Any suggestions out there for food for a 1 year old who is sick of baby food. He eats maybe a few spoonfuls and then refuses it. He definitely wants to feed himself and has been living off of cheerios, kix and puffs. I am having a hard time figuring out what else to give him since he only has 3 teeth.

What can I do next?

I was nervous about the self-feeding stage but my 9 month old is so thrilled to be eating banana bread, plain pancakes (I make whole wheat), banana, avocado, sweet or plain potato, french toast (just yolks), grated soft apples (McIntosh), pasta & grated cheese...I am constantly surprised what he can handle- even cottage cheese! Now that he's 1 you could scramble whole eggs. I buy peeled butternut sqush and chop it, put in a baking dish & cover it with peeled chopped apples, dot with a little butter, a little brown sugar & cinnamon, cover & bake - we all eat it. Hope this helps some!

Hi Julie -

I am in the same boat with my 14 mo old daughter - she only has two teeth. What I give her is organic deli meat like turkey and chicken slices (cut up). I will also heat up blueberry and oat kashi waffles in the microwave. I also have tried a variety of fruits and veggies cut up into small pieces (bananas, oranges, apples, avocado). A good thing to buy is Del Monte sliced up fruit in the jars - they have pears, oranges, grapefruit etc. It is pre-sliced and I just shake off any excess juice before I give it to my daughter. Don't be too concerned about the fact that your son only has three teeth. Your child can eat by using his gums to chew food up. My daughter can eat a whole piece of crust from a piece of pizza with no problem.

Hello,
He can eat any vegetables that are overcooked such as brocoli, cauliflower, carrots... he will chew with his gums and you will be surprised what he can do. Lentils, beans, hummus... he needs food that will give him protein and vitamins. Puffs don't give him the nutrient he needs. Talk to your pediatrician, search on line for food to make yourself. Make soup with all kinds of veggies, blend it and let him feed himself. He will make a mess but how will he learn if he doesn't try, then it gets better and better as he learns the spoon feeding. he can also feed himself with his fingers. Give him a chance.

I agree. Give him what you are eating but cut up really small.

maybe it is time to stop give him baby food, do you mean from jar or?

just give him the foods what ya guys eat for breakie, lunch adn dinner... as long cut it in small pieces, make sure the veggie is soft enough for him to chew... if he can chew the hard stuff then great. I rarely feed my baby foods. i always homemade foods for my son since almost 6 mos old.

it s alright to have few teeth and still can eat lot varies of foods :o) your son can also eat cheese too.
my son didnt have teeth in back and only 4 in front and he eats meat, lot of veggie n fruits at 1 yr old. just leave few pieces of food on his table at time.

My almost-three year old had a lot more teeth than my 10 month old does right now when she was the baby's age, so I hesitated to give my youngest people food too, until just recently. I was finding that the baby was always hungry, so rather than waiting for the teeth, I am trying a bunch of different table foods. She is loving them! Staples I lived on with my oldest that I'm also giving my youngest are: mac and cheese (the elbow macaroni works well), Perdue chicken nuggets (not frozen), boiled carrots and green beans, peas (mashed), yogurt, cheese, soft bread torn into pieces, saltine crackers, strawberries. You can tear chicken into little pieces, as well as hamburger and turkey. Check the baby food aisle as well - Gerber makes toddler foods that are helpful and good on the run. I love the "Pasta Pick-Ups", which are like baby raviolis. They also have cookies, meat sticks, and crackers. The rule is that one year olds can eat what you eat, except for nuts and fish, as long as you cut everything into little pieces they can pick up. It can be so overwhelming - I am at it for the second time too and I feel like it's all new again! Good luck!
