I decided to start my daughter on solids later (6 months) since most of the studies seem to say that's safer. I didn't start with cereal because it wasn't very good for her. I opted to start her on advocado. She still mostly nursed and I would give her some whenever we ate.

Good luck.

Hello J.,
i started my kids both on single grian rice cereal, and they both actually started it at a 7 weeks, i started out with cereal in a bottel, and i actually had gotten cereal bottels, which help your child get the swallowing down because you can make the cereal pretty thick in those bottels, but in a regular bottel you can only put like a tsp in at a time because the nipples get clogged. i had a problem with my daughter on the rice, it made her constipated, and so i switched to barley and that really work for her and then i moved to the oatmeal with her, my son is having no problems on the rice, i'm going to be starting him on the barley this weekend actually, and i'm sure that he will be just fine, but after my daugther got to the point of really swallowing, i starting giving it to her in a bowl, until she got on furit, i only gave it to her twice a day, once in the moring and then right before bed with her night time bottle, but when she got on furit, i would feed her like 4 times a day once in the moring with cereal, in the afternoon with furit and cereal, dinner with furit and cereal and then at bed time with just cereal, it was great, and when my daugther got on cereal she started sleeping 12 hours with no problems, my son sleeps any where from 8 to ten hours at night so i love cereal, i hope that you have just as much luck on the cereal as i did
Good Luck
S.

You need to do what feels right for you. I didn't give my son anything until 6 months as the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests. And then I only gave it to him if he was willing. By that I mean, I waited until he opened his mouth eagerly for food (like a little baby bird). For my son it took 10 months of offering food every once in a while. For a friend, it took until 7 months, and for another her daughter was 4 months. So it depends on the kid. BUT we have all found that our kids are not as picky eaters, will eat veggies and fruit and pretty much anything. If they are not ready, thier mouth will stay shut and they will spit it back out at you. I suggest you know your baby and do what feels right.

For both of my children I started rice cereal at 4 months. I gave them that (I think) twice a day for about a week, this was breakfast and dinner. I didn't give any in a bottle, only a bowl. Then after that week was over, we started bananas, and then every 3 days (to ensure they're not allergic to what you're introducing) we moved onto applesauce. We got thru fruits then started vegetables. I think some doctors won't start baby food until 6 months, which I think is totally fine too, breast milk or formula is really where they're getting their nutrition from until they're onto real food. I think at this point, it's teaching them about eating and using their tongue, etc. I think my pediatrician followed the diet recommended by Gerber, so you can go onto their website and check out their recommendations.

Hi J.,

I started my daughter on the single grain oatmeal cereal first since she had trouble with her bowel movements. I didn't want to risk her getting constipated. I fed her this in a bowl with some formula (or breastmilk) and sometimes mixed with juice. She didn't like it much though and still doesn't (she is 13 months now). I tried feeding her when she was about 5 months but didn't really start eating the food until she was about 7 months. I also started with fruits like applesauce and pears. Simple things to see if she had any allergic reaction. Every 2-3 days I gave her something new and so on. After the fruits were introduced I started giving her vegetables. Unfortunately, she didn't take well to that. But, I sneak them in. Also, finding out that she loves sweet potatos help since she will eat anything with them lol.

I didn't start giving my daughter any cereal in a bottle until she was 5-6 months and I didn't do that for long. I know most mothers swear by it and say that their babies sleep better with it but there was no change in sleep habits with my daughter when I gave her it. Also, her pediatrician at the time was very against it and advised me against it so I didn't do it much. Her Pediatrician told me something like the cereal can get stuck in her lungs or something like that. I don't know how often or the statistics on the chance of that happening. All doctors are different though and you should discuss it with your own. Nothing like that happened to my daughter when I gave her cereal in a bottle but well, like I said, I don't know all the facts about it.

Hope I helped some! You will find out all the tricks to your own baby soon enough!
