Food Intolerance

I have a 6 month old, who when you feed her food, of any kind, shows all of the signs of intolerance. The 2 times I have tried feeding her food she ends up with a cold and an ear infection. Does any body have any ideas on what could be causes this. I think for some reason she is just not ready for food, but the pediatrician thinks the colds are not related to the food. He says I should keep feeding her. I am just really unsure what to do. If she gets one more ear infection then we sart talking about tubes and I really do not want that so any help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for their responses. Luckily, she out grew it and is doing well. In fact she won't let anyone feed her but her. Thanks again!!

They could be related or they could not, it would be hard to tell, and with her being so young her introduction to food has just started. She could have allergies, I know we tried applesauce with ours and she had cold symtoms for a couple days, and the my mom told me I had been sensitive to apples when I was that age too, and she was fine once we stopped feeding her apples. It could just be that. I would also either make your own baby food with no preservatives or try a health food store that you can buy food with no preservatives you little one my be allergic to processed food. I hope this helps.

I'm no pediatrician, but I agree with yours. Colds and infections come from viruses, not foods. And baby foods are sterilized and purified beyond belief, and packaged in sealed, air-tight containers. I, too, really believe it is pure coincidence that the colds and ear infections came around the same time that you tried feeding your baby, and I think you should try again. Babies do get colds now and then, and I know it can be scary, but I really don't think they are related to the food.

We didn't start feeding my (now 10 month old) baby solid foods until she was 6 months, and she would throw up every time we fed her. The doctor said to put the food away and try again in a month. She did fine at 7 months. As you said, maybe she's just not ready.

Hi R.,
I agree with the pediatrician. Foods and colds or ear infections are not usually linked. If it were the flu like diarrhea or vomitting then it would probably be from the food or intolerance. Maybe it was just a coincidence that the 2 happened at the same time. I think that you should definately keep trying. I started both of my kids on food when they were 2 months. I think it just depends on what you are comfortable with. I hope all the responses help you and give you some good advice.

Remember that at around 6 months, the immunity from you starts to wear off for the baby. Her immune system is starting to develop, and she is more susceptible to germs than before. My daughter seemed to go from one cold to another between about 6 months and 1 year.

Good luck with everything.

6 months is when we started too, and our ped. suggested trying only 1 food at a time, and once tried, using that one food for 1 week minimum before introducing another 'flavor'. He also suggested we start with rice cereal mixed w/ a fruit - we started with this but our baby hated it. We kept putting cereal in his bottles instead, 2 x's a day, and introduced yellow veggies first (squash - no gas, sweet potatoes, carrots) then introduced fruits (pears, applesauce, bananas = gas, plums) then introduced green veggies (he LOVED g/beans, peas) and lastly meats w/ veggies. He's 8 months old now, and has just now tried pretty much all variations. We also decided at first to stick with one brand, so either Gerber or Beech-nut. Good luck. If baby doesn't seem interested, or does the force-thrust motion w/ the tongue, wait a week and try again! We gave our baby boy a spoon to play with and put in his mouth to get used to the feel of it... He has a spoon to hold while we feed him now! Sometimes he actually gets it in his mouth right!!! You may find that with limiting your new foods introduced to 1 per week, that you find the one causing the food allergy if that's the case :)
