I used to sell Tupperware, and have a lot of it, but its mostly the bigger containers. For individual servings of leftovers, I've been using the plastic ones you can get at the grocery store, like Rubbermaid brand. They are the perfect size. However, I HATE that they flip over in the dishwasher! Gross! And I HATE to handwash dishes.
I guess I *could* just put the leftovers in the bigger Tupperware containers and scoop out as needed. But I like to just use the little individual serving-size ones.
So is there a more sturdier container that will hold up in the dishwasher that is individual serving-sized that doesn't cost a fortune? What do you use for leftovers?
lol Jo! That's the problem, I have been loading them on the top rack, sort of sideways, but they always end up filled up with yucky water! So I know I can buy more Tupperware brand, but they are a fortune. So I'm wondering what other options I have.
There are glass containers now with plastic tops. I wash the tops by hand and put the glass in the dishwasher (any rack). Plastic can leach into food and food doesn't discolor glass. It's a win win.
Target, Marshalls, container store all carry these.
I use glass - corning ware and pyrex. Some come with plastic lids and glass lids. They are mostly several servings sized. For snack containers, I use rubbermaid lunch kit size, and try to put them where the glassware sits so they don't twist and fill with water. I also have bought plastic and glass mason jars recently and really like those for smaller servings.
Well I don't have a dishwaher right now, so can't relate to that. But I despise microwaving plastic, so we use Pyrex containers. They're glass with a rubbery plastic lid. They're great b/c you can also put them in the oven to reheat dishes/meals - in your toaster oven too! Corningware is good too, but I switched to Pyrex b/c they're clear and you can see what's inside!
Never complain about having to wash dishes --- If you have dishes to wash you have food to eat.
I hit on IKEA, the ones with the green lid. They are many sizes, some I put in DD's lunch, some I use for leftovers, some DH takes to work.
I always put my smaller storage containers in the top rack, where they can't flip over. Or, if it's full of cups, I wash them by hand. I do a lot of hand-washing anyway, because I hate the dishwasher for some reason.
Get a cheap, rectangular-shaped collander and put it OVER the tupperware in the dishwasher, so they can't flip over.
Or for the really small ones, check out the dishwasher baskets in the the baby section - the little lid flips open, and you can nestle those little tiny containers inside, plus the compartment at the top will hold the lids.
I've never had my Rubbermaid flip over in the dishwasher. I am slowly switching to the glass containers. They are better for reheating, don't discolour, don't get that funny smell and they last much longer. I'll still use the plastic for the kids lunches though.
I have some snaplocks that by luck fit in the one rack in my dishwasher so they don't flip since they are already on their side. My husband uses a lot of individual containers and come to think of it, if they are placed on their side they don't flip either.
You know this is going to cause me to experiment when I load the dishwasher tonight, right?
Well these are snaplocks from Costco so I have around a billion of them for 19.95. :p
