Food on Dfw-hawaii Flight (American)?

My kids and I are traveling to Honolulu on American. I flew much more back in the days of free hot meals & snacks. What can I expect? I see from the aa.com site that there will be a meal for purchase. Is it always just a cold sandwich these days? Will a flight that long have times that they also come thru w/ snacks for purchase? Any suggestions on what to take? I have 3 kids ages 11-14 and one is a very, very picky eater; it's hard to even think what I'd take for him. Anyone know if the meal will be about halfway through the 8 hr flight? It leaves around 11am. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I just came back from Vegas a few weeks ago on American. They had snacks for purchase but it was like $3.00 for a package of crackers. Everything is done with a credit card now. Even the movie head phones. Most planes are set up now that if you have your own head phone you can plug them in. As far as snacks, they still let you bring snacks on the plane just not liquid. I do remember coming back from Honolulu 8 yrs ago and they gave us a meal--I don't think we had to pay for it because at the time I think it came with your ticket purchase. you have to eat. That is a long flight. You are alowed one carry on and a purse so pack it with some goodies or you own sandwhiches.

On my flight we could purchase a sandwich or other snacks. I would suggest that you get something at DFW and carry on especially for your picky eater. They do offer beverages throughout and if you needed anything at a different time you could always request it from the attendant. Take your comfortable ear phones so you can listen to the movies...the airlines that you buy for a dollar hurt my ears. Good luck and have a fun trip!!

Hi M.,

I haven't flown direct to Hawaii from DFW, but stopped in LA so our flight was 5 hours. A sandwich pack with a piece of fruit and crackers were offered for sale. They only accept credit cards that can be scanned. no cash. We picked up chili's to go at the airport and carried that on board and ate it early into the flight. I brought snacks for my family in a carry on bag and we had those later on in the day. They did supply cold drinks, water, coffee and ice at least twice (on the 5 hour flight). Have a great time!

My husband and I made this flight from DFW to Honolulu last April and by the time they reached our aisle they had run out of all food for purchase - there were not even chips we could buy. The flight attendants said that this happens on all the flights to Hawaii since they started cutting back on items - their suggestion was to go to aa.com and file a complaint - we did but I am not sure if it has gotten better or not. Luckily, I had packed a few snacks but we were starving by the time we landed after just munching on goldfish and some other small snacks. My suggestion is to bring snacks and buy meals to bring on from the terminal...better to safe than sorry, especially with kiddos!

We fly a lot and on American primarily. We've been on a couple non-stops to Hawaii (Maui).

One thing we do, especially for a long trip is save our points and upgrade to first class. There is hot food and constant service there.

I've not flown otherwise to Hawaii. If I were to do so, I would have my food packed in my carry on bags just to be sure I had something I wanted to eat. I think you get all the drinks you want, it is just the food issue.

As for medications as listed on the previous post, the flight attendants are always helpful and would most likely keep it for you if you need to. Just mention it to AA before you get there with the meds and see the policy. I am sure you'll be fine with that part.

Have a great trip!!

Hello M.,

Once you go through security, buy what you can... and you can also bring favorite snacks from home. either eat a good meal just before you get in the plane or buy a good lunch and take it with you in the plane. HAVE FUN! ~C.~
