You are doing a great job. Formula and milk is great. If he is not haveing any problems, keep it up.

Have you asked your Ped. about this? I know that they usually have you start mixing when baby is around 11m, so this may not be an issue, but they should be the one you're working and checking with.

The biggest concern is that babies before 12 months do not have the ability to digest cow milk proteins; it has too much sodium, potassium, and chloride which strains the kidneys; and in large amounts can lead to internal bleeding in the stomach.

Yes its too early, and its actually dangerous. Wait until he is 12 months. Try some different formulas, it seems like its a taste issue, and see what he might like the best.

In my opinion, you should wait until 12 months, especially if he was only formula fed. However, I also believe that it's better to have the whole milk than nothing. I would also recommend adding Enfamil Poly-vi-sol with iron to his milk. My daughter is 18 months, drinks milk but I still add the vitamin. You may want to check with your ped because I'm not sure if you have to be a certain age for the Poly-vi-sol.

Okay, so lots of people have said to wait but nobody has said WHY. The main reason for concern starting milk early is the amount of vitamins - specifically iron and a few others. A second concern would be the potential for allergy and need for additional protein. I would suggest reading this: http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/milkforbaby.htm

(That site is an excellent source for baby food questions and recipes too.)

I would think that you will need to still give some sort of formula and/or vitamin drops to keep the iron levels up. Talk to your pediatrician about what they suggest as far as vitamins. They can get pretty expensive so see what options are out there. You might be able to get a prescription for some and have your insurance cover some of it. Good luck!

He is too young in my opinion but if the pediatrician says okay then start transitioning him.

Start with mixing 2 oz. of milk in the bottle with 6 oz. of formula. Then after several days of this, a minimum of 3, then switch to half and half. This way his tummy and insides has a chance to figure out what is going on and you can see if the milk is going to work. Then after a few more days, at least 3-4 days of the half milk and half formula then go 2 oz. formula and 6 oz. milk.

Eventually go to full whole vitamin D milk, do not do low fat, fat free, skim or anything else with a child under 2 years old, they need the milk fat for development.
