First Trip to a Salon - Need Advice!! - Lenox,MA

ok - before you assume I'm a hick - I'm 34 year old young at heart active mama who has a whole lot of style, but hasn't had a haircut in closer to 16 years now! I've had dreads for years that I've been growing out for the past 3 years and finally at the point where I have a lot of straight hair and can get a cut. I am pregnant with #3 and feel pretty nervous, but I think it's time for change.
So, I'm nervous about being able to know what's in my best interest. I'm not a Cosmo girl. I don't know salon "talk" of descriptions for cuts. I don't know what to wear! Should i wear a t-shirt to have head access easy or does it not matter - or might I freeze? Should I bring a shirt to change into at the end, b/c of loose scratchy hairs? Should I do myself up beforehand so that when it's done - I can look inthe mirror and think - looks good? or is that silly when hair is getting washed and stuff?
What's standard tipping practice?
Is this even a good idea? I'm 4 months pregnant and feeling unattractive. Is this ballsy or should I run with it??
Is it ok to get highlighting? (something I've never done, but I think might help)
anything else I should know or words of wisdom?

thank you so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ok - somehow this question posted several times, but I got such wonderful support - I just wanted to thank you all! It ended up being a wonderful experience and all and all - i feel great :)
I did wear make up - haha - and i ended up tipping like 75% because it was a 3 hour cut at their flat (reasonable) fee.
Thank you for the encouragement - I honestly don't know if I could have done it without it!

Hi Magreen,

If it were me, I'd start with something easy to maintain and not too hugely different from what you've got going on now. Maybe a longish bob or blunt cut just at the length of your grown-out hair? This first cut doesn't have to be the be-all/end-all haircut. You might just need some time with it to decide where you want to go with it next, if you know what I mean. I *would* shy away from anything super-dramatic like a cropped or pixie cut, because it will take a while to grow back. With something longer, you've got hair to work with if you decide to go shorter or do something different later on.

Be clear with the haircutter if you want something that is low-maintenence, and be super clear about how much you want to do with your hair in the mornings after you wash it. If you just comb it and blow dry it, don't be afraid to tell them that. The reason is that you might not want it cut into a style you have to work on every morning.

Ask around, too, for a referral. I've discovered that I really like to work with people who A. like cutting hair and B. have been doing it a long time. For myself, I've discovered that more mature stylists tend to listen better and will not give you Joan Jett Choppy Ends when you are 7 months pregnant and just asked to have it "trimmed up". ( my true story...yikes!)

If you see a picture in a magazine of a haircut that you like, bring it in with you. Don't try to describe it too much, pics are better.

Highlighting is fine if you are willing to maintain getting it touched up every 6-8 weeks or so. And do some research on the chemicals, too. You could also ask about getting highlights/color that might wash out over time, so you don't have roots to deal with.

I usually tip my haircutter about 20%. It really depends on the service too. Awful? Don't leave a tip.

As for what to wear: they're going to put the cape on you anyway. I'd suggest something without a high collar, so hair doesn't get stuck in it and make your neck itch.

And yep, go for it! Even if it's a little change, sounds like you are ready for it!

Have fun!
H.

I would definately start with just cutting off what you've grown out. You can always go shorter later. They say that coloring your hair is fine when you're pregnant, but keep in mind that your roots have to be done often. You may want to wait and see if you like the hairdresser/salon first before you make the commitment. As far as tipping, depends on the service. I think most people do 10-20%. Good luck & have fun!

I say go for it. I wouldn't go too short at first unless the stylist really thinks it will look good. I love shock factor for my hair. I tend to let it grow a little longer and then go in for a big change. It's fun. And if you hate it, it will always grow back (and more quickly since you're probably taking prenatal vitamins). Then you'll know what you don't like next time. Definitely do your makeup and wear something that makes you feel cute. I love the feeling after making a change like this and it's much better when your face and clothes make you feel pretty too.
