Flying with a "Lap Child"

Hi. We are flying United in May to Costa Rica. My 16 month old is going as a lap child. Does anyone know if he is allowed the same carry on baggage as a regular passenger? I checked their web site and he is permitted a checked bag, but I cannot find any info on carry on baggage.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I guess I'm just going to have to call. I was trying to avoid that as it takes an act of God to actually speak to someone. Ina's response makes me hopeful that I can take a carry on for him. It is an international flight and I did pay a fee even as a lap child. Thanks for all you responses.

It is my understanding that the person who paid for a seat is the person who is entitled a to a carry on. For example, with my paid seat I am allowed 1 personal item and one carry-on. I can't take an extra personal item for my lap child because my lap child does not have his own seat. However, when I paid for my son's seat, we did carry another bag as his personal item which went under the seat in front of him.

According to United's web site (https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/i...:

One of the following infant articles may be carried on board, in addition to the maximum carry-on baggage allowance:

Diaper bag
Small collapsible stroller (space permitting)
Government-approved child seat (infant carrying seat or car seat)

If you don't want to call them, you can try chatting with them over their web site. There is a link on the top right corner of their home page.

Hey there, we're kind of neighbors, so same amount of flight time to Costa Rica. We went there when our daughter was 18 months old ... trust me, purchasing a seat for your toddler will be WELL worth the money spent. I know you didn't ask that, but just wanted to throw that out there. :)

P.S. if you do buy your child a seat, the CARES aviation seatbelt is a godsend!

You need to call and verify first.

If at all possible, everyone would be more comfortable, not to mention safer if your child had his own seat.

Generally, baggage is per seat. So, you would be allowed one carry on + one personal item for each paid seat. Your baby would probably not get a separate allowance, since there wouldn't be anywhere to actually put it on the plane.

Call the airlines. It is probably bags per SEAT because the luggage bins are for the seats. If he doesn't have a seat, technically he doesn't
"count" for carry-on. Find a big bag you can fit your purse and his stuff in.

Lap children are generally NOT allowed carry on baggage, but most airlines will overlook a small backpack on a child. If you show up carrying four bags (two for you and two for him) they'll probably tell you that you have to check some of the bags.

you are allowed one carry on and one personal item per ticketed person.
strollers you can bring and leave at the bottom of the ramp to the plane. Having traveled with lap children, I recommend checking your bag anyhow, its very difficult to manage a carry on bag, diaper bag and baby.

I have flown internationally with DD as a lap child several times. She was always allowed 1 checked bag and a carry on. We always had to pay a minimal fee for her and she had a ticket, just no seat. We often got "bassinet seats" that had more legroom and a bassinet for the baby to lay down in... very nice when you are on a 10+hour flight!
I would call the airline to inquire - they change their baggage policies all the time...

Usually lap children are not allowed a carry on or checked baggage, but you would need to confirm. Both items are for paid seats only usually. There are always exceptions, but my experience has been they are not counted.

No. I believe you are allowed a diaper bag, but not an extra carryon.

Call the airlines and ask. They are the only ones who know their rules for sure.

I have flown with all of my kids at one point or another as 'lap kids'...I always let them have and wear a lil' backpack (and I am talking about the small kid kinds) to have their toys in and no one has ever said anything to me about them.

Depends on the airline. Usair last time I flew was one baby item, ie stoller it car seat and a diaper bag. Sw, 2 baby items plus diaper bag. Call and check with your airline. Also if you don't already know you can take drinks for him. Check qhen you getvthere if there are empty seats so he cab actually have one. I flew with my son twice and he ended up with his own seat each time. SW told me if there were empty seats to juat put him in one and notvsay anything. Have a great trip.

The luggage is per paying customer. You are usually allowed a purse anyway so your diaper bag would fit that bill. Purses are placed at your feet rather than cargo so it's your space to use as you please.

Whenever I fly with my son I always take his diaper bag in addition to my 2 carry ons. No one has ever said anything. They are a little more lenient with the number of bags when it regards a little one. I would not try for 2 carry ons for your child.

When my kids were younger, I always did the lap thing. I would bring my purse and diaper bag, and hubby brought a backpack with all the other stuff. Call the airline if in doubt
