Food Allergy? - Madison,WI

Hello my son is two years old and has recently started to eat salad dressing. He really likes ranch but I had to stop giving it to him because he would develop a rash all over his face everytime he ate it. It seemed to leave a rash wherever it touch his skin. It also seems like maybe it bothers is tongue or something. So I tried a different kind of dressing and now it is doing the same thing. I don't really know anyting about food allergies or intolerances since I don't have any and by husband doesn't. They both have soybean oil, xanthum gum and polysorbate 60. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows anything about it. I am worried that he has been having reactions to other foods and I just have not noticed it because maybe it was in a solid form and didn't get all over his face and leave a rash. And now I just feel paranoid because I feel I am noticing all these other things that could possibly be symptoms or they could just be nothing, like irritability, not feeling well, seems like his tongue bothers him, or he is just playing with it, doesn't gain weight well, but he has always been small, and has not always been the best eater, but I know toddlers can just get that way. So if you have any advice or suggestions, please help! Thank you!

The same thing happens to my son with things like spagetti sauce and believe it or not eggs....but it goes away when he's done eating and cleaned up, so we never worry about it. It may not be so much an alergy but just sensitive skin to what's in the product. You could probably bring it up to a pediatrician, but in our case, as long as it doens't seem to be affecting him in any way but irritation on the sking (it doesn't bother him)we are just letting it be.

I would say that your son has a sensitivity to Monosodium Glutamate. Actually everyone should avoid it like the plague but it's in almost ALL premade foods even though it's not listed as MSG on the label. I have a list of the alternate names for MSG if you are interested.
My mom makes her own Ranch dressing and it is soooo yummy! There are many foods out there that are MSG free, you just have to read labels diligently. It's really easy to avoid MSG once you get the hang of it.
I know several people who have skin reactions to MSG and all it's forms. Your situation sounds amazingly similar.

This is pretty common, especially amoung kids your ds' age. I asked our ped about it, when it happened to my girls. He said not to worry about it and go ahead and keep letting them eat those foods. It quit happening after awhile.

Hi S.,

I can surely understand your frustration.

Please do yourself a favor. Get the book: "The Safe Shopper's Bible" It is A Consumer's Guide to NonToxic Household Products, Cosmetics, and Food, by David Steinman & Samuel S. Epstein, MD.

It has a lot of information on the products in our markets.

Good luck,

Hi S.,

I wouldn't be quite so concerned, but you mentioned that it seemed to be bothering his tongue. If it is bothering his tongue then at some point it could start bothering his throat, and that is definitely a big concern. If I were you I would talk to his pediatrician about this and possibly have some allergy tests run. There's no sense in taking chances with the ones we love most.

I have a child who has severe food allergies. So if I were you, since it involves the tongue, I WOULD take it more serious. When a child is actually allergic to a food, every exsposure makes it worst when not being treated. I would stop giving it to him and go and get allergy test done. At his age they can do a serum test not the skin one and therefore only one poke. I would NOT keep giving it and hope he outgrows it.... Trust me, the worst thing to walk in on is a blue kid in the middle of an allergic reaction.....
