We are flying with our 8 pound chihuahua mix int he cabin. The vet gave me medication that I might be able to use. Have you flown with a dog and did you use medication? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My mom had a small dog that she would travel with from time to time. Use the meds! She always did. It just made her little dog really sleepy. he would just sleep the whole trip. Much less stress on him and then she didn't have to worry about him crying in the crate and bothering other people.

Before my daugther arrived, I used to fly with my dog; she was a champ. I quit doing it when my daughter arrived, but I had cut back on it due to the cost (American charged $100 each way, and you can't self-check with a dog.) I NEVER medicated my dog to fly in-cabin. The vet said to have it with me to give to her if she seemed anxious in the airport and that would allow enough time for it to take effect. The most important thing is that your dog needs to be used to being in the carrier. If it is comfortable being in there, then it will probably be fine. I used to leave the carrier open in the house for a few days before traveling and put treat in it here and there so that she'd walk by and find a treat.

It depends on the dog and how he travels if I would you the medication. We have moved a few times, our dog is fine with travel as ia one of our cats so no meds for them. The other two cats get medicated since one is very nervous and one gets sick in the car.

Test the medication out before you go ifyou think you will need it so you can see how it affects your dog. It took three tries and two meds to find the right one for one of our cats, the other anything works.

Also decide before hand if possible since some meds need to be in their system for thirty minutes to an hour before stress to work the best. You may change your mind and give it when needed too.

Safe travels!

i used to travel with my 15-20 lb dog in the cabin all the time. he LOVED it! i never used meds or even had to bring them with. but he is a pretty calm dog.

tips - i would check in and get my boarding pass and everything and then at the last possible moment go take him outside to go pee and poop if possible. i also let him walk in the airport ....no one seemed to mind....and he loved it too. I would put him in the carrier at the last possible moment - go to my seat toward the boarding line. i would also have something that smelled of home - a little blanket that he could lay on. then i'd bring little pup a roonie and rip them up in little pieces and give them to him as we took off and landed, so he was chewing and his ears wouldn't hurt. i would also give him little sips of water. you can stick your hand in and pet him too. i would even open up the top a little and let him stick his head out sometime if i had the row to myself. he slept most of the time....the sounds and vibrations are comforting i think.

good luck -you should be fine.
