating a lot! I think she just might not have eaten as much as I thought she did. As far as the shots, I spoke in great detail with our pediatrician who assured us that it is media attention that has blown the whole autism link out of proportion & that that theory has actually been disproven. Thank you to the mom's who replied. It is so comforting to know that there are other people I can turn to for advice (especially since I am so unsure about a lot of things!)

Honey not to worry, she's only a baby. You might want to give her water in between feedings 1-2oz. since she is so young. Shots are definately a little pain they tend to change normal behaviors in little ones. Just take it a step at a time and she will be fine.

Dear Bmoreau D:

I've never been an advocate for vaccines especially since I read an article to a wonderful magazine, which I believe is still in business called Mothering Magazine. They don't sell it everywhere but I'm sure you can get it in a fine book store like Barnes&Noble, etc.

I use to be an avid subscriber to their magazines for many years.

Even though you must take into an account that they are her first set of vaccines, I don't believe that you should be so quick to come to that conclusion if it has only been over night that she has not wet a diaper.

If however, she lasts more than 14-15 hours without wetting a diaper, I suggest of course that you bring her into your nearest pediatric emergency --because that is a very clear indication that something is very wrong.

An infant wets about 6-9 diapers a day. Almost always the first 72 hours are crucial and you should check for signs of fever, discomfort, throwing up, irritable, etc as well as that of not urinating as usual. Also, of course you must let your pediatrian know what you observed after the shots were administered.

It is also a wise thing to have your doctor write down the Lot # to the vaccines he has administered to your baby and the date alongside, and that you keep a small diary of notes following your observations for every single time it is time to vaccinate this baby and every baby you have after her as well.

Also I believe that educational information is the greatest tool a person can have. Subscribe to mothering magazines, and check with Amazon.com for alternative books on vaccines.
Only then, you can make wise, conscientious decisions. I am a mother of two now teenagers and a health practitioner.

Keep your baby very hydrated and also massage her tiny body all over with a good almond oil or olive oil ( not baby oil because this is a mineral oil that just clogs the pores ).
The massage will help the lymphatic system discard some waste matter and will be very soothing and relaxing to her tiny body
after those shots, so also helping her to urinate and throw off any toxins.

Please let me know if I was able to be of some assistance.

Good Luck and God Bless.

That never happened to us. My son did everything just fine after his first round of shots. I would call the pediatrician just in case there is something significant about it. It's not uncommon for babies to run a slight fever after shots, which could cause dehydration...which can be serious if unchecked..for that reason alone I would call the doctor.

This does not seem like a typical shot reaction...has she had a wet diaper yet? Shot reactions usually include redness and swelling at the injection site, low grade fever, irratibility, etc. You may want to check in with your pediatrician.
Good Luck

Hi,
Im not sure this is a reaction to the shots...I know my daughter was absolutely miserable after her first set of shots but not urinating wasnt one of her issues....I would defanitely give her pediatrician's office a call....I would think it could be from dehydration but if she ate normal than that cant be the case...Its always best to call when in doubt!!

I think you should call your doctor right away!! That would really wory me because I think shots can cause kidney problems. And if she is ok I would becareful for he next round of shots. Maybe you could spread the shots out.

Please understand that pediatricians have a lot to gain by vaccinating our babies. It is the position of the American Academy of Pediatrics that vaccines don't cause harm. The doctors follow what the AAP and drug makers say.

It seems obvious that if you inject a baby that has not developed an immune system with mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, ether, antifreeze, and live viruses that there will be some adverse effects. Not to mention the monkey and aborted human tissue that is used to make the vaccines in the first place.

Please do no let your pediatrician fool you. Do the research yourself before you follow the guidelines your pediatrician suggests. There are other safer options to getting you kids vaccinated. Spread out the vaccines, use single dose vials of the vaccine and confirm they are thimerasol/mercury free.
