Try making a few different finger sandwiches. For my son's second birthday party we made cheese, pb&j, BLT, roast beef, and open-faced cucumber finger sandwiches. I also made a big fruit salad and had fresh vegetables with dip. A simple cake, juice boxes, waters, and sodas and the day was perfect. If you want some recipes or planning tips, just send me a private note.

Have fun.

We did an outdoor party at the park at 2:30 pm for 80 and did mini-appetizers (tacos, flautas, chimis), guacamole, chips and salsa. The mini-appetizers were great for the parents to snag on the run and good for the kids and babies because they were fist-sized and easy to tear apart. De pending on the time of your party, you might not have to do a full lunch/dinner. If you do want to serve a meal still without too much chaos and work for you, especially trying to transport, keep hot/cold, pizza is always a great option. Everyone loves it, it's minimal work, can be room temperature for a long time and can even be delivered straight to the party location. Good luck and congratulations on hiting the big 0-1!

I would also check out healthier cake recipes online for your baby (www.wholesomebabyfood.com is a good place to start)...I'm also planning my son's first birthday party and I found lots of good baby cake recipes that have much less sugar, fat, etc. I plan on making him his own cake and letting him have at it, but I'll also have a regular (better tasting!) cake for everyone else.

For both of my kids' 1st birthdays we grilled. I don't know if that's an option for you, but it worked great for us. We had mostly adult family with some cousins varying in age from around 4 to 14. You can grill hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, etc. Also, you can make a lot of sides the day before and marinate meat, giving you less to do on party day.

Happy party planning!

For the past 2 years we have done pizza for my kids parties. We order 8-10 pizzas from Pizza Hut and I also buy some chips and make a salad. It is so easy, takes the stress out of worrying about the food and we can enjoy the party more. I am not sure if people are getting tired of having pizza's everytime they come to one of our parties, but it is easy for me!

We just had a party for my 3 year old son, and served the following:
-cut fruit (for 1 year old, maybe bananas, soft peaches or pears,)
-popcorn (not for the 1 year old, but man, the older kids and adults loved it!)
-yogurt with toppings on side (sprinkles, granola, dried fruit, cereal)
-flour tortillas cut out with cookie cutters and made into peanut butter sandwiches (a hit!)
-muffins, mini bagels with spreads
-Chex Mix
-juice boxes & bottled water
-cupcakes for the kids instead of cake, which was much easier and faster to hand out!

Have fun and good luck! :)
