Florida Breastfeeding Laws

Does anyone know what the breastfeeding laws are in Florida? I am almost positive that I am legally allowed to breastfeed in any public or private venue. My real question is am I legally allowed to do so without using a cover? I have a nursing cover and I HATE it. It is sooooo hot for both myself and my baby. She seems to not like and actually has a harder time nursing when I use it. Does anyone know?

Those who feel nursing in public is a disgrace or that showing any part of your breasts in public while feeding a baby is a disgrace need not respond. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all soooo much for the positive and fast feedback. I am very appreciative. I do plan to use a burp cloth or small blanket to latch and unlatch. I also make it a habit of feeding in less crowded spots in a mall or store not so much for others, but to help my daughter concentrate. :) Thank you especially to the lady who posted the link. That was very helpful.

Here you go!
You should be fine.
You might want to print something out to hand to anyone who gets huffy.

When my husband was open carrying a firearm in parks when it was first allowed, he often had to hand out info not only to people but to officers who'd go look it up, tell my husband to have a nice day, and then tell 'concerned' people no laws were being broken.
The looks on some faces were priceless.

"Twenty-eight states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws."
As well they should. I know that anywhere my baby and I were allowed to be legally, we were allowed to breastfeed. Florida is one of those states, too. Nurse on proudly!

I never used a nursing cover. I just used a small cotton receiving blanket, and only long enough to get the boob out and the baby latched on. After that it was easy enough to keep my shirt in a position where I wasn't flashing the world. I also had a few nursing tops which I LOVED. I had no problem nursing in public, but I did value my own personal modesty.

Just be considerate of others; if at a restaurant ask to sit in a corner area, if at a mall go to an area less crowded, etc. Use a receiving blanket to help hide you when pulling out your goodies and putting them away. You will be fine, I never had a problem, I was very discreet and mindful of children & men.

Don't quote me but I am pretty sure breastfeeding rights do not trump indecent exposure laws. In other words if you are basically covered, like a nursing top, you are fine. If you whip off your shirt, whip out your boob, people gasping everywhere there is a good chance someone can call the cops and no one is going to care you were feeding your child.

I never used a cover when I breast fed. I just draped a spit cloth over their head, just to make sure I wasn't making someone uncomfortable, myself included. :)

I don't know about Florida, but the last time I went to my local public library they had the human rights law that covered a mothers right to breastfeed posted on the wall in the children's section. I was pleased to see it posted there, but at the same time I realize it must have been posted in response to complaints against nursing mothers. If someone is offended by the sight of a nursing baby, they just need to look away!

Let me just say that when I see 'Breastfeeding' and 'Laws' in the same sentence it makes me sick! There should be no 'laws' about breastfeeding.

Like Mamazita, I never used a nursing cover. Just a cotton receiving blanket or an unfolded cloth diaper (great for mopping up spittle too). They gave enough coverage and allowed the baby air.

I never used a cover anywhere, but would choose a "quieter" spot, just for my own comfort, not for anyone else's. If men can't peel their eyes away from nursing breasts, that's their (and their wife's) problem, not mine!
I can't stand the thought of someone telling me to be mindful of someone else's comfort with my choice of feeding method, especially when that means that my own comfort, or the comfort of my nursling is compromised. If its hot, no cover, period. If I want to sit by the window in a restaurant, and not be stuck in a corner booth by the kitchen, then we sit by the window. If baby needs to eat, they eat. Funny no one ever wonders about my "comfort level" when I see a mom formula feed.....

I never thought that I would nurse in a public setting let alone nurse any of my children but I have and will continue to do so even in public.I have yet to have anyone comment on what i'm doing negatively.I use a baby receiving blanket I tuck it under my bra strap it is just enough coverage for me to be discreet and not show my boobie and not overly hot for my baby.Nurse on & be proud to do so.

You are allowed to breastfeed in public - private is different and depends upon the venue. That is true for all states...

I breastfed my son for 14 months. At the park, the mall, Target, Little Gym, the pool at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, the beach, St. David's Catholic Church, my older son's preschool, daycare, work, etc. I used a gauze receiving blanket tucked under my bra strap for latch on and off - plus he spit up a lot as a newborn and it was useful to clean us up. As he got older, I covered less and less because he wouldn't tolerate it. However, as he got older, I had to breastfeed away from anything "entertaining" or he would rather watch the entertainment than nurse.

Keep breastfeeding as long as you are both comfortable. If you are in someone's home, consider asking if they can point you to a quiet place to nurse. At my in-laws, I went into the (never used) living room or their home office.

My baby wont stay under a cover either. I just wear 2 tank tops, so I can pull one up and leave one down, I feel less exposed that way. Get onto the facebook site ' Respect the Breast' and ask them, they always know the most up to date laws on breastfeeding in public.

You are "allowed" to breastfeed in public anywhere in the entire U.S.! That being said, about half the states have laws that say it is NOT indecent exposure. But overall there are NO laws that prohibit breastfeeding anywhere in public. The choice of whether or not to use a cover is completely up to you. Someone may say something, but you can just take that as it comes. I have been nursing my youngest for 7 months, and my oldest breastfed for 6 months. I used just a blanket with my first. That got very difficult at around 4 months. With my second I bought an "Udder Cover". But I usually just use it around family now. Or I just throw a light burp rap over her face.

Just be as discreet and modest as you can. I too used a receiving blanket to cover areas when needed when I nursed my oldest. And as Talkstotree said...nurse on!

Im not sure but I understand you 100%! We were at the beach the other day, we just moved from Orlando to Clearwater. My poor girl was soaked in sweat from covering her to nurse. I felt so bad I took her in the bathroom to feed her. Ive heard it both ways. So I'm not sure but let me know if you find out!
