Flying with Tubes in Ears

My husband and I are taking our 5 yr old daughter to Cincinnati Children's Hospital in a couple weeks for health reasons and we are flying. She got tubes in her ears this past December. Does anyone know how flying and the change of pressure will affect her? I've never flown with any of the kids before so I'm not sure what to expect for her. Any suggestions to make it easier or more comfortable for her would be great. Thanks!

What can I do next?

The tubes should actually make it easier for her - no pressure buildup. There should be no special needs. Check with your ENT if you have any concerns though. My son had trouble with pressure in his ears. Flying was horrible... until he got tubes in :) Have a good flight. If your almost 2yo uses a binky/pacifier, that'll help on the flight to release the pressure during the flight.

Hi K.,

My nephew has tubes in his ears and he is a little over a year old and he has flown a few times now. The tubes in the ears make it where the children usually doesn't feel the pressure. Your child should be comfortable and fine. I am sorry that you have to go to chicago childrens and I hope everything will get better. gl M.

My 3 yr old got tubes when she was 1. You don't have to do anything for flying with tubes. The tubes keep everything at the same pressure, she won't have to swallow or drink anything to make her ears pop. She won't even get the popping sensation. It's kind of nice.

You mentioned that you've never flown with any of them before. Make sure the other children pop their ears, especially the 2 yr old. Anything that makes them swallow. Special treats given right as the plane is ready to take off work well, granola bars, chips, cookies, suckers, chocolate milk. Just make sure you wait until the plane is really ready to take off and not just taxing.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Call your ENT. I never heard of it causing any problems. If nothing else it should lessen the pressure, have her chew some gum or suck on a strawed drink while take of and landing is going on.
