Are any of you teachers or know where I can find some sort of state standards on how much homework is typically given at 5th grade?

Also, someone else told me to ask if the teacher was certified? Does this mean that not all teachers are "certified"

Thanks for the clarification.. we have had awesome teachers up until this point and have no idea where to start..

What can I do next?

Hi L.
The State of Arizona requires all Public School Teachers to be certified by the State of Arizona.

The transformation from 4th grade to 5th grade is one of preperation for the 6th grade and if you have a teacher
that sends home a lot of home work you can ask the teacher
why and since it sounds like you have done this.
Can you share what the teacher has shared with you?

I am sure you have and continue to have an awesome teacher.
I am curious, your son is 12 and of course the twins are not in the 5th grade. Are you petitioning this for another friend or relative?

I am not a school teacher. I however was a certified State Advocate in AZ for 10 years for children with special needs.

Warm wishes
C.

hi L.,
I am a certified teacher (now a stay at home mom). For each grade level a child should be recieving up to 10 min. of homework four nights a week. So a 5th grader should be getting up to 50 min. per night! You can go to www.ade.gov (arizona's state education website) for more information, and they have the state standards for every grade level on there too. Some teachers are "emergency certified" which means they don't have their teaching degree yet, and are either working on it still or just starting it. I would recommend having another conference with the teacher as soon as possible, and if that doesn't go well talk with the principal.
good luck!
J.

I have taught 2nd-4th grades and ALWAYS gave homework Mon-Thurs and Fri was just making sure parents signed a weekly behavior note to return on Mon. Here is what a typical night's homework looked like in my class (2nd, 3rd, or 4th)

--some sort of paper/pencil review activity of a concept we'd learned in class recently or that week (only 1 paper, usually 2 sided)
--Practice their math facts either with flash cards or doing timed tests at home (pretty much whatever worked for them)
--Studying spelling words
--Read for 15 minutes/20 min in 4th grade

It might seem like a lot, but it was always about a half hour to forty-five minutes worth. I think it is very strange for a 5th grader not to have homework, even if it's not "typical" homework like I considered mine to be. He should be doing projects and reports and all sorts of things like that...at least in class if none of it goes home.

I would meet with the principal like you are doing and voice your concerns. Ask about the other 5th grade teachers teaching styles and homework routines, BEFORE you just say "I want to change teachers." Tell them WHY you want a classroom that has a more strict policy--your son needs the structure to complete tasks because he won't on his own, etc. It will look better if you do that and then bring up changing teachers later in the conversation.

Teachers in public schools are to be certified if they are teaching. In some cases, maybe they were an emergency hire but they still need to get their certificate within a certain amount of time. Charter/private schools don't always have the same type of rules. Is it just her first year? I KNOW how hard that can be, but you still have a right to find out what is going on. If it's a school wide thing, ask why.

Sorry if that seems jumbled, just trying to help! It's nice to see parents who are concerned and check up on their kids at home about school work. I worked in a school where that didn't happen much, yet my kids still got homework no matter what. All kids need practice!

A good rule of thumb is ten minutes per grade level, so about 50-60 minutes for a 5th grader. Sometimes reading is seperate time.

As far as certification, I know there is different classes of certification but I'm not sure how it all works. I'm a speech therapist in the schools and I must be certified.

Hi, i also have a 5th grader and this year has been better than the past years. Yes, they still get alot of hw. Just something that is a staple. The teacher said that the students get time in class to complete the work and if they don't then it goes home. Good luck.
Ps: On average my son has about an hour, sometimes 1 and 1/2 if he did a lot of talking that day, and then he still had to read for 30min. So it could be up to 2hrs. hope this helps
