Foamy Formula

My daughter is 5 months old now and used to be really fussy and gassy. I was using regular Similac and switched to Similac Sensitive. I did notice that it would bubble a lot. I started making it with warm water and stirring it while the baby bottle is still open. Kinda like swirling it. Do not shake the bottle because it will produce tons of bubbles! The warm water helps a lot, too!

We used the Similac Advance Infant Formula and it tended to get bubbly too. It should not affect what the baby is getting though because most of the bottles now are made to help control to much air when the baby is drinking. Unless your baby starts getting really bad gas I would not worry about it.

Also, you can go to Similac.com and then have a help desk so you can check with them directly.

I ran into that all the time with any of the powdered formulas I used with my first daughter. She had really bad reflux so i had to use the pre-mixed stuff because the bubbles irritated her stomach. In the event that I had to use powdered I would just put a couple drops of the mylocon gas drops and that makes them dissolve.

Hi J.. I don'tknow how you are mixing it, but do not shake it. In fact only shake a bottle if you absolutely have to because it puts extra air into the formula which can give the baby gas. Stir it only. I had 5 kids with reflux and this is one thing the doctor told me early on.

Yes, I use Similac Sensative, and it foams up on me too. I have used it for several months, and every can does it. Hope this puts your mind at ease. Your formula is not expired or bad. :)

I am so excited to help you... My husband found that mixing the formula in a blender made it nice and smooth. what a great dad!!! He would make a pitcher full every night.

I never used Similac, I used enfamil premade formula.I tried the powder but it did seem foamy and I just didnt like the consistancy of the powder.
I think its worth it spend the extra money if you can to get the best type of formula if your child isn't sensitive to different types.
Enfamil was what his Dr gave me too. In the hospital they gave him Similac and he didn't do well with that.

I would at least try the canned formula and see how that works even if you don't want to switch brands..

My formula does the same thing and I buy the Kirkland brand from Costco. It's not harmful so I wouldn't be concerned. You can add the mylicon drops which will eliminate the bubbles and any chance of the bubbles causing gas to the baby.

I experienced foamy formula in the past & I sure didn't want my baby drinking all of those bubbles that would come back to haunt us both. I added a dose of those gas drops for babies & it seemed to pop the bubbles a lot faster. Or try making enough formula for the day & let it sit in the fridge for a while. Good luck!

I don't know if you would be willing to change brands, but I personally like enfamil over smililac. I've used both, enfamil is a finer powder and I've never had a problem with it.

I'm a HUGE fan on Nestle Good Start - no foam and has comfort proteins (whey protein)-- Nutritionist say its the few out there that are the better formual to give. I use the new green label with the natural cultures to boost immune systems and my little girl has steered clear of all flu bugs this winter so far (knock on wood)

We started out using Similac since we had to supplement with formula and had the same trouble. We switched to Good Start Supreme and he did fine with it and NO foam. I have heard that Enfamil foams too. Try Good Start. Its really easy to digest and we never had any problems with it. Good luck!

The costco brand was like that too. It didn't seem to ever bother my son though.It just looked weird for me.I wouldn't worry unless your baby is gassy.

So this is my two cents - have you considered trying one fo the organic formulas? I have never had an issue with Earth's Best doing this sort of thing. And just as a thought try using the glass bottled water not the nursery water that comes in the plastic bottles. You can generally pick the organic forumla up from Babies-r-us, Raley's, Whole Foods and a few others. I have been using Aqua Panna water and you can pick that up from Raley's or Whole Foods.

Are you shaking it to mix it? I use Similac Sensitive and it doesn't do that for me. What I do is put the water in the bottle, warm it up, then put in the powder and stir it. I use the Gerber bottles and while my daughter drinks I gently pull the bottle out of her mouth for a few seconds a couple of times while she drinks it to let the suction go. It bubbles a little bit, but they stay at the bottom and then I don't let her finish the very last bit.

I had the same problem with the Similac. My daughter had stomach issues and we ended up switching to Nestle GoodStart also. However, when we were trying to make Similac work we would guess how many bottles she would use in the day and make them the night before. They can stay in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. I had also read that you could use a pitcher or some other container to mix it in, and then poor it into the bottle as you need them. That should also help with the extra air, if your little one is a spitter.

We stopped using Similac for the same reason. My daughter suffered from a lot of gas too, so it seemed to make it worse. We switched to Nestle Good Start. Wow! What a difference.

I have just started using formula with my son and we ended up using the Similac Sensitive as well. I have been nursing so I thought the foamy bubbles was just what formula does. The amount is almost overwhelming.. If you get helpful information I would love a summary!

I always thought of it kinda like pouring a beer into a glass...too fast-FOAM! A tip I used is to fill the bottle w/ warm water THEN add powder--mix with a butter knife not a spoon-SLOWLY. Do not shake. So liquid first then powder. Good Luck!

I've noticed the same thing using Similac Advance. I've been using it for 3 months and every single can does this same thing.

I also hated Similac and changed to Nestles and it made a huge difference in my baby's happiness.

I agree with Melinda - nothing is better than Nestle Good Start. My son had no issues with it at all and it isn't foamy at all. It's great stuff.

This happened to us and our boys had reflux, too, so we just put some Mylicon in every bottle and they were fine--you can see the bubbles disappear when you use that! And it's less expensive than going to the premixed.

It was doing that when I mixed my formula up twenty-eight years ago . I believe its due to the powder. If you have concerns you can call the formula company. Good luck
