Hi! My son is 2 years and 5 months old. He has food allergies to milk(dairy), eggs, nuts, and fish. He weighs 24lbs. I have been searching for a protein drink or something that he can consume that has a lot of healthy calories to help him gain weight. Food allergies are so hard!!! My husband and i took him off of soy milk because we found out that it has estrogen in it. Does anyone know of a fruit based drink similar to pediasure that I can give him? He takes calsionate for a calcium supplement, drink fortified orange juice, and takes poly-vi-sol for a multivitamin. I just want him to start gaining weight and to eat better, he can be so picky but I don't blame him because of his food allergies. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the answers, some were very helpful! :0) I just came across another great source for those with allergies... Neocate, it works just like pediasure but it's a powder. They have a tropical flavor drink and a non-flavor powder. It can be used with babies, toddlers and those to 10 years old. I'm going to start with this and take some of the advice given here. Again thanks and God Bless! :)

I don't really have much experience with food allergies, but my husband can't easily digest cow's milk so I buy him goat's milk. It's much more easily digestible (closest to mother's milk you can get) and you absorb much more of the calcium. I give it to our daughters for this reason. Most grocery stores carry it (Ingles) but Whole foods or something similar will definitly have it. Good luck!

I know that there is a formula out there that is Pea based. Also protein drinks for grown people. I got both products through a Naturopath.

You might want to google Naturopathic Doctors in your area & consult, an ND would be a good resource for your son in any case.

Good Luck!

I totally hear ya on the allergy thing! It runs in my family pretty bad. My daughter cannot eat anything that is not 100% natural and it can be a challenge!
Considering your son's allergies and the need to gain weight, I would recommend Biquick heartsmart pancakes with natural or organic maple syrup. Pancakes are very high in calories! A nice non-dairy drink is rice milk. We drink a lot of it in our house. There is also a nice variety of non-dairy icecream out there too.
For protein I would recommend hummus. I make mine in a food processor. I have 3 very tasty , easy recipes for them so if you're interested let me know and I can send them to you! :)
Other than that I would definatley recommend that he start drinking 100% pure pomegranate juice (POM is a good brand)--about 2oz a day--- on a regular basis. I have noticed a very signifigant improvement in mine and my children's immune systems and that our symptoms from reactive foods are lessoned by about 50 to 80%. We make smoothies every morning which we really enjoy (pomegrante juice, banana, various frozen fruits and rice milk)
Good luck! :)

E.,
My son has food allergies too. I think the picky nature comes from that because my son is so very particular about what he will eat. It is just one of those things that you will struggle with until he outgrows some of the allergies. One of the things you can try to gain more weight is a lot of whole or white wheat bread. Bread in general puts meat on the bones and the white wheat variety has a lot of calcium. I was always a very scrawny kid, and to put weight on, my mom would give me jelly toast every morning or bread with apple butter. I hope this helps!

If you are within a couple hours of Harrisburg NC (near Concord) I would suggest you call Dr. Andrea Dobrich and tell her about what is going on with your son. She works miracles for kids with allergies. ###-###-####, she has been helping my family for years.

Good luck, J.

You son doesnt seem to small to me. I dont know how tall he is but my daughter is 4 and a half and is 28lbs at 37 inches tall. My son is 19lbs and 31 inches tall. Is his milk allergy to cows milk only or has it been confirmed to human milk and goats milk too? Have you tried goats milk? Goats milk is very different from cows milk and is very close to human milk as far as ease of digestion goes. A lot of kids who are allergic to cows milk are not allergic to goats milk. Rice milk is also very good? If you really want to put weight on him you can try avacados if he wont eat them plain make guacamole dip and give him some chips to eat with it. Also is he allergic to seeds as well? I know you said he was allergic to nuts. Sunflower seeds are a great sorce of nutrients and fat.

You failed to give your son's height. My son is 3ft 2 years and 8 months and only 24.6 lbs. His doctor has confirmed he is proportionate to himself. He is completely healthy and sometimes I feel America is to hyped up over the weight. We are trying to constantly feed and fatten up our children, but can't seem to understand why at 9 they weigh the same as healthy 7th and eighth graders.

My son isn't so much the picky type, but I always joke he is a rabbit or squirrel because he will live off of fruits veggies and yogurt. If you feel he needs a better variety, I would look into some health food stores because they do carry a large assortment of food for people with food allergies. It is pretty common anymore so I would try there first.
