Freezer Eating and Moving?

Hubby and I have decided that we are going to try to move in the Spring. I freezer cook and stockpile. Do I continue to do so, or do I try to empty my pantry and freezer?

I hate the thought of not stockpiling. I also hate the thought of not doing freezer cooking. I love the ease of having food in the freezer, especially with a baby in the house!

But i can just hear hubby now:" how the hell are we going to move all this damn food!"

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We most likely will be staying in the same area, and yes, my freezer is coming with me!

It depends on where you're moving. Across town, you're probably fine to continue. Across the country? I wouldn't want to haul all the food. :)

But, we don't like stockpiling food either, really. We have some things here and there, but we don't have too much in the freezer..just a well stocked spice rack and pantry, and we can whip up a lot. We like to cook too, though, and spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Before we go on vacations or trips, we clean out the fridge, freezer, and pantry, eating in and using up the things we have. Then we replenish when we get home. That's the route I'd go, I believe. :) There's grocery stores everywhere.

If you're moving, aren't you going to need to be spending LOTS of time packing? I would think a better use of your time would be to stop cooking, eat what you already have and start packing.

Packing is just so time consuming, so that's what I'd be focusing on.

How far are you moving?

I had the power go out a few years ago, and we moved my freezer to my MILs so I would not lose the food. We just left it in the chest freezer and moved the whole thing.

If that is an option.. keep doing what you are doing. I am sure the freezer can be moved and I am assuming you are taking it with you.

I would use it up and empty the freezer.

Pantry stuff can be moved. It is just shelf stuff. Not needing refrigeration etc.

Since you freeze/cook/stockpile and seem well adept at it and already spend time doing that, then don't worry about not having a stockpile in your freezer. Because, you will and can, stockpile again. For your freezer.

And, if you use up the food you have stockpiled now, then it won't be wasted.

Me, I am the opposite. I do not like to stockpile my freezer with freezer cooking. Even when my kids were babies. And when/if things did accumulate in the freezer, I would just use it up, so food did not go to waste or get lost in the freezer black-hole.

Eat it and go. There will probably be plenty of times that you'll have to quickly eat and get out of the house for a short-noticed showing, or you'll have to scurry around cleaning up and won't have time to cook dinner.

Good luck with your sale and move! We're listing in the spring too and I'm so nervous about getting prepped for it.

If you have an idea of when you will be moving, you can fix meals up to a certain time and then stop and eat up what you have in the freezer. That way if there is anything left over it will not be that much and the weight of the freezer will be less.

Food in freezers (chest type) stay for several days before it begins to thaw inside. I once had my power plug tripped by lightening and discovered it about four days later and all was well with the food inside.

Once you get settled into your new home you can gear up to make more food. Being a retired military wife you learn a lot of ways to cook, freeze, store and give away when it is time to move.

My thought would be; Maybe my house will sell quickly if I have a lot of extra stuff to move....so cook away :)

Couldn't you unplug the freezer fully loaded, load it into the moving van, get it across town and plug it back in before you run the risk of it going bad??

Just make sure you have an industrial strength dolly.

I moved from Texas to California with a full freezer. I had it plugged in until the movers put the full freezer in the back of my truck. When we stopped at a motel (I asked for a "down and out".) I had a 12 gage drop cord and simply plugged it into the freezer from our room.

I made it all the way to California and the food in the freezer remained frozen solid.

Good luck to you and yours.

Eat it up so you don't have to move it then after you get unpacked and settled it's time to stock back up. There are some things you can buy in bulk at Emergency Essentials, we get a lot of our staples there in 25lb bags or in #10 cans. We love having food storage. I don't have a deep freeze so I can't cook like you do.

We moved across the country. We ate everything I had stored in the freezer. I didn't have to cook for about 2 months and had to buy very little at the store each week.
