Foley & Sotloff Beheadings, Rice Elevator Video, and the Like

Would you/Have you watched them?

I haven't seen the beheading videos but have seen still shots prior to the murders. I accidentally saw the Rice video and was horrified.

What purpose is it to watch them, other than plain curiosity? Besides ratings, does the media show these disgusting videos thinking we as humans are going to learn something profound by watching them, thus creating a more balanced society?

From a mother's/parent's perspective, can our kids (hopefully not too young!) and our country gain anything by watching them? (I suspect it might boost military recruitment, who knows!)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ya'll are right on about implying the Rice video can be compared to the murders. Yes, I was categorizing the fact that our media shows just about anything these days, that's all. Both are acts of violence but on completely different levels.

Regarding military recruitment, it must be fun for some people to put words together to make it look like they know what they're talking when they actually don't:

"Wheeler likened the recruiting surge immediately after 9/11 to those who flocked to recruiting stations after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

'In this case, it was almost instantaneous,” Wheeler said. “People saw the (9/11) attacks up close and personal, and if they harbored feelings (of joining the military) before then, this pointed them in the right direction.' ”

I did not watch the beheadings and won't. I feel so badly for those families.

As for the Ray Rice hit, I saw that on FB and I was stunned. I think what stuns me more is that now his wife is speaking out that the media ruined their lives. WTH.... If she continues with that attitude... the next time he hits her, it might be fatal. Maybe her tune will change now that he is fired and there will be no $$.

I don't watch these videos. I'm smart enough to read an article and understand what happened, I don't need a violent, awful video to be etched into my mind. Just the idea of watching those videos causes a lump of anxiety in my throat. Knowing people are being hurt and murdered absolutely tears me up.

I miss real news reporting, where reporters would REPORT the news to viewers, "just the facts, ma'am," and allow us to draw our own logical conclusions. Now the media is full of commentators who force opinions upon us. I hate it.

Thank you, Diane B, for your comments. You are SPOT ON. And our president HAS taken less vacation than any president in 30 years, INCLUDING President Bush. I roll my eyes at the idea that a president actually EVER takes real vacation - he is on call at every moment, no matter who it is. People are constantly updating him, on the golf course, at the dinner table, in the middle of the frickin' night... It's only people who think they know everything (and aren't there a lot of them) who pretend that any problem can be solved by not taking vacation...

I really wish that these beheading videos would be taken down. This terrorist groups feeds on all the media coverage they get, and having these on display for people to watch is just playing into their hands. If the news media didn't talk about them, they would lose a lot of steam. The same happened with the North Korean president who was saber rattling, conducting bombing practices, shooting at a South Korean island killing some people. As soon as the media focused its attention on another tragedy (the Boston Marathon bombing), he stopped all that stuff.

These people THRIVE on media coverage.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that people shouldn't be clicking on these links, A.. All they are doing is hardening their hearts to violence, and giving this terrorist group credence...

ETA: I love the liberal mantras...if Bush had been golfing 8 minutes after Foley had been beheaded - the liberals would have been screaming for blood...it was tacky on his part. IF 0bama HAD a strategy - we wouldn't have lost a SECOND American...

even the liberal NY Post states it was WRONG!!
http://nypost.com/2014/08/24/obamas-golf-outing-after-fol...

Ohh look! CNN even says POOR FORM!! And for once - I can agree with 0bama - He even said it was BAD...(oops).
http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/07/politics/obama-golfing-opti...

And these "vacations" - yeah...Bush went to Texas...0bama travels the world with an entourage costing us millions - liberals don't bat an eye...I truly do NOT understand liberal logic...point is? If we had a LEADER instead of an habitual golfer or fund raiser?? We wouldn't be in this situation...what's wackadoodle? people still support 0bama...I don't get it...I shake my head and roll my eyes at the hypocrisy and ignorance...that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!!

Oh yeah - A. - I'm sorry - I forgot to comment about Ray Rice. Yes - I saw that one - not because I looked for it - it was there when I turned on the news the other morning and thought it was part of a movie - nope. Real Life...sad thing? She STILL married him AFTER he decked her. How sad is that? Now she's upset with the coverage and "the man I love is out of a job"...the woman needs help. She is battered and the whole world saw it...yet she STILL married him...

Original:

What's a shame and disgrace is that 0bama has no strategy and was playing golf a record 8 minutes after Foley's beheading. Funny to see Feinstein talking against him...that made me laugh..she's been in office wwwwayyyy to long...just as many others...damn if we don't need to impose term limits (although we already have them - they are called elections) we the people have proven to be too ignorant to handle voting...sorry - I digressed...

No. I haven't watched the beheadings. What would be gained from it? Nothing from my end. My kids have heard about them, to the best of my knowledge, they haven't seen them. I don't know what they see in school during the morning news...what purpose to watch them?? Ratings? Maybe...the amount of violence we see on a daily basis only desensitizes us and makes things "less" therefore - "oh it happened again? okay"

Nothing to gain by watching them. Just to show how low people will go.

Are you old enough to remember any news footage of the Vietnam war?
Pretty brutal stuff.
Remember the child running naked from her burning village while covered in napalm burns?
Ugliness/brutality is always with us - it's a dark side of human nature.
We can turn off the tv and shut it out for awhile but it doesn't take long for the next holocaust to come along - and there's always another one coming along.
We as parents protect our kids best we can but ugly stuff happens to kids around the world all the time.
Besides - by the time kids are old enough to view R rated movies/play Mature rate video games (some parents allow them at 13 and younger) - the violence becomes 'entertainment'.
It sells - people buy it.

No I don't watch any of it.
At the risk of offending the devout, have you ever wondered at the violent image of a realistic crucifix?
HELLO! Bloody tortured dead guy!
(Alright He gets up and walks away later on but the moment of His death is what's on a whole lot of churches/altars).
Now - how much good does THAT image do for the world?

(Please Gals - it's too soon for the election political spats to start up. I WILL NOT have my Sept/Oct ruined with the mud flinging. Just realize all politicians are the same no matter what party and none of them is any better/worse than the next guy. We're officially an oligarchy and we the people don't make any of the important choices.)

I am not sure what is to be gained from watching the videos. However, I have to say that the 'grouping' together the beheading videos WITH the rice video seems to be comparing apples and oranges.

A domestic violence issue, while VERY disturbing, in NO way compares to beheadings by an organization with an agenda that is using the videos to incite terror is in MY opinion FAR more serious.

I will most likely NEVER encounter rice in my life time. The potential for ISIS to impact my life at some point IS a point of concern.

I do not need to see a behaeding to know it takes a very evil person to even consider it, much less follow through and video tape it. As mothers, just taking a second to imagine what their families must feel, makes me weak in the knees.

The rice video, I watched, mainly because I wondered why he had not been fired in the first place and wondered if maybe it was not as bad as reported by the press, but he knocked her out with a punch to her head! She was flat on the floor, no movement! It made me mad that supposedly the NFL team had seen this video and only suspended him for 2 games? It took this video going public to get him fired.

I guess sometimes showing a video us needed to prove how bad an incident is, to get our attention.

Now the deal with the President. Do you all really believe he has no plans? Has not been working with his advisors? We have no idea, nor should anyone, of us know what is planned for ISIS. Our govt, is not going to give hints, they are not going to share, the plans, so that when they do take them out, that group is not going to know what happened.

It is just like hostage negotiations. They are going on at all times to free Americans, but this info is not shared for many reasons. They do not want to cause more kidnappings by giving publicity to these people, and negotiations are very fragile at all times. Let the American press have any idea of what is being done and it can ruin everything.

Keep in mind, it is just like at your work, the owners, board of directors, do not tell the employees everything for good reasons.

You can all assume, but until you have had to make some serious decisions in your own lives, you may not realize, sharing some information can really mess things up.

No kids don't need to watch the beheadings. Nor should anyone. We would be catering to our baser instincts (usually morbid curiosity - there really is no other reason to watch them) to see such things.

The internet has a really ugly, dark side to it, that mirrors the ugly dark side of human nature. Humans need to attempt as much as possible to be their higher selves.

i don't know who rice is or what he/she did. i also seem to not have an interest to look for that news.
the media didn't show the beheadings. those were posted anonymously, and twitter, youtube etc acted as fast as they could. they were quicker with sotloff's video as they were prepared better. foley video came out of nowhere.
i don't have much comment about obama except this:
he should have sent someone from his staff to foley's memorial. it was disrespectful not to do so.
golfing minutes after the speech didn't go well. and it shouldn't have gone well. after that news, americans were waiting for something. we got nothing.

Is this a political question?
Or a domestic violence question
Or a media censorship question?
Or a question about our choices about our own exposure to violence?
Or a question about presidential vacation days?
Or a question about truth?
Or all of the above?

Anyhoo--did not seek out or watch the beheading vids.
But the Ray Rice video made me nauseous.
Hmmmm... I guess the Ray Rice video is an example of the 'media' shedding light on a previously whitewashed version of the truth, right?
