Hello mamas. I have recently weaned my son. I now feel a lump on my breast. I am pretty sure that it is a clogged milk duct. I have had several before. Normally I was able to get rid of it with a heating pad and nursing my son. How do I get rid of a clogged duct without nursing him? The heating pad doesn't seem to be working. At what point should I be concerned that its more than a clogged duct? This may be a silly question, but what kind of doctor to I go to to have it checked out? Obgyn? Family practioner? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the help and concern. I have a doctors appt on Monday with my ob/gyn. With a history of breast cancer in my family, I know the importance of getting it checked out. Thanks again for all the help, mamas!

Have you tried hand-expressing or using a pump? That might or might not work, but it certainly is worth a shot.

I'm so sorry to hear about your family history of cancer. In this case, you may wish to schedule an appointment with either your ob-gyn or your primary doctor. Either one can do an exam and, if necessary, send you to a specialist.

It's awesome that you are well-aware of your 'breast health' and are able to give attention to this issue immediately. While this may not be a cancerous lump, it's worth getting checked out. Good for you for being so proactive with this - it can make a world of difference if there is a problem.

Go to your ob/gyne, It may be a clogged duct, or it could be something more. I don't mean to scare you, but you never know. I found a lump when I was just 25, turned out to be a cystic mass, but you just never know.

If you cannot express the milk by pumping and see if the lump goes away in a day or so, I would definitely see a doctor. Start with your family or gyne. A former neighbor's sil stopped nursing and freaked when she found 2 lumps. They turned out ot be calcium deposits. They were removed with lasers. Good luck.

Hi Sara,
I am sorry about all you have gone through. Since cancer does run in your family, I would have it checked out ASAP. If the Dr. does blow it off as a clogged milk duct, see a different Doc. Atleast, it will give you peace of mind, when you get a definate answer. Your family needs you, why put something like that off, and just assume. I pray everything is okay.
