freak accident everyone is saying oh why let the kids play outside if it flooded. Everytime I was in a flooded area I was out and about playing in it. It was fun. Im just glad he is okay but no need for CPS
There is major flooding in and around Duluth. An 8 year old was out playing with his cousin in the puddles and fell through into the sewer. They found him a mile away alive.

Would you view this as a reason for Child Protective Services to be involved? or is it just a freak accident?
My opinion is that its a freak accident and never would have thought of this as a possibility. Online, the parents were getting blasted so I was just curious as to your thoughts.
Very lucky however!

Freak accident and lucky to be alive I'd say. Wow.
i dont get how it even possible thats its a cps thing. if it was puddles and not 3 feet of water why was it wrong for them to be playing outside?
Those people who are giving the parents grief online are just jerks. I wonder what they would think if people wanted to call CPS on THEM if their child got hurt playing outside. Playing in puddles is not something to call CPS about.
Dawn
From the pictures my Duluth friend posted this morning on Facebook, I'd say freak accident. Nothing about what I'm seeing there looks anything but freakish for the area. I am sure the adults involved had no clue that a manhole cover was open (probably blown off from the pressure of the water).
Looks like the news crews don't have a lot of details on it yet, so how can we really judge?
I don't understand how or why CPS would become involved.
Freak accident. What 8 year old boy wouldn't be outside checking out all that crazy water today?
That said - I'm pretty sure I'd be freaked out about the flooding and dangerous water (it looks insane) and I would have been keeping closer tabs on my 7 year old where he out.
really?...why would anyone think of getting CPS involved?..the kids were out playing-good for them-instead of sitting in front of the tv getting massivly obese..life happens..unreal..sorry but i just dont get why you would even ask that?
In principle I agree with everything people have said. Freak accident, parents terrified and never intended to be neglectful, not an automatic call to CPS. This stuff can happen in the blink of an eye despite the most watchful of parents.
Just to play devil's advocate, say that this 8-year old has been injured several times playing outside when his parents were not around. If someone called CPS and told them about a pattern of the child being undersupervised and being injured as a result, then it might be appropriate for them to look into it.
I didn't read the article - don't feel that I need to.
Accidents are just that - accidents. I don't know why people always feel the need to place blame on someone for an accident.
No, CPS does not need to get involved. Accidents happen; they are not planned for; that's why they're called "accidents."
I see no reason to involve CPS. I don't pay any attention to online comments under news stories. People are morons and will criticize no matter what. The Duluth zoo is under fire as well because 8 of their animals died in the flooding. People can be brutal, but it only shows their ignorance.
can we assume that there is not a foot of standing water in this yard he was playing in? to me, i am imagining, everything cool and wet and rainy, and perfect playing outside weather. maybe i'm stupid. but if there was actual flooding in their yard i'm sure he wouldn't have been outside. you're right, those comments were really hateful. and SO many of them....i can't believe not one person stood up for them. is it like the apocalypse up there or something?
Freak accident. Things are insane up there right now, I've never seen anything like it even when I was experienced major floods in Costa Rica.
