Does anyone know if this is legit? I was on a site that says you can apply for free grant money to help pay off debt and get the check from the government quickly. Seems a little too easy for me, but would be awesome if it were true.
Does it sound to good to be true? the old adage is , if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
Most likely a huge percentage of the grant has been set aside to give to minorites. If you are not a minority, you probably wont get it.

Summary: There is no free money.
Grants are generally available only "to help you go to school or money to help you start a business if you’re a woman or a minority. I’ve also seen some that give you money to help with teaching literacy to people. – The free money the government gives away is designed for you to use it to help other people, not just yourself. Free money and federal assistance to help yourself is called welfare. These programs are not just handouts. You have to do something with the money other than just pay your bills and credit card debt."
If debt is a problem, avoid those online links that charge you for their services – they will only add to your debt while "reorganizing" it. Go instead for free CREDIT COUNSELING. That is legitimate. And FREE.
Total scam, they have you spend like 3.00 on software they mail you and you get a free trial for like 2 weeks to use the database of available grants. They then use the card you used to pay the shipping to charge 65.00 dollars a month for continued use of the database. You can cancel it but it is really difficult to do, I got the run around and it took probably a dozen phone calls and a call to my bank to get the recurring charges to stop. All of the grant programs on their list are available online for free, but it is not easy and it takes a lot of work and pencil pushing and research :). If it sounds to good to be true it generally is. Don't get discouraged though it's just going to take hard work and persevernce on your part. If you have to pay money to get it started it's a scam. Money doesn't grow on trees...and these scams are no exceptions. Avoid them.
If a thing seems too good to be true, most likely it IS too good to be true. Their use of the words "free" and "grant" may be quite different than what the words usually mean. If you check it out, do it very carefully, read the fine print, talk to wise friends and family members, and don't sign your name (even electronically) to anything, even if you have pressure put on you to do so! (Don't even let them have your e-mail address.)
I've never checked out those sites; what I'm writing you are just common-sense principles for approaching any "too good to be true" offer. Nobody is going to offer you a great deal without somehow benefiting from it more than you do.
If you're trying to get out of debt, I can recommend a great company that worked with our cc, etc. We were completely out of debt in less than 5 years, and saved a lot on interest rates. They were completely on the up and up. We found them through the debt counselors at one of our credit cards. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. However, that also doesn't mean that there isn't help or hope out there.
Scam! Also avoid debt consolidation programs.
I received a phone call selling a way to receive free grant money. I allowed myself to be talked into trying it. They were to send me something in the mail and I wouldn't be charged unless I then told them I wanted to use their system. I never received anything and forgot about it. I think that "they" are charging me a small amount (around $20) each month on my VISA.
Around the same time I ordered something advertised on TV and on the Internet (a Snuggy? type blanket) I did receive the blanket but I think I'm also being charged a small amount (around $20) every month as a result of that order. When I made the call they, in a recording, asked me if I wanted to try various things.
I've not taken the time to truly figure it out. I froze the account but the bank reopened it and I'm getting charges on it again. Whew! I've decided to never order on line or by phone from any company I'm not already acquainted with. These charges have created quite a hassle for me.
I know that there are some legit programs but more scams than not. I would proceed with caution, there are grants available but they are very difficult to get and take much more work than you are led to believe.
Grant money is truly 'FREE', but ONLY from legit places like colleges or sba (small business admin)......you will get the correct forms etc then you will be told how much you can qualify for......there is NO fee for applying or receiving grant money, please beware.
My dad actually got a phone call about getting "free" grant money to start up a business from some guy. So he started the process. THEN the guy wanted a couple thousand dollars! I called the local police department and talked to them. They said:
~If they are ever asking YOU for money at any time during the process, it's a SCAM
~If they are trying to get PERSONAL info (bank info, ss#, etc.), it's a SCAM! If you give them ANY way to charge you (credit info, bank info, etc.) THEY WILL!!!!
~Grant money is FREE! If you have to do anything that makes you question, it's a SCAM!
~The government DOES have SOME legit programs but MOST that you see are a SCAM!
~IF it seems too good to be true, it's a SCAM!
So my dad passed and the guy kept called him for a couple WEEKS! Kept saying that he was going to give my dads "money" to someone else if he didn't hurry up and get him the check to secure his "grant".
